Scott Garrett for Congress

I wanted to drop everyone a note regarding where Assemblyman Garrett will be this weekend, and what he will be up to. Please pay special attention to the note after the schedule on an upcoming debate, and how to get tickets.

Saturday:

9:00am Scott will be attending a candidates Breakfast hosted by the Ridgewood GOP, and the Ridgewood Republican Committee with Special Guest Steve Malzberg. The Breakfast will be at Café Wineberrie, 30 Oak Street, Ridgewood, NJ

11:00am Scott is scheduled to be at the Bergenfield Street fest/Sidewalk Sale. The Bergenfield Republican Club has a booth on Washington Ave. Please join Scott as he is further introduced to the people of Ridgewood. Scott will be spending a lot of time in Bergenfield, so if you can make it out to be with Scott

during the day, it would be greatly appreciated.

Scott will later be attending the Bloomingdale Pride and

Arts Festival on his way to an event back in Sussex County. The exact time of his arrival and departure at this event will be determined based on how things go in Bergenfield.

Sunday:

12:00pm Scott will be at the Ridgewood Country Fair on East Ridgewood Avenue. The Ridgewood Republican Club will have a Booth that Scott will meet at. This is another event that will be important to have a crowd with Scott. Word is that Torricelli will be campaigning at this event with our opponent Anne Sumers. It will be interesting to see someone who almost never votes (Anne) out campaigning with someone who apparently is willing to accept all sorts of money to vote.

Other Information:

Debate: On October 7th, Assemblyman Garrett and Ms. Sumers will be participating in a debate at Ramapo College sponsored by the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey. THERE ARE A LIMITED NUMBER OF TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR THIS EVENT, AND THEY ARE FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. Please, ASAP, go to http://www.cianj.orgto order your tickets. Right near the top

of the web page is a link to click on which reads, "5th District Congressional Debate-Click Here for Tickets." There is a limit of two tickets per person and space is limited. We can be assured that Anne's supporters are going to rush to snatch up these tickets so they can stack the deck. I encourage you, even if you aren't sure you can go, to get your two tickets ordered right away. We can find people later to use them if you can't.

Phoning: We have phones running constantly at the Midland Park office and the BCRO. If you can take some time to work a phone bank, please let me know. Phones are running AT LEAST 6:00-9:00 Mon through Thurs, and likely at other times if you are available. We will also have phones running in Warren County, and can always have people phoning in our Newton Office. Please commit to a little or a lot of time each week and we'll get you scheduled.

Letters to The Editor:

If you haven't (or even if you have but it has been awhile) submitted a letter to the editor and would be willing, please respond to this email and I'll get one to you that you can send. This is an important component to the campaign, and all you have to do is send an email.

Scott on Television:

This Sunday New Jersey Network (NJN) will air a debate that was taped today between Scott and his opponent. The debate is on "On the Record" with Michael Aron. The debate will air at 9:00am and will be rebroadcast at 11:00am both this Sunday, the 29th of September. Any questions or comments on the campaign, please feel free to contact me any time.

Sunday, October 6, 2002, is the last day to register voters. There are over One million Catholics in New Jersey who are not registered to vote.

Please ask your pastor to put a notice in the Sunday Bulletin and to have registration forms available.

People who have moved since they last voted, women who have gotten married and changed their names, students who are away at school and anyone who has become a citizen or turned eighteen need to register.

Every election is won by the person who gets the most votes and too many Catholics are not voting. Only one person in eight will vote for the winner in most elections.

Half the people are not registered and half the people who are do not vote. That means only one in 4 are voting and half of them vote for the loser.

If we can get one more person in every pew to vote and vote for the candidates who support Catholic teaching we all will win.

To download the registration form: http://www.state.nj.us/lps/elections/voter_reg_app.pdf

There will be a Brotherhood Breakfast featuring the Fifth Congressional District candidates, Scott Garrett and Anne Summers at the River Edge Temple Sholom on Sunday morning, Oct 6th at 9:00 AM. The public is invited to attend. Cost is $3.00 per person. No reservations required.

I’m sure Ms. Summers will draw her usual crowd of paid(?) minions. So I believe it is important that all who support Scott Garret’s conservative positions, e.g. on abortion, education and the 2nd amendment show up in support.

