CARY, N.C. -- Erskine Bowles pledged to fight privatizing Social Security, saying Monday that his Republican opponent for the U.S. Senate is treading dangerous ground by supporting partial privatization.
Bowles used a black marker to sign a pledge that he will oppose partial or total privatization of Social Security.

Fine. Then give me the "choice" to "opt out" of Social Security altogether and give me back what I put in--with interest--now!
Anyone know if there's any truth to this?
Call me naive, but I don't see it that way. You take the younger tax payers money and invest it. This is money they're already paying in. How could it possibly cost 1 trillion dollars to invest incoming tax money? Sounds like fuzzy math to me. Anyone?
Why not just apologize now (for running, that is), and go home?
...They're the individuals that will vote for Bowles...
"Foreskin Blowes has claimed that giving our citizens the right to put aside their own money will require an extra cost of $1 Trillion. I don't really know how that is possible. In Foreskin's last job he claimed that all Social Security money was placed in a lock box. It was earmarked for that taxpayer. If that was true, there would be no added cost.
What he seems to be saying is that he wants the government to continue skimming your retirement money to fund their special interest programs."
LOL! That's witty, dude. And profound. Kudos.
Here's the real deal. Every week, you give gramps $10 to put into your savings account. In fact, Gramps blows the money on beer and lotto, and puts an IOU in the account.
Now you save $1 yourself, and only give him $9. He's out of pocket by the dollar that's really being saved.
That's exactly how Social Security is set up: the worker thinks he's saving the money, but the government is spending it. Any diversion of SS money into genuine savings comes directly out of the government's slush fund.
In a sane world, the 17th Amendment would be repealed. This election being great evidence why popular election of senators was one of the worst ideas in the history of anything.
The thing of it is, at least Erskine has a real home in North Carolina.
Why can't southerners just accept the fact that they lost the Civil War back in 1865. I moved to North Carolina from Pennsylvania, A Northern State, The state that probably had more to do with the South Losing the Civil War than any other, AND I am probably more conservative than you.
IN fact there probably isn't anyone on free republic further to the right than I am.
I am sure that you are aware that North Carolina's State Government has been in the hands of the Demonrats for the past 100 years. The Republicans have not controlled the State Senate Since 1900, and the Republicans have only held the State House a few times in the past 100 Years.
While it is true that North Carolinians tend to vote Republican for President, They vote RAT in everything else, and this is not a new thing. This is the southern people who still think that Republicans are the party of the North and they want to pull that Rat lever.
I must tell you moving from Pennsylvania to North Carolina I was shocked at how liberal this state is. The CCW Law here is outrageous, back in Pennsylvania you go to the sheriff's office, hand them $19.00, they run a criminal history check on you, and hand you your permit, good for 5 years. The only restrictions on the Pennsylvania permit is that you cannot carry into a Courthouse or Federal Building.
In North Carolina you must attend classes, $125.00 Min when you can actually find a class, Apply to the Sheriff which is another $90.00 then you have to wait 90 days while they check you out. Then there is a long list of where your permit is not any good. Any place that serves Alcohol, Sporting Events, Theaters, Churches, Schools, Universities, Banks, Government Offices, Courthouses Ect....
IN addition North Carolina makes you buy a purchase Permit EVERY TIME you want to buy a handgun, and there is a 7 day waiting period on handguns.
Pennsylvania has none of these idiot gun laws. Pennsylvania has some of the Toughest Laws in the nation on Abortion. North Carolina is fairly liberal on it's abortion laws.
I am sick and tired of Southern people fighting a war that was lost hundreds of years ago, not all Northern people are the Devil.
And with those left of center folks the RNC foists a left of center RINO on us as the 'conservative' candidate. You're exactly right though. I remember when Democrats in this state were more conservative than northern Republicans. And that's less than a generation ago. While RTP and areas like it have brought jobs (of course a lot of those jobs are filled by implants), I hate to say sometimes I'm not so sure the tradeoff has been worth it. And if I see one more bagel shop...LOL, sorry pet peeve.
Why can't the Southern People stop fighting a war that ended back in 1865?
I believe that man's law should reflect God's Law.
I believe attempting an Abortion, Fornication, Adultery, Blasphemy, Pornography, and Homosexuality should all be capital crimes.
I believe that the nation should go back to the laws at the time of it's founding when all of the above were banned.
Yet I am from the North, I know plenty of Southerners who are far more to the Left than I.
*Neither party will end compulsory government retirement.
*Social Security will eventually bankrupt the nation - it cannot be "fixed."
*Who owns the public mandated "private" accounts? Who votes the stock? Does the gov't "own" private enterprise, or will the great unwashed be voting in the boards and officers of America's economic engine? Will we tune in to Peter Jennings and Oprah to decide who will run Intel, Microsoft, Boeing, and Citicorp? Will it be fair to allow whites to shut out blacks from the boardroom? Will blacks be able to vote in equal strength with the more numerous white shareholders?
*The last generation in Social Security will pay the most and receive nothing (white Americans born in the 1960s). Expect riots.
*More Americans under 40 believe in UFOs than the likelihood they will ever receive Social Security. Both parties are out of touch with America.
*Today's "contributors" to Social Security, are not saving "their" money in any individual account. The money is going directly to the geriatrics. Today's taxpayers must compel the next generation to do likewise.
*If you believe the longterm viability of a conservative party (GOP if you must) hangs on "saving" Social Security, you are an idiot.
On another note, if we are pinning our "conservative" hopes on an empty suit like Liddy Dole, we have bigger problems than Daschle. Too bad both can't lose.
When Liddy ran for president, what were her issues? Kittens and warm milk? Pleasant spring days?
People like the Doles are why I no longer call myself a Republican. If that is the best we can do, I will pass.
That will be trumped by the great unwashed, the new owners of America's corporations via Social Security Index Accounts, electing whom Oprah tells them they must elect, and having the boardroom of America controlled by the media.
Be very afraid. A moron with a vote is a very dangerous thing.
Aw, come on. Tell us how you really feel.
If we did that we'd have to execute almost everyone on this forum. (Oh, no, no one here ever attempted to have sex before they got married and never said G*d damn it, no sir!)
If you have relocated and want to be accepted, why don't you start by pulling down that PA flag and put up your adopted NC flag?
Hostility toward the progeny of northern aggressors has been perpetuated by their coming south to reshape it in the image of their homeland. This has been accomplished by incessantly telling us how stupid, backward and wrong we are about any subject. And pointing out the fact that the CSA lost to the USA at every opportunity. Note that most of NC did not want to seceed from the union at that time.
Many of us extend our claws, like a cat, and scratch back. No good comes of it for either side, but it can be fun.
I hate bagels. Taste like wet cardboard. 8 * )
LOL! I know that's the way it goes now, I'm wondering who'll get to spend it if if gets 'privatized'. ; * )
The Democrats and the Republicans are a greater threatening evil to America than the Communist Party ever was.
Hell, in many ways (including the points you made) the Republicans/Democrats have conspired together to turn this country into a socialist state that Marx could have only dreamed of.
"Erskine Bowles has $xx million invested in the stock market, but he does not want you to have the same opportunity because he thinks its too 'risky' to allow you to make your own decisions about your own retirement."
