My vote here, as well.

There will be (as has already been) plenty of sugar and even anti-American messaging in whatever medium is perused regarding the cowardly attack on America by a particular religion from a particular nation.

The Islamic Saudi's were at the forefront, and present day politics are being formulated because of this.

No matter the age, just as we taught our children phonics from the very beginning, and their ability to communicate so proficiently is due, in part, to that early teaching ... we attempt to teach truth so that a proper perspective of the world (world view) will shape their politics, their social consciousness and their ability to be(come) productive (yea, and even provocative) members of a society that, without truth, will die and no longer be free and American.

God bless the hand-holders of the young.

Not to cause any problems, but did you ever say this about Mama Clinton?

But of course.

Curious as to why Barabara is singing Hillary's song?

Sheez. I was considering a cable hook up for just this day. There were so many things I was unable to see when this happened a year ago. I happen to enjoy unedited history.

But then, by this time, the shows will probably be far from "unedited."

Cindy, since you are on FreeRepublic, you are already well informed enough to discuss this with your children. However, there are hundreds of thousands of people out there who are not.

Those are the people she is speaking to. If you have to look to someone else to figure out what to say to your children, then face it those kids WOULD be better off if their parents just turned off the set.

Facts are a wonderful thing, once people know them, for those who will NEVER know them Mrs. Bush's advice is best.

Phonics is fine, but it helps to have something valid to say!

Hold those hands...and don't spare the Truth. They can take, and even need more than most adults can possibly remember themselves needing, using, and being grateful for.

They'll stumble into bad trouble without this ugly inventory...as a warning. They can take it, and truly need it. Don't withhold it from them. You will not spare them, but allow them to be lured into suffering the real error themselves...one way or another.

Outstanding. I never believed in shielding the truth. It is best left to the parent. Something this country sorely needs, is parents explaining events, and teaching their own how to watch/read, news/reports, in a discerning manner.

The first lady, speaking in English,

Whats up with that?

This should explain it

``Don't let your children see the images, especially on Sept. 11, when you know it'll probably be on television again and again -- the plane hitting the building or the buildings falling,'' Mrs. Bush said in an interview Friday with Univision, a Spanish-language TV network.

Hold those hands...and don't spare the Truth.

Young adults need to always learn the truth. That is how they learn, even if life is not always fun and games as they expected.

Love it or not, there actually is a real world out there!

No need for a private message. My thought is that this type of thing is not not the proper role of the federal government.

I just think that Laura Bush could find better things to do with her time.

Who is she talking to anyhow? Most kids are raised by television anyhow. Does anyone think that their parents are going to cut off the plug in drug?

Certainly not in all public schools......but then there is California!! My elementary school in Pinellas County,FL will be discussing character traits during our "American Character Week" (9/9-9/13). On 9/11 we will be wearing red, white and blue, and will also having a moment of silence at 8:45AM in honor of those who died on 9/11/01. We begin every school day with a patriotic song (new one each month) and pledge which is done school wide. On 9/17, Constitution Day, we are wearing red, white and blue, and also joining in on the "Pledge Across America" at 2:00PM. The children will be learning about our Constitution and what it means to live in a free country. The week of 9/23-9/27 is our "Celebrate Freedom Week", and the children will be learning about the Declaration of Independence during this week (at all grade levels K-5), and the first section of the Declaration will be recited over our "morning news" prior to our daily patriotic song and pledge. Visit your local schools and see what they have planned for "Liberty Month - Sept.2002"!

Yes, and keep your kids out of public schools where they'll be told that the attacks were OUR fault!

My daughter is in third grade and attends a public school.

Since kindergarten I have been very pleased with this particular school. They say the Pledge of Allegiance every day, with every word included. Last year they were great in the aftermath of 9/11.

My favorite was the special assembly for Veteran's Day where the Girl Scouts presented the Colors and the teachers who were veterans spoke. Throughout the program was patriotic music with different grades leading the singing.

This year I have been informed that a moment of silence will be observed. My daughter told me that they will be writing why they are proud to be an American.

I just think that Laura Bush could find better things to do with her time.

Huh?

Where you just born yesterday have no historical knowledge of the role of a First Lady?

Yikes, even if you do not agree with her statement, you should at least understand basic American History.

I want to add, that you are correct in your concern about many of our public schools.

I read with dismay the "suggestions" by the NEA and their blame America rhetoric.

My previous post was just to say that some public schools get it right.

Giggle, the role of the First Lady is to be sweet and say dumb things that makes no difference.

She is the wife of the President, and her job is to support him. She may talk about things that will not alter the President's policy, but will support him as a man, and demonstrate her love for him.

That is the role of a First Lady!

Maybe you should understand that responsible parents, who hang out here, do not need Washington, DC to even think that they have jack to contribute to the raising of our children. They just need to fulfill their duty of providing security from foreign invasion and domestic unrest. Otherwise, leave us the hell alone.

I showed them the film of the military personnel fleeing the Pentagon in an almost moblike way, as they leave the fenced in area someone shouts or bullhorns that people are trapped and that volunteers are needed immediately.....that crowd of military personnel TO A MAN (and plenty of women) ALL take one glance back at the Pentagon and then ALL turn back and start RUNNING back to the fire. God that makes me proud and I'm proud for my kids to see it.

REALLY? That's the first I heard of it, believe it or not. Truly awesome, thank you for enlightening me! Brought a big lingering smile to my face. Wait...yep, it's still there. :)