Apparently, Ms Summers, a turncoat Republican, was persuaded to run against Scott when she realized he had to expend a good deal of his war chest in a tough primary fight.

I believe what is needed to combat her reprehensible campaign of well-funded lies about Scott is a good old-fashioned, traditional grass roots effort. A good turnout for Scott on the 6th would be a good way to contribute to that effort.

On Monday, October 7, the New Jersey Senate will likely vote on SB 573 (formerly SB 890). This bill, sponsored by Senator Dick Codey (D-27), is a COMPLETE HANDGUN BAN masquerading as a "childproof" handgun bill.

As currently written, SB 573 would set in motion an ultimate ban of all new models of handguns in New Jersey if so-called "smart guns" are introduced to the market. And even if just one of these "smart guns" was pulled off
the market for any reason, the ban would still remain.

Simply put, SB 573 seeks to ban ALL current models of handguns in New Jersey. As you may recall, the Senate has debated this issue before and is aware that so-called "smart" or "personalized" handgun technology does not exist.

Amazingly, police are exempted from this mandate. If "smart gun" technology is so "smart," why would the one occupation in which employees carry guns regularly-law enforcement-be exempt from using it?

And if that were not bad enough, this past Monday, Senate proponents and Governor Jim McGreevey`s (D) office worked to amend this legislation to give the government complete immunity should there be a technological failure of any "smart gun."

This came after another round of testimony from firearm experts and members of the pro-gun community that exposed the potential unreliability of "smart gun" technology.

In other words, proponents of this bill want to mandate handgun designs that are currently unavailable and unproven for all law-abiding gun owners, but fearing that one of these government-mandated "smart guns" is actually
produced, and there is a catastrophic technological failure that causes injury or loss of life, the government wants to ensure that it cannot be held accountable for mandating and approving the firearm.

It is imperative that you contact your State Senator immediately and ask him to vote NO on SB 573! Also be sure to express your indignation that the government wishes to mandate unavailable, unproven, and potentially
unreliable handgun designs, but remove itself from any possibility of being held accountable should such designs lead to tragic injuries or loss of life. If you are unsure of how to reach your Senator, please call the main State Legislature information line,

(609) 292-4840,

and ask for assistance. Those with access to the Internet can also use our "Write Your Representatives" tool at

From Fr. Peter West

Bret Schundler will be the featured speaker at the College of St. Elizabeth's 7th Annual "Life: An Inalienable Right" lecture series. This is a series that not only deserves your suppport, but if you haven't heard Mr. Schundler speak on the life issue, it is also a lecture you shouldn't miss.

Eloquent, thoughtful, moving . . . barely begin to describe what Mr.Schundler has to say on this issue.

Mr. Schundler's spiritual and philosophical journey from one who once supported "women's right to choose" to a man who, at great cost to his own political career, changed to an unequvocal pro-life stance is one we all need to hear if we hope to win hearts and minds to the Gospel of Life. His message is also a genuinely ecumenical one. As an elder of the Presbyterian church, his message deserves to be heard by clergy and laymen of all faiths -- Protestant, Catholic, Jew and Muslim. Your presence at this lecture is an important statement of your own convictions as well. Bring your pastor and a friend.

Time: Tuesday, October 8, 2002, 7 P.M.
Place: Mahoney Library, College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station Admission is FREE.

1. Pro-Life Prayer Service

Sponsored by the Pregnancy Services Network of Greater New York Thursday, October 10 at the Calvary Baptist Church on West 57th Street (Between 6th and 7th Avenues) from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Come for all or any part of this prayer service.

New York City needs more prayer for peace, for harmony, for reconciliation from the moment of conception on.

NO RSVP NECESSARY. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND PRAY.

2. Men's Prayer Breakfast Saturday October 12

This breakfast is sponsored by the People of Hope, it is an opportunity for Christian men to come to terms with the challenge of Christian discipleship and leadership in an age when the mere mention of Christ, Our Lord, in public life has become not merely unpopular, but often even forbidden.

The theme this time is taken from Romans 4: 8-9: " . . . but what proves that God loves us is that Christ died for us while we were still sinners."

Be prepared to join other men in a heart-warming and heartfelt affirmation of the Christian faith through prayer, fellowship, and inspiring talk and discussion. And the free full Breakfast is something to rave about, too.
The talk last time was unforgettable.

