FBI: Maryland shootings fit no category Agency profilers can see no motive other than terrorism

WASHINGTON – It's not gang-banging. Or spree-shooting. Or armed robbery. And it's not a serial killer.

So what would motivate two assailants to randomly target five victims in a Maryland suburb, and possibly a sixth in D.C., killing each with a single shot from a high-powered rifle?

The calculated shootings, which took place Wednesday and Thursday, are like none that federal investigators have seen.

"If some sicko just wants to go out and essentially assassinate a bunch of random people – and he's not a terrorist – it's almost like a new category" of crime, said a veteran FBI agent.

The perpetrators aren't spree shooters, FBI profilers have concluded.

Typically, spree shooters are loners who snap one day and fire away until police appear and they come to their own violent end.

They typically seek revenge on an employer, such as the post office, or fellow students at a school. They come to the scene loaded with weapons, and take a stand, spraying victims with bullets.

But in this case, two men in a white van or "box truck" did not spray bullets, but picked targets, trained a rifle, or rifles, on their victims and aimed to kill, like trained assassins.

"In a spree shooting, there are usually a lot of people wounded," said one agent. "The shooter is not really taking time to aim."

"This is much more cold and calculated than the typical spree shooting," he said. "The victims were not wounded."

What's more, the sniper, or snipers, didn't take a stand, but sped off to avoid capture.

"This is different – they've taken great steps to avoid being apprehended," he added.

Authorities are said to have a description of the shooters but are not releasing it. They've reviewed video tapes from security cameras at some of the businesses where the shootings took place.

"The idea of terrorism is to spread fear," said one law enforcement officer. "If that's what they wanted to do, they've succeeded, because there's a lot of fear in the Washington area right now."

Though al-Qaida training videotapes and manuals captured in Afghanistan specifically show the planning of attacks on Americans in drive-by shootings, experts who have analyzed those materials are cautious about concluding the murder spree outside of Washington yesterday is connected in any way to terrorism.

The videotapes and training manuals, which show Osama lin Laden's terrorists have prepared to kill Americans with small-arms fire from trucks and vans, were first revealed in a WorldNetDaily report last month.

But John Holschen of Insights Training Center, who produced a report on the tape for military and law enforcement officials, said the rash of shootings in a small area of suburban Washington in a short period of time is unusual but not altogether unique.

"It's not inconceivable that this will turn out to be a terrorist attack," he said. However, he cautioned against jumping to any conclusions without more information.

The training video captured in Afghanistan shows al-Qaida operatives practicing the following kinds of assaults:

using pickup trucks with shooters concealed in the bed of the trucks;
using motorcycles as a shooting platform for drive-bys and assassinations;
execution of prisoners;
ambushes of law-enforcement officers;
residential assassinations;
assassination on a golf course using a rocket-propelled grenade and rifle fire;
drive-up kidnapping of target walking on a street;
use of tunnels, storm drains and sewers for infiltration during urban raids;
rappelling from rooftops of buildings to make entry on upper floors;
use of motorcycles for grenade attacks; and
raids on buildings with large numbers of occupants – perhaps schools or office buildings.
Skip Gouchenour, a licensed detective in Pennsylvania who has analyzed the videotape and other training materials and made a presentation on them for the Pennsylvania Detectives Association, agreed that the Maryland shooting and murder spree is very unusual.

"I'm not dismissing the possibility of a terrorist connection," he said. "It's strange, indeed."

Gouchenour specializes in investigating murder cases for district attorneys, defense attorneys, police agencies and private citizens. He says he has run across similar murder sprees in his career, but finds some of the details of this case unusual.

Police across the Washington area are searching for what they describe as "a skilled shooter" who killed five people in a random death spree beginning Wednesday night and continuing yesterday morning in Montgomery County, Md.

The shootings took place at two shopping centers, two gas stations and on the lawn outside an auto dealership along Rockville Pike. The victims were ordinary people doing ordinary things on a seemingly ordinary day.

As a result of the attacks, children were kept indoors at schools in the county.

"We do have someone that so far has been very accurate in what they are attempting to do, and so we probably have a skilled shooter," said Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose yesterday. Police said they are looking for a small, slightly damaged white truck that may have black lettering on the side. Witnesses to the shootings said they saw a truck matching that description leaving some of the crime scenes.

