So what do you say to the gal who knows all this and still converts to islam? The last one I saw do that said that "islam was the only 'logical' religion."
Hey! Her vote counts as much as anybody else's!

Islam is peace.......

Isn't diversity great! In DC, we have people that kill chickens and smear their blood over everything.
What other wonders will turn up?

If you read the link in post #6, you'll see that it's a local custom that predates Islam by a couple of thousand years. The forensic physician quoted in there said that it's as likely to be done in a Christian family as in an Islamic one. And Christianity is supposed to be a religion of peace, too.

I'm sure it happens in some other cultures as well, but
something is obviously culturally wrong here.Or would you consider it normal, on a single given day in the United States, that 20 fathers and brothers would throttle, blow away, and hack to death their own daughters and sisters -- for no reason more profound than that said fathers and brothersthought the victims might have had sex with somebody -- in many cases, the person they had already married some time ago?

Last spring here at a local school, an innocent photo of a young Muslim lady enjoying the company of an infidel boy made its way into the yearbook. When the yearbook came out and the lady's family saw the photo, they demanded that the school recall the yearbooks and excise the offending photo. I believe that the school caved because they worried that the girl might be harmed by family in some honor punishment.

In another incident yesterday, a 28-year-old woman was stabbed to death with a hatchet and a knife in her Amman home by her older brother, who complained he could not tolerate rumours spread by friends and neighbours about his sister's sexual relations. The difference between them and us is incredible. Our brothers would take out the guys spreading the rumors. I suspect that gossip is a means of revenge toward any girl or woman who has the affrontery to just say no. The average 3rd world man appears to be stuck in a strange savage/wussy mode--their sense of honor and manhood is so fragile that they'd rather kill their wives or siblings than be labeled a cuckold but they seem to lack the guts to stand up to the guys challenging their manhood. Weird.

If you really believe the assertion (presented with absolutely zero evidence to back it up) in this article that it's "just as likely" to be done in a Christian family as in a Muslim family, well, I have this real-estate deal that you're going to just love.
By the way, while the article mentions that such crimes occur all over the world, did you catch the list of countries where they are a big enough problem to quote actual figures?
Honour crimes also occur in Europe, South Asia, Latin America and Africa; the figures, while limited, reveal where the problem lies.
A quarter of all homicides in Jordan are crimes of honour. In Pakistan last year, 1,000 women were killed; in Yemen in 1997 [a tiny country!], 400 women were murdered; in Egypt, the number was reported as 52 in 1997.
In Lebanon there were, officially, 36 murders between 1996 and 1998. In 1999, on the West Bank and in Gaza, more than two-thirds of all homicides were believed to be honour crimes.
Notice anything slightly in common between these countries? Naaaah... local custom... must just be my imagination. Never mind.

Incidentally, I wonder what the figures were from Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Libya and Sudan? Oh, never mind... they don't report them...

I guess all the areas that eventually became Muslim were all in the same tribe? Or did they all happen to just come up w/ the same idea?
To: RonF
You seem awfully eager to promote NOW. Are you a liberal troublemaker here????
To: bluester
The two latest cases raise to three the number of woman slain over the past week in the spate of so-called "honour crimes"In a non-Muslim family they wouldn't be called "honor crimes", that's the difference. Just like suicide bombers are considered heroes to that religion so are these murderers.

Oh please, as though it couldn't have happened in some non-Muslim family, for whatever reasons.... This sort of thing happens all the time in Islamic countries. I challenge you to provide a link to one story where a similiar "honor killing" happened in an American family. Just one.

Of course, my challenge doesn't apply to Muslim American families.

Bluster is definitely wallowing in that "fetid swamp of equivalence."

Arabs prize virginity, for they dread comparison, and with good reason.

Fair's fair, that's all. Promulgating incorrect information serves no cause well, and causes people to doubt everything one says.
