This is really interesting. I thought that the day of the Irish Tinker was long over. Instead of a gypsy caravan now it's Econoline vans.

Regards,

He's a scammer, lives in a lavish house and screws folks out of their hard earned cash.

Well, if these people are gypsies then it all makes sense. They are said to be very hard on their children. I'm afraid that Martha is gone. She's probably with relatives in another state.

Amazing story, I had no idea the Irish tinkers were in the US. I knew there were gypsies here but though they were the Romanian kind. 40 years ago on a trip to Ireland, the tinkers would surround our car to beg money, whenever we stopped near them. They were always ragged & dirty.

There is no meat in this article, it is 100% supposition. An "expert" decides by looking at the same video that we all saw that he knows all about these people. Maybe the authorities haven't labelled them as travellers because they're not. Maybe they are. Maybe the "expert' guessed right. But, there is no proof of it in this article. It bothers me only because too many posters are using this as if it were a fact and then wisely nooding their heads saying "oh, now it makes sense."; as if no regular middle-class white American would ever treat her child like this.

It seems to me I have read somewhere that some of Bill Clinton's ancestry was from this "Irish gypsy" stock...it might have been in Meredith Oakley's book, but I'm not sure. It certainly would not be surprising if true.

These people may be the same bunch that came through my part of Kentucky back in the 60s. The scam was barn painting. Only lasted 'til the first hard rain.

When I was a child in central California in the 1940s and 1950s the Gypsies came to town every year around September. Their children would enroll in school, stay a month and then disappear. These were not Irish Gypsies, but Roma, I'm sure.

In 1956, when I was in college, I was working at JC Penney's. The fabric department received a whole shipment of pure silk chiffon for $1/yd -- pricey for fabric in those days, but reasonable for real silk. As an employee, I saw it first and immediately bought enough in Champagne to make a formal with a bouffant skirt, even though I did not have a pattern in mind.

It was lucky that I made such a quick decision, because the next day the Gypsies came through and bought every last inch of every color of silk chiffon on the table. All of the reds, oranges, purples, blacks, etc. became Gypsie creations, but I had enough to make my dress.

Should we profile Irish travelers now?

I saw a "special" on these Irish travelers some years ago..it is very interesting. Most "winter" in their hometowns (the special showed thier town in SC)..they live in very large expensive homes , they drive very expensive cars...all the fruit of being scam artists .

They are the ones that take $1000 from a little old lady to "fix " her leaky roof..throw a bit of tar on it and then disappear. They need your money in advance to buy paint and then they are gone with your money

There are some cultural distinctives to (did ya catch her slight broge? )They are very inbreed and insular people.

They sexualize the girls VERY early and inside the community they have the girsl of 7 or 8 made up and dressed like hookers

I believe marriages are arranged and they marry VERY young

My first thought on this was that the mother was very angry that her scam did not work..that the little girl may have triggered the refusal of the scam..and the beating was born out of that frustration..
