>hysterical in the classic medical meaning of the word

It comes from a very common group-think behavior, particularly when it comes to reactionary defense of the government.

I've seen it before in much more heinous situations. I went to a Fourth of July party in 1988, a little behind on the news. When I arrived the other guests were talking about how the U.S. had just shot down an Iranian commercial airliner. I was stunned and sickened, particularly since we had previously made so much hay on the "Good vs. Evil" score regarding the Soviets and KAL 007. Now we had done the same? What the f---?????!!!!!!

But the reactions among the guests were bizarre. It was all OK. It was justified. In the face of violent death hundreds of innocent people, they were actually wearing nervous, "what, me worry," shit-eating grins, saying things like "the plane was diving like it was a warplane." This was a lie, put out by the U.S. military, and lapped up eagerly.

The military ALWAYS lies early and often about their screw-ups. But I just couldn't fathom how these people could INSTANTLY write off such a travesty. Despite being July 4th, it wasn't a very good day for liberty and justice, or for faith in one's fellow American, naturalized or otherwise.

You can't be detained in the U.S. for talking??

Where did you come up with that? You can not only be detained, you can be arrested and convicted for "talking" if the talking amounted to, say, orders to commit a crime, or planning concerning a crime (conspiracy), among other possibilities. If you couldn't even be detained or searched based on what you say, why would wire-taps ever be used?

That said, these 3 men will not be convicted of anything for the same reason the Georgia woman won't: because in a "She said, they said" situation nothing can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

regarding hysterical people like some here on FR
...saying things like
"the plane was diving like it was a warplane." This was a lie, put out by the U.S. military, and lapped up eagerly.

You know... I sometimes feel like you did in '88. I have just arrived at a Conservative party (FR) and the most vocal posters are saying things like, Nuke Mecca... send'em back where they came from... throw'em in jail and keep it a secret.

They say those same things on the Israel First Threads, which represent more of a religious war, but now some of the posters are saying the same things outside of the Israel Threads... and that concerns me.

What was the crime planning she heard? A joke about 9/11; nothing more. Tasteless? Sure. A crime? No. I know a lot about 9/11; I work in NY, and lost friends in the Towers. But there was no crime here, and certainly no probable cause. Finding nada, the cops made up a story that the dogs "hit on" the car. Who could be so simple-minded to believe that? A maroon

We still don't know what was said. The trio denied saying anything of the sort and called her a liar. Alternately we've heard that they were joking about "taking it down" and some comments that "if 9/11 was bad, wait until 9/13".

I've heard a top of the hour newsbrief on ABC radio where one of the men now (Sunday/Monday) claims that the "taking it down" was about bringing a car down to Florida.

Maybe if we could ever hear one consistent story.

Yes, you can and always have been detained for "talking" in the U.S. Making a death threat is a good example of this. Believe it or not, we don't actually have to wait for someone to commit a crime.

Who was threatened? Some lady overhears a conversation and you go to jail? Come on, man. From another table, they could have said "Morning on Sept 13" and she could've heard "Mourning on Sept 13", no? You wanna get arrested because of something like that?

From another table? She was sitting around a foot away from them. She was in the booth next to them. She was only separated from their table by lattice.

Did you actually hear what she said on Fox News on the day this all happened? I did. She was on the phone for well over a half hour. She was VERY specific about what they said. I might ad that she was very credible in my opinion and had little motive to turn in these "innocent" men. This wasn't a case where she heard one word and then turned them in.

Well, the story is crashing. The Sheriff says that the tapes show that they did pay the tolls. The dogs hit on ammonia in their black bags. She heard "mourning on Sep 13"; who knows if they didn't say "morning on Sep 13". She was hysterical and made us look like fools.

She wasn't hysterical when I heard her on tv. Maybe she heard them wrong. Maybe they really did say what she says they said. I tend to believe her.

They just showed the CCTV tapes from the toll both on our local news. It shows the detainees clearly paying the toll, and not blowing through the toll both in any manner.

Not sure what to make of it.

You're such an upstanding citizen. However, weren't you the one who objected to the police search under conditions of potential terrorism? Perhaps if the enemy lands on your doorstep you'll be less prone to support liberal practices that overall have lead to our country's vulnerability. I don't think I want you in my fox hole.

By the way, I didn't mean to seclude my comments under a private reply status, as my list of fears is very short, and you wouldn't make the list.

Have a good day.

I guess your reply is better late than never.

While I'm not sure I support the type of police search you support, I'm pretty sure you have me confused with another poster.

The enemy landed on my doorstep last year. My in-laws live in NYC and my father was less than a half mile away from the Towers when they collapsed. I live in a NYC suburb and like everyone else around here I knew several people who died that day. So many people died that it is still common to see someone you haven't seen in awhile and then find out that one of their family members died.

None of that pain makes me want to live in a society where civil liberties mean nothing. I don't want a Republican King any more than I want a Clinton or Gore dictatorship.

Regardless, nothing is more ridiculous than you sending me a private message where you do nothing more than childish name-calling. You have still failed to comment on any facts of this case and have chosen to focus on a poster instead of the post.

Maybe you would like to enlighten us on how you feel about these guys now that their license plates are legitimate and they paid the toll? Or since they are still Muslim then nothing else matters?

My position all along has been that the press was acting irresponsible by putting the whole nation on edge over a minor tip.

Of course...

My bet is that you'll wait another couple of weeks and then throw around some more personal comments.

Eunice Stone's story rings more "true," now that we know the story about the bombers in London and Glasgow in 2007.

In 2002 young male Muslims, who were citizens, were allegedly overheard plotting to bomb Miami. Bomb sniffing dogs "alerted" around their cars. Their explanation was that they were discussing "bringing down" a car... which is ironic since the car happened to be the weapon of choice for the London/Glasgow doctor bombers.

The medical students are probably doctors by now. I wonder where they are practicing.
