(Branford-WTNH, Sept. 18, 2002 9:00 PM) _ Federal, state and local law enforcement officials spent the day collecting evidence at a Branford car dealership.
Officials would not say what they were looking for at Shoreline Mitsubishi today.
But just after 2:00 PM, they started checking vehicles, writing down identification numbers, and in some cases jump starting various cars on the lot.
The investigation is a coordinated effort with agents from the FBI, secret service, department of motor vehicles, state police, and Branford police department working together on this case.
We're told in spite of the investigation, the dealership will open tomorrow. [Sept. 19]

Anything to do with those cars on Alligator Alley that alerted the bomb sniffing dogs???
What was the final verdict on why cars and tags didn't match?

I wonder why secret service would be there?

That's a great question... secret service makes no sense.
Shoreline Mitsubishi is at 165 N Main St in Branford, which is about a mile and a half from where I work (and from where I live). I hadn't heard anything about this. I will look in local papers and ask around.... this is very odd.

"Jump-starting" instead of getting in and turning the key. Dunno if that suggests "car bomb" or not.

Counterfeiting. SS is also responsible (T-men) for this little criminal enterprise. Looks like a bank fraud, counterfeit, and/or title/registration fraud going on.

Thanks for the update, posterkid. I just checked WTNH's web site and they have a second article now that points to some sort of financial swindle, maybe simple, maybe not. It's a fact that some of the terrorists did pass through hotels in Connecticut before 9/11, though I'm not aware of Branford area ties.
Car dealer investigated for fraud
(Branford-WTNH, Sept. 19, 2002 3:08 PM) _ New details are emerging about a shoreline auto dealership under investigation for fraud.
Wednesday, local, state and federal investigators descended upon Shoreline Mitsubishi on Route 1 off Exit 54.
A law enforcement source tells News Channel 8 investigators seized records and examined cars at the dealership as part of a nine-month fraud investigation.
Agents have been looking into what a source calls "irregularities in financial documents" at the dealership. The source says people who have never set foot in the dealership have somehow become co-signers on car loans.
One employee from the dealership tells News Channel 8 no one has any idea what was going on during yesterday's search, but that this appears to involve people who worked at the dealership in the past.
The dealership was open for business Thursday.
