Dems Fume as Al Qaeda Cell Political Ties Revealed
Newsmax.com ^ | 9/16/02 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 09/16/2002 6:10:57 AM PDT by truthandlife

Democratic Party insiders are said to be furious over published reports identifying the five al Qaeda cell members arrested over the weekend in Lackawanna, New York as registered Democrats.

Sunday's Buffalo News initially revealed the inconvenient detail, noting first that "members of Lackawanna's Yemeni community describe the five arrested men as 'all-American.'"

"They include a telemarketer, a used car salesman and a former high school soccer star who was named friendliest in his class. Four are married, and three have children. All are registered voters — Democrats," announced USA Today on Monday, picking up the News report.

News of the al Qaeda cell's political affiliation can only exacerbate the party's already growing image as being soft on terrorism. Monday morning, for instance, noting that the Lackawanna five will be unable to go to the polls in the future, WABC Radio's Curtis Sliwa joked, "There's five less votes for Hillary Clinton."

Some Republicans see the "Al Qaeda were Democrats" reports as poetic justice.

Over the years, Democratic Party spinmeisters and their liberal media friends have repeatedly attempted to make hay over the political ties of domestic terrorists like Timothy McVeigh, whom President Clinton once tried to tie to conservative radio talker Rush Limbaugh.

Since democrats are able to weasle their way out of just about anything while justifying even more in their own minds, this should be worth just a little satisfaction in the minds of those who think dems are only slightly worse than the other major party. Now if we could only get parties out of politics altogether or ethics and morality into parties their might just be improvement in our situation.

Remember the pardoning of Puerto Rican terrorists that the following story covers? I believe it was somewhat before the lady with the short memory was elected senator from New York. Thus the relationship between the DemocRats and terrorism is no surprise.

Clinton's decision to invoke executive privilege stirs controversy

By Jonathan Karl/CNN

September 17, 1999
Web posted at: 3:27 p.m. EDT (1927 GMT)

WASHINGTON -- By claiming executive privilege Thursday, President Bill Clinton asserted Congress has no business investigating his decision to grant clemency to 16 convicted Puerto Rican nationalists.

"Pursuant to the Constitution and separation of powers doctrine," Deputy White House Counsel Cheryl Mills wrote, "the president's authority to grant clemency is not subject to legislative oversight."

The letter came in response to a subpoena from Rep. Dan Burton (R-Indiana) for information and testimony on the president's clemency offer. Congressional investigators want to show that the president's own top law enforcement officials opposed clemency. Undaunted, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Orrin Hatch, says he will issue his own subpoenas.

"If they say no," said Hatch, "we'll have to go to court. The court may very well hold that it's a political question. If that's so, then it's going to have to become a political event. And we're going to just have to show that these people don't shoot straight, they're not honest, they're not decent and they shouldn't be in the White House."

Even some Senate Democrats question the president's right to assert executive privilege in this case.

"The people of the country are entitled to know why this decision was reached and its ramifications," said Democratic Sen. Robert Torricelli of New Jersey, a member of the Judiciary Committee.

But in making the case for executive privilege, the White House quoted no less a legal scholar than Chief Justice William Rehnquist. In 1971, while in President Richard Nixon's Justice Department, Rehnquist wrote: "The president and his immediate advisers should be deemed absolutely immune from testimonial compulsion by a congressional committee."

"All presidents," said legal scholar Jim Hamilton, "from (Dwight) Eisenhower to (Harry) Truman on up the line, have taken steps to protect the sanctity of the deliberative process, because otherwise, they're not going to get frank advice from their aides."

But Republicans point to the case of President Gerald Ford. Faced with congressional outrage over his decision to pardon Nixon, Ford waived executive privilege and came before Congress to answer questions himself. At the time, Ford's Press Secretary Ron Nessen explained: "The best approach is the direct approach, because as president, the power of pardon is solely his."

Privately, congressional Republicans concede they will likely lose the legal battle over executive privilege, but they say the president will lose the political battle because it looks like he has something to hide.

heres something for all to consider: this is a huge tactical advantage for the RNC. an entity can be identified by its behavior, not its appearance. let the behavior of the RNC denote its identity in this situation.

would anyone care to bet the "leaders" of the rnc will try to use this to their advantage?

this will tell you whether they are serious about winning, and whether many have been deceived by their true intentions.

stupidity is not that consistent. every once in a while, if they were that stupid, they would make a mistake in our favor

and a former high school soccer star who was named friendliest in his class.

soccer - remember all those threads on the World cup games?

Four are married, and three have children.

OBL is married (multiple wives) and has many children. This is supposed to make me feel like these guys are "fine, upstanding Americans"?

As if this isn't done all the time if it's a Republican connection...

FROM CNN'S PROFILE OF TIM MCVEIGH:

... After renting a Ryder truck that has been linked to the Oklahoma City bombing, McVeigh telephoned a religious community that preaches white supremacy, but no one there can remember knowing him or talking to him. His only known affiliations are as a registered Republican in his New York days, and as a member of the National Rifle Association while he was in the Army....

Of course, one also notes that Timmy grew up in Buffalo area...hmmmmm?

Heh heh heh!

Bush ordered arrests of suspects

President George W. Bush ordered the weekend arrests of five alleged members of a Lackawanna "sleeper cell" who are suspected of having ties to the al-Qaida terrorist network, sources familiar with the investigation said Sunday.

The president, after briefings from the FBI and Justice Department, told agents to move ahead with the arrests because of fears that the five Lackawanna men - or others associated with them - might soon be called to action by al-Qaida network, the sources said. [snip]

Click link for the rest of the story.

Now if I were the FBI I'd be checkin' those Florida Dem voter registrations VERY carefully!

Well, yeah, but I'm going to say that's basically a coincidence. Pendleton, NY, where McVeigh's family is from, and Lackawanna may both be near Buffalo, but they're about a million light-years away from each other in terms of culture ;)

Surprising! The reports are increasing instead of diminishing.

I heard it first on Fox News yesterday, then they stopped mentioning it in the report. When looking for print verification, it was found in The Buffalo News.....and now USA Today!

Would be a good idea for FReepers to post sources reporting this information so we can keep track.

This is a serious issue for the DNC. Im sure abortion clinic bombing were done by registered republicans (unfortunately, of course we distance ourselves from such action) but the timing of this is what makes it so damaging to the DNC.

In a war with terrorism and America HATING people like Johnny Bin Walker, a terrorist cell of democrats was busted up. OUCHIES! If Bush is in it for oil (of course he aint), I would rather him be in it for oil than in it for terrorists. Spead the word fellow conservatives! Terrorists are democrats!