Montgomery County police spokesman Derek Baliles said police suspect the shooter was armed with a rifle.

About 40 minutes before the first killing, a shot was fired through a window of a Michael's craft store in the 3800 block of Aspen Hill Road. No one was hurt, but Montgomery County police said they believe the incident may have been related to what followed.

The first fatal shooting occurred Wednesday night at 6 o'clock, when James Martin, 55, of Silver Spring was killed in the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse at Randolph Road and Georgia Avenue in Wheaton. By yesterday morning, the stores in the area were open for business as usual. A security tape from a camera that monitors the lot had been turned over to police.

Then about 7:40 a.m., James Buchanan was pushing a lawn mower over a narrow strip of grass in front of the Fitzgerald Auto Mall on Rockville Pike when he was shot.

The next victim was Premkumar A. Walekar, a part-time cab driver. It was about 8:10 a.m., at a Mobil gas station on Aspen Hill Road at Connecticut Avenue in Aspen Hill, when the killer struck and Walekar died pumping gas.

About 8:30 a.m., Sarah Ramos, 34, was sitting on a bench at the shopping center near the Leisure World retirement community off Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring when the killer next took aim and fired.

It was just before 10 a.m. at a Shell gas station in Kensington and Lori Lewis-Rivera, 25, was vacuuming her minivan. The station, at the corner of Knowles and Connecticut avenues in the heart of Kensington, is visible from all directions. But again the killer struck as if coming from nowhere.

Throughout the day the manhunt intensified, but as night fell there had been no arrests. Though authorities have downplayed the possibility of terrorism, the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Secret Service have all been involved in the investigation.

Oh, No, couldn't be. Oh, and thank goodness some of the victims were white, so it's not a hate crime either.

Yeah, go figure. We're not allowed to see who it is that's trying to kill us. They're probably pixifixing the tapes to make it look like a couple of angry white militia types.

My feeling is that this was just a practice run for the main event - coming to a Main Street, Anytown USA near you. If you have a carry permit, or live in a free state, now's the time to exercise your 2nd Amendment duty and stay vigilant, should these terrorists forget that Americans are slow to anger, but merciless once the balloon goes up.

" And it's not a serial killer. "

No, Mr. Du Mass Profiler, it's a couple of serial killers.

First, every alphabet agency in the area trots out various rifles that might use .222, .223 or .224 cal. ammo and puts them on a table at the circus.

Now they come out with this statement that they don't really know what or who to look for?

The air between the collective ears of these agencies is infinite.

They could learn a thing or two from the Borg...

The killing spree that began in Montgomery county appears to have continued last evening with the shooting of a man in DC, and then later today with the shooting of a woman at Michaels in Fredericksburg.

This looks remarkably like the string of killings a few years back where the guy started out Friday evening shooting folks near a Northside Chicago synagogue, and ended up a number of killings later with him shooting a Korean kid going into or out of a church in Bloomington, Indiana.

In that case the killer belonged to one of a number of "Identity" churches. These are neo-Nazi operations whose false prophets preach evil doctrines.

Their big complaint is against Jews (and not "the Jews"), and what they call ZOG, or Zionist Operated Government.

Some of the Ku Klux Klan types in Howard County Md (adjacent to Montgomery) have Identity affiliations as do both of the major motorcycle gangs in the area (one of which is called "The Pagans". I don't know the other, but rival gang's name.)

The lady killed sitting on a bench in front of the post office is instructive in this regard. She was an Identity "two-fer". First of all, she's there at the post office, and secondly, this is the one that serves the local Leisure World retirement community. I don't know about that one, but I know about a couple of others where we have inlaws, and most of the folks living in those communites are Jewish.

If I am correct in my "profiling" these guys shot her because she was near Leisure World, and maybe also because she was near the post office (their sworn enemy so we are told which is why I pay attention to news about these guys.)

The other situations involve people in or near businesses popularly believed (according to Identity affiliate propaganda sites) to be Jewish owned. It doesn't matter who owns these businesses as long as Identity believes what it believes. They will act on their belief.

Their own literature tells us that all the rest of us are potential targets. Either we willingly do business with Jews, or we are Jews, or we are friends with one, or we live near one, or we are out in the parking lot, or whatever reason they can think of to kill people.

