I make no representations as to how well the author did his research, nor do I intend to defend his thesis. What I do question is that there seems to be many people who are of the opinion that the role/status of women in what are currently Islamic countries is similar to what they were before Islam came to them, and the words of the Qu'ran have simply been creatively interpreted (much as the words of the Bible often are) to match up or even intensify the previous customs. How true that opinion is I cannot say personally.

In any event, Islam certainly does not seem to have helped the status or lot of women any.

On the other hand, if there were no clear differences here, then you would expect Israeli women under Judaism (as well as all areas of Christian influence) to be treated just the same as women worldwide under Islam -- which, if you've read all the posts in this thread, clearly they are not.

I assumed you knew better and you were being PC or something, trying to morally equate Christianity and Islam.

I am a Christian. I know something about Christianity. I am not a Moslem, have not studied it, and thus I will not offer an opinion about the morality of Islam. I can certainly offer an opinion about the way that it seems to be implemented in almost every country where Shar'ia is used as the legal system, though. It stinks, and thank God it can't happen in America as long as we have Constitutional government.

...thanks for the kind words, but don't worry about me; I'm finding that my right shoulder is as flameproof as my left.

Good!

I didn't agree that the Boy Scouts should be required to accept any gay who wished to join any Troop they wanted to.

Of course not. Freedom of association. We might as well force gays clubs to admit heterosexuals, or the NAACP to admit David Duke.

One immediate difference: Christianity teaches that all liars have their place in the lake of fire. Islam teaches it's perfectly fine -- even a moral duty -- to lie to a kafir. Especially if it advances Islam.

You will find some people here rather sensitive to "disruptors," because there's a past history of some who have come here antagonistically, just to make trouble, not to engage in honest discussion of the issues.

Yeah, I picked up on that right away. When I first started posting here, people would make an issue of my registration date, without explanation. I found out what that was all about when I asked why such a point was made.

I think you may also find, as I did, that the more time you spend here, the less time you'll spend arguing!

Well, one thing you learn here, or anywhere else you'll post, is de gustibus non disputandum. You can't debate tastes, or opinions that are openly based on feelings, either. Too many people try to do so, and it takes them a while to learn that you can't. Or they never learn, and people get bored arguing with them.

I do tend to jump in when I see what I consider egregious examples of sloppy thinking, or ignorance of easily checkable facts. Like asking how come NOW isn't saying anything about "honor" killings, without taking 2 minutes to search their website to see if they actually have.

Shucks dude, hang around. I can take losing a position and it looks like I am outnumbered here.

Part of my posts were designed to flush you out if you were a disrupter (which we have had way too many of here lately) but you seem sincere and a decent person.

I take back my earlier posts and welcome. Anyone else jump on you let me know. I'll tell'em you're OK.

Years ago, I was watching 60 Minutes, back when the Soviets had invaded Afghanistan, and someone was interviewing a muhjadeen fighter. They were asking him why he was fighting. This was my first exposure to the concept of "jihad". He told them that if he died fighting the Soviets, he'd go directly to paradise. They asked him what paradise would be like. He said that all that is forbidden on Earth is allowed in paradise; that you could have sex with young boys there.

I knew right then that there was something wrong with the whole concept. Too bad more people weren't paying attention then.