If your spiritual batteries could use a recharge, come join us on Saturday, Oct.12. 2002, 8:00 am to 9:30 pm, at Koinonia Academy, Plainfield Avenue,Plainfield, NJ.

Directions: Take Route 22 to West End Avenue, Plainfield. Follow West End through North Plainfield (the street name changes to Grant Avenue). At Sherman Avenue, turn left, then go 2 blocks and turn right onto Plainfield Avenue. Entrance to Koinonia Academy is on the right. Breakfast is in the Gymnasium, which is also the largest building on the property. If in doubt, follow the crowd -- 200 or more men are expected.

SCHOOL CHOICE CONFERENCE
November 19, 2002
East Brunswick New Jersey.

Parents who want to send their children to a non-government run school must pay for three educations. They pay property taxes to send their neighbors to the local public school, they pay State Income taxes to pay for the children in the urban areas that are funded by State taxes and then they pay tuition to a school of their choice.

In Camden, New Jersey, 10 out of 22 schools had 100% of the fourth graders fail to pass the Fourth Grade reading test. The best school had 19% pass the test.

Following the US Supreme Courts decision to allow school choice to continue in Cleveland ,Ohio, the Camden City Council has unanimously backed parental choice and vouchers.

Excellent Education for Everyone (E3) has begun to organize parents in Camden and have registered over 3000 people to vote. They have also hired grassroots organizers to work all over the state and have been taking community leaders and elected officials to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where school choice has been in place for twelve years now.

They aim to improve urban public schools with the competitive pressure of school choice.

A Free Conference on Public Education Reform - "Bringing Milwaukee to New Jersey" will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at the Brunswick Hilton in East Brunswick Rt18 and the Turnpike. It begins with Lunch at 1PM and workshops all afternoon. They are also having a fundraising dinner. For more information Call 973-286-7791. Tickets are $250. Scholarships are available.

RENEGADE “republican” GROUP

LINKED TO FORRESTER IS EXPOSED

Forrester Vows to Work with Extremist Group Known for

Attacking George W. Bush and Dick Cheney

On Tuesday, October 22, 2002, U.S. Senate Candidate Douglas Forrester enthusiastically embraced the endorsement of the “Republican” Pro-Choice Coalition, an antagonist group most known for opposing President George W. Bush. “I look forward to working with the RPCC,” said Forrester in a campaign press release. In an even more surprising revelation, the endorsement announcement from the fringe pro-abortion group refers to a secret written commitment provided by Doug Forrester in order to win their endorsement.

RPCC Opposes Bush Nominees

The so-called “Republican” Pro-Choice Coalition leads the national effort to block President Bush’s judicial nominees. Most recently, this group worked against the Bush Administration in defeating the nomination of Priscilla Owen to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. Currently, the RPCC is working to defeat Michael McConnell nominated by President Bush to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

After George W. Bush chose Dick Cheney as his running mate in 2000, the RPCC denounced the distinguished leader as a “reactionary.”

RPCC REFUSED to Endorse

Republican George W. Bush against Democrat Al Gore

In 2000, this so-called “Republican” group refused to endorse George W. Bush as the Republican nominee for President. They have refused to support George W. Bush as the Republican nominee for President and have worked with groups who even threatened to support Democrat Al Gore in 2000.

RPCC Honors Partial Birth Abortionist

In August 2000, RPCC honored one of their most prominent members, Nebraska partial birth abortionist LeRoy Carhart, with a reception during the RNC Convention. Carhart received a hero’s welcome as the man who challenged Nebraska’s ban on partial birth abortion. This particular abortionist argued before the U.S. Supreme Court for his right to continue performing the gruesome late term partial birth abortion technique. The Republican Platform refers specifically to this ruling, saying the decision “shocks the conscience of the nation.” The renegade RPCC opposes the partial birth abortion ban overwhelmingly passed by the House of Representatives on July 25, 2002. http://www.rpcc.org/000530.html

RPCC leads fight to remove pro-life plank from the Republican Platform

This group is dedicated to removing the pro-life plank from the Republican platform and has been outspokenly critical of President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. They have refused to support George W. Bush as the Republican nominee for President and have worked with groups who even threatened to support Democrat Al Gore in 2000.

Does Doug Forrester Stand with President Bush or with the Anti-Bush RPCC?

