Emergency health care in 2000 was costliest for California border counties, where the total was $79.6 million, a study reports.

WASHINGTON - Communities along the nation's Southwest border are spending more than $200 million a year to provide health care for illegal immigrants, a report released Thursday said.

Lawmakers such as Kyl and Kolbe say the federal government should foot the bill for the illegal aliens.

Dorks.

(<dreaming> Uh, unless that's the federal government of Mexico, of course. </dreaming>)

Hmm! what is the Davis administration's stand on this?

To continue as is, means continued increase in budget deficits, and to stop the flow impacts the latino vote!

About 30 percent of the unreimbursed costs were for childbirths, either for illegal residents living in the United States or for women who cross the Mexican border just as they are about to give birth

Meet your new fellow Americans.

This study & the medical costs of illegals have been reported in papers accross the country in the last couple of days. However, instead of prompting a discussion about how to eliminate the incentives for illegals to come to America, instead of forcing a discussion about how Americans are paying too many taxes for services used by illegals, instead of talking about how to enforce our immigration laws, the study has only prompted a discussion by our politicians on how to shift/spread out the cost from the States to the Feds.

Controlling immigration, enforcing immigration laws and enforcing the border is the 5-ton elephant that nobody will talk about, and is not merely in the room, but squeezing those in the room out.

Just keep repeating "illegal aliens are good for the economy" until you are numb. If you say it long enough and loud enough it will be true. < /sarcasm >

The study was conducted by the Border Counties Coalition, which includes the 24 U.S. counties that touch Mexico.

Its not clear if these figures include metropolitan areas not adjacent to the border. Los Angeles County alone provides massive services to illegals and is now in the process of shutting down local clinics because of red ink. The problem is too huge for the federal government to hope to deal with so the border counties approach is probably about the best anyone can hope for.

Under federal law, hospitals are required to provide emergency care for anyone who seeks it, regardless of immigration status or ability to pay. The mandate hits hardest in the 24 border counties of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California that were the focus of the study.

It ends with emergency care. No anchor babies. No flu shots. No in-grown toenails. No nada!!

Look what happened in Texas. Hospital Probed for Immigrant Care

But why is this a subject of debate in the first place? These people shouldn't even be here!!

An INS official confirmed that injured persons are allowed emergency entry. She said port authorities were responsible for making sure they leave the country after treatment.

"Not my job to close the door. I only open doors. See the port authority if you want the door closed. Not in my union MOU."

"It ends with emergency care."

That may be what the law says, but just like the law is being thwarted by liberals regarding "affirmative action" in CA after the people passed Ward Connerly's Proposition 209 AND Gray Davis got a judge to wipe out the people passed Proposition 187 to stop illegals from getting medical and welfare services... None of this is being stopped!!!

The health insurance for members of the CA Farm Bureau is skyrocketing in cost due to this "Cost Shifting" by Hospital and Medical billings to private insurance!

I guess you could say: SHIFT HAPPENS!!!

Those dollar numbers are only the tip of the iceburg, it's not just illegals who are adding to the financial disaster that is building fast ---the legals from Mexico are also very often elderly being brought over by their now legalized children to benefit from SSI and Medicaid, many legals use the family reunification laws to "sponsor" relatives they immediately will get on government assistance. Besides all this health care costs there are the high costs of crime, education and the rest.

Letting the hospitals and clinics close will only cause them to flood to the north for free healthcare in other cities.

LOL!! I am familiar with Prop. 187. Anymore the laws only apply to you and me but not the illegal aliens.

I'm sorry - I should have said undocumented workers. I have to be politically correct don't ya know?

• About 10 percent of the costs can be traced to the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which sends emergency cases to hospitals, leaving the community to pick up the tab.

Saw a Congresscritter on O'Reilly explain that once these border dodgers make it to a hospital, they're in the clear. Anyone who takes custody of them from the hospital is liable for the bill...so they walk into society and we pick-up the tab.

This is insidious! It was bad enough in the late 80's and early 90's with cost-shifting from Medicare and MediCal patients drove costs insane with the outcome of HMO's who only majored in minor illness and so-called "Preventive Medicine," to say nothing of the indigent who crowded into UCD Med Center's ER on Stockton Blvd. But now those ranks are swelling with wave after wave of illegals, too!

I swear! Not only are Democrats desensitized, they are desensitizing our entire society for perpetuating votes and bankrupting our insurance to force us into the realm of desensitizing EU/Canadian socialized medicine. Socialized Law, (Public Defenders) quality of service also reminds me of socialized medicine. (thought I'd inject this into your realm)(grin)

"In order to carry out the intention of the People of California that, excepting emergency medical care as required by federal law, only citizens of the United States and aliens lawfully admitted to the United States may receive the benefits of publicly-funded health care, and to ensure that all persons employed in the providing of those services shall diligently protect public funds from misuse, the provisions of this section are adopted." -- Proposition 187

Not only was this most rational people ratified CA law grudgingly enforced, it was the first thing that Gray Davis sued upon taking office! It was one of many rational things and elected leaders that Liberals demonized with the bumpersticker... "MEAN PEOPLE SUCK!"

CA couples between the ages of 55 and 65 are paying more than their mortgage payments for Health Insurance if they have any. If they let it lapse, they are natually among the riskiest as they are almost ready for Medicare and most are declined by underwriters.

If you are the child of an illegal alien, you have better medical/dental/vision coverage through MediCal(welfare) than is even offered at any price to CA couples age 55-65.

Am I the only one on this forum that finds this obscene?
