CORRALITOS, Calif.(AP) - A man with the environmental activist group Earth First! has died after a 50-foot fall from a redwood tree in which he'd lived for several weeks.

Rescue personnel were called to the scene of a logging operation in the Ramsey Gulch area about 20-miles south of San Jose on Tuesday night after loggers heard moans coming from the area where a group of tree-sitters has been camped since August, the group said. It was unclear how long the injured man had been on the ground.

Oh, my God. And there's a tree-hugger sitting on the lawn in front of the State Capitol in Sacramento on the fourth day of a hunger strike - she's vowing not to eat until Gov. Davis signs some law to protect the Red Woods. They seem to value trees more than human life.

Someone needs to go buy a big lunch and have a picnic right in front of her. When I was in college there was a fellow on campus who would order pizzas, chips and beer and sit in front of all the protester that were having a "starve-in" and cause great distress among their ranks.

The Monkeys Water The Trees

A tale from one of the Buddha's previous lives, as retold by Phra Depvedi

The king's park-keeper wanted to celebrate a festival in the city. Therefore be wanted to find some people to water the trees so that he could take a leave for a week or so. He wondered to himself, 'How can I find some people to look after the trees?' Then he thought of the monkeys in the park.

He summoned the chief monkey. 'Can you water the trees for me during my leave?'

The chief monkey said, 'Oh, sure.'

The park-keeper said to him, 'Here are the watering pots. Please tell the monkeys in this park to water the trees while I am gone.' Then he went away.

When the time came for watering the trees, the chief monkey said to the other monkeys who had gathered to take the watering pots, 'One moment, please. We have to use water economically. How can we do so? We have to water the trees according to their needs. How can we know the needs of the trees? The tree with long roots needs uch water; the tree with short roots needs less water. We should make a division of labor by dividing the monkeys into groups.

Two monkeys to a group: One monkey pulls up the tree to see if it has long or short roots. The other monkey, when he sees, "'Oh, this one has short roots" -- waters it less. If it has long roots, he should water it more.'

The monkeys divided their labor in this way. They watered all the trees in the garden park, and all the trees died. Then a wise man came and saw what the monkeys were doing. The chief monkey, who considered himself very wise, explained his orders. Then the wise man uttered this stanza:

A foolish person, even when he wants to do something good, may instead do something that leads to destruction.

Case like this must really frustrate the lawyers, what with the difficulty in obtaining the "victim's" testimony and all.

If a goo-goo Liberal falls out of his "NO Logging!" platform in a forest tree and is impaled upon his own "Kill Corporate Executives!" signs and there is no one there to hear his shrieks demanding top-cost LifeFlight out to the best hospital available on taxpayers' expense, is anyone really hurt and does anybody really die?

Apparently he had spent time in forests of Northern California, but the group said he never had tree sat before.

Where does one go to receive proper training in the highly skilled profession of 'tree sitting'? Sounds like OSHA should get involved since he wasn't properly trained in the safety aspects his job? Why don't 'tree sitters' have to be state liscensed like plumbers and other tradesmen? I have a thousand more questions I'd like to ask.....

She [Butterfly Hill] came down in 1999 after Pacific Lumber Co. agreed to leave the tree standing in return for $50,000 to make up for lost logging revenue.

As a follow up, Butterfly called her tree - "Luna." Not long after she came down from "Luna" someone made some serious cuts on "Luna" and almost killed the tree. I'm surprised no one called this a "hate" crime. (Yipes! I might give these tree huggers some ideas.)

Too late! They've been using that absurd canard since a few days after the incident. Check this quote from the official Julia Butterfly No-Life Professional Agitator Hill website, located at: http://www.circleoflifefoundation.org/lunanews/

What You Can Do for Luna FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2000 Thank you for all of the prayers and concern that you have shown for Luna. Many people have expressed a desire to make a pilgrimage to Luna. She is extremely vulnerable and we are concerned about any unnecessary pressure to her root system. The grove surrounding Luna is also a crime site and as you can imagine we don't want to inadvertently destroy any evidence about the perpetrators of this hate crime. Julia suggests that anyone who wants to visit Luna plant a tree in honor of what Luna symbolizes: perseverance, strength and healing. Read more.

In other words, there were other Earth Firsters around, but they wouldn't give up their place in the tree to save this guy. The life of the tree was more important.

This doesn't surprise me one bit. I was involved in the neo-Pagan/Wiccan spiritual scene for about ten years. Even when I SYMPATHIZED with "Earth-based religion" I was appalled at the callous misanthropy of the Earth First! types who infest that movement. They LITERALLY WANTED BILLIONS OF HUMANS TO DIE to "save the Earth" from destruction. That kind of heartless, brainless nihilism, coupled with their navel-gazing self-absorption that completely excludes unhip patriarchal concepts like honor, loyalty and common decency towards other humans, guarantees scenarios like this. Perhaps if these creeps had been like old-school radicals, who at least HELPED fallen comrades during struggles, this man might have lived.

Interesting; had it not been for loggers, who this eco-whaco was protesting, he may have died. I wonder, did he spit in the face of his rescuers? Does he have any gratitude to them? Would he have done the same for one of them? Or for a lone hunter who was hurt?