You just know these guy's suffer from some serious sexual dysfunction that does not respond to viagra.

But, that's beside the point. The methodology is the same.

Oh, yes, does anyone out there know why all the cops believe the shooter to be a white male? (No one has seen the shooter, so how is it that they know this to be true?)

It is not surprising the FBI admits it doesn't have a clue. No doubt one of their big boys thinks its Eric Rudolph, tanned, rested and ready from his vacation in a North Carolina cave.

This sure sounds terror related. If so, we should expect a claim of responsibility in the not too distant future. Also, if terror related, I hope it's not more than a couple of these guys and doesn't grow nationally. If so, I'd expect my gov't ought to deport a lot of people or be faced with a lot of these people being discriminated against (violently, I might add).

I live in Howard County and have never seen nor heard of any organized KKK activity in the county. (BTW, this county unfortunately is very liberal and stocked with DemonRAT supporters.) As far as the "Pagans" motorcycle gang is concerned, I haven't heard anyting about them in over twenty years. I believe they now hang out on the eastern shore beach towns like Ocean City, Md and Rehobeth Beach, Delaware. And also in New Jersey. Some have said that they've seen them in Edgewater or North Beach, Maryland.

My guess : The authorities are not releasing the race because the two men are of "middle eastern" appearance, and all decent, right thinking government bureaucrats and officials know that everybody outside their little social circle and alumni association is a rednecktrailertrashxenophobicneanderthal, who'll go out and murder anyone who looks vaguely "foreign" if they have an excuse. Sorta like those broadcasters who forced the "I'm an American!" public service announcements on us post 09/11 : They know all of us "out here" in flyover country are a bunch of trigger-happy morons, so they have to release heavy-handed, maudlin sermonettes over the airwaves to keep us from running amuck. Or to put it another way : Remember that utterly repulsive article from Paul Begala (sp?) in which he basically called all the people in the states that voted for Bush homophobic klan member psychoes. That's how a lot of the most influential, powerful people in the country think about people like us. Like that female thing in the WJC admin, who said (a little before OKC) that what made Vietnam so tragic was the unelite status of the common soldier-"farmboys from the south and the midwest", is how she put it. Elite contempt .

The Fox News profilers
1. men between the ages of 25-45
2. Love Guns
3. Read "Soldier of Fortune" and or "Guns and Ammo" magazines
4. Are deer hunters and may have also killed a moose
5. Go on hunting trips to "like Canada or out west"
6. Spend a lot of time at shooting ranges
7. Brag about "what their guns can do"
8. Name people or groups of people they dont like
The dectective FOX interviewed said that we need to go into gun stores and get out the records of people who have recently purchased "these kinds" of guns
The feds were busy showing everyone evil black "assault hunting" rifles and telling civilians to be on the lookout for an AR15 rifle and report anyone they see with one...the police will question the owners and see if they can legally own one...
The feds had a table filled with assault rifles and one bolt action rifle...
They kept saying they had the caliber of the round (before ballistics had examined the evidence)
Because they had the remains of a 223 bullet they had already decided what type of gun was used
They claimed the round was a 22 cal and had rounds from 22 up to what looked like a slap anti tank round which the cameral focused upon...
FOX put out a list of weapons
Buzz words were bandied about..Devastating Long Range Paramilitary Assault Hunting Rifle
IMO this was more of an opportunity to push Clintons agenda against firearms than
a press release about who what why
Lon Horuchi would be proud..

Trying to strike terror into the hearts of U.S. citizens? The shootings were consistent with Al Qaida training tapes

One of the motives for attacking the WTC was to disrupt the US economy. For the past year, consumer spending has been propping up the economy. The attacks in Maryland and today in Virginia could have been designed to strike terror into the hearts of U.S. citizens as you said but it also could have been intended to keep them indoors and away from public places. I posted on another thread that I had been thinking for a while that such random and anonymous attacks would make sense as the next step. The impression will be that no place is safe.

If these attacks are the work of terrorists, I would expect to see similar attacks in other regions of the country. My guess (and it is only that) would be the suburban shopping areas around other large cities, say Chicago, St. Louis or Dallas.

If other such attacks do not occur or further attacks occur in the same corridor as the current attacks, I would chalk it up to an isolated group of individuals - terrorists or not.