NJ voters are entitled to know if Forrester embraces the radically extreme agenda of this group. Did Forrester pledge in writing, as the RPCC claims, to oppose the Bush agenda in the U.S. Senate? Did Forrester pledge in writing, as the RPCC claims, to lead the effort to alter the Republican Platform pro-life plank?

Voters on both sides of the issue deserve to know whether Forrester will side with President Bush or this renegade “Republican” group on important policies, nominations, appointments and the Republican platform.

In the interest of full disclosure, New Jersey Right to Life-PAC urges Forrester to release the secret written agreement between this fringe pro-abortion group and the Forrester campaign so that NJ voters can decide where Douglas Forrester really stands.

Four Newspapers Endorse Doug Forrester

Newspapers Say Forrester is Right for NJ;
Media Endorsements Say Lautenberg Campaign is Out-of-Touch, Out-of-Step, Out-of-Sight

TRENTON--Doug Forrester`s issue-oriented campaign this week has earned the endorsements of four major newspapers, all of them noting that Frank Lautenberg`s vacuous campaign has failed to address the important issues, engage in a meaningful debate, or defend his ultra-liberal voting record.

``While Doug Forrester has been engaged in a constructive dialogue with New Jersey voters, Frank Lautenberg has been hiding and ducking from any real discussion on the issues, presumably because he cannot defend an indefensible record,`` said Senator Joe Kyrillos, Republican State Chairman. ``When it comes to the issues that matter most to New Jersey voters, Frank Lautenberg has proven he is out-of-touch, out-of-step and virtually out-of-sight.``

In their endorsements, major media outlets have outlined the following reasons why we need to elect Doug Forrester for U.S. Senate and why New Jersey voters should keep Frank Lautenberg in retirement:

The New York Post, October 28, 2002
FORRESTER: RIGHT ON THE ISSUES
``The Republican has done a credible job of redefining the campaign around central issues, like national security and government spending - and in drawing a sharp contrast with his compulsively liberal opponent.

``By proving that he`s more than just an anti-Torricelli candidate, Doug Forrester has earned our support, and we heartily endorse him.``

LAUTENBERG: OUT-OF-TOUCH
``Lautenberg, on the other hand, has a woeful record, having opposed the 1991 Gulf War (on the grounds that it would produce ``tens of thousands of American casualties``), voted to freeze or cut defense and intelligence spending--and opposed the death penalty for terrorists.

``Lautenberg now says he`s reversed his position on all of those issues. Sure, why not--the election comes but 14 short months after 9/11, and New Jersey was hard-hit by the sneak attack.

``But it won`t take Lautenberg long to revert to form, should he return to the Senate. And given Lautenberg`s stealth campaign, it`s difficult to judge him on anything other than his prior Senate record, which shows him to be a traditional tax-and-spend, big-government liberal.``

The Courier-Post, October 27, 2002
FORRESTER: RIGHT ON THE ISSUES
``...Forrester is quick to point out the unfair tax burdens placed on N.J. residents and supports permanent tax reduction to help the economy. He also promises a watchful eye when it comes to congressional pork-barrel projects.``

LAUTENBERG: OUT-OF-SIGHT
``The voters should keep in mind how Frank Lautenberg`s name got on the ballot and vote accordingly--especially given Lautenberg`s reluctance to meet Forrester in one-on- one debates.``

The Asbury Park Press, October 27, 2002
FORRESTER: RIGHT ON THE ISSUES
``So much of Forrester`s platform is right for New Jersey and for the nation. He would add a moderate voice to the Republican side of the aisle just when it is needed most.``

LAUTENBERG: OUT-OF-STEP
``Lautenberg is pandering to the state`s senior citizens, boasting of his support of Social Security and Medicare while hiding from his sorry record on issues that affect older Americans. He helped create the tax on Social Security benefits that hits 400,000 in New Jersey.``

The Express Times, October 21, 2002
FORRESTER: RIGHT ON THE ISSUES
``He says he would`ve voted for the resolution authorizing President Bush to take action if necessary against Iraq--and he notes that Lautenberg voted to try to keep the previous President Bush from intervening in Kuwait and Iraq against Saddam Hussein in 1991.``

LAUTENBERG: OUT-OF-TOUCH
``Voters should recognize that the 2002 Senate election is a choice between a moderate Republican running a straightforward campaign and a surrogate for a disgraced pol.``
