Sapper's were used by the Viet Cong during the war.....they would breach the wire....and use a satchel of explosives to blow up a commmand post or something...
BTW.....CNN is reporting someone at the White House is down playing the incident...
Nothing here folks time to move along.

Nope. A sniper is a soldier equipped with a very accurate rifle (usually with a telescopic sight), and who has extensive training in marksmanship, fieldcraft, and intelligence gathering (the USMC term is "Scout-Sniper"), the last because he is frequently has superior situational awareness. Snipers don't go inside secure perimeters; they camp outside them and wait for a shot at a high-value target (usually senior officers).
A sapper is someone infiltrating with a large explosive charge.

There has been NO intrusion of the chemical storage area. The person went thru the outer perimeter, however.
Still at large.

Actually I do know how the guard detail works there. It is nothing like the airport security mess we've got in place. It is not perfect at depot, but it is pretty good.So I am also informed, by a nephew who has been a member of the guard team there for 12-or so years. Last time I saw him several years back, he seemed pretty sure the security could handle any threat.
FYI, my younger brother lives in Tooele, although he is presently in Chile. Anyhoo, when he first moved there, we were looking south from his house and seeing all the dirt-covered igloos, and he asked innocently, "Gee, wonder what they keep in all those spud cellers?".

Thank you very much Poohbah :) I appreciate it!

has the intruder surrounded. Whew... assuming this was the only intruder...

KSL radio (Salt Lake City) is reporting as I listen now that the intruder has not been caught yet. They have bloodhounds on his trail, and he is dressed in all black. There has not been any damage to the depot found so far.

what would happen to the chemical weapons if the intruder planted a bomb and it went offIt depends. Worst case, if their containment is cracked and they were stored under pressure, is a plume of material squirting into the low atmosphere, somewhat like a West Virginia chemical plant accident.
Fortunately, this is out in Utah where there are very few civilians around to get caught in the plume.
Best case, the materials burn themselves up into oxides of carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur...

Those igloos are in the North storage and contain standard (conventional) ammo, NOT the chemical stuff.
They start about 5 miles south of my house and go for miles.

A sapper is someone who sneaks behind, or under, enemy lines with a satchel full of explosives. They differ from suicide bombers in that they want to remain alive.
The were originally called into play during sieges to dig under walls of castles.
