I'm not impressed with the "blonde woman" description either. I thought it could be one of the perps (the one who was the driver at the time) wearing a wig (they'd have to think that with everybody paying attention to the area vans someone would eventually notice the driver), but it could be like you said that the one who was spotted has long hair.

Unless, of course, the shooter is a nutcase cop, a Black Muslim terrorist sympathizer, or a fed dutifully pulling a *Reichstag Fire* action to get the FedGov more antiterrorist powers and bigger budgets.

The first *missed shot* at the Michaels store could well have been deliberately missed, with his having already checked out a preferred location at another Michael's store from which he intended to make his real *money shot*. This could have been so he could make it appear to be a series of attacks on Michael's stores, sending police down blind alleys checking out recently discharged and disgruntled employees, or to get an incorrect description of his possible vehicle in circulation.
Indeed, he may well be waiting for the appearance of a white van or truck to appear before taking his shots, giving him a *fall guy* for any police in the area to be more interested in while he leaves appearing to be another panic-stricken motorist or bystander fleeing the scene.

Hobart Epps said he was shown a fuzzy picture (no mention of whather it was color or black-and-white) of someone who looked a little like him. The WP reporter (who did not see the picture) noted that Epps is about 5' 9', has sandy brown hair, and a mustache. From that, you (who are three steps removed) conclude the suspect "isn't particularly Middle Eastern looking."
I disagree. Based on this evidence there is noting about the suspect that suggests he is not "Middle Eastern looking."
The suspect may very well not be Middle Eastern, but this report does not cast doubt that theory.
I received my first anti-terrorist and counter-espionage intelligence formal training in the U.S. Army in 1966, and my most recent class in August of 1999...dealing with terrorist sniping incidents. And I am far from the most qualified at Free Republic, but am experienced and trained well enough to recognize a couple of others with more experience in their own specializations than I have.
So far as the methods and equipment of the expert rifleman and sniper go, I spent most of my first tour with 4/16 Infantry, First Infantry Division during 1968 as a *fill-in* sniper working base perimeter details, tunnel rat support and convoy escorts as a substitute for others temporarily or permanently out of commission or away at the 9th Infantry Division's sniper school at Bearcat. I've also performed that same function [or that of *designated rifleman*, prettnear the same thing] in two other conflicts and am preparing for a fourth.
Don't sell the experience or background of FReepers too short. There are some pretty incredible people here, and most of those without such backgrounds are quite willing to reconsider their previous theories and postulations based on the observations of those better knowledgable.
But I'm lacking in on-the-ground experience and familiarity with the operational area, and there are certainly other FReepers here much closer to the problem and more knowledgable of their home areas than I am. I want to see and hear what they have to say, and I expect pretty soon, some pieces will fall right into place.

I believe all the reports of white vehicles are the result of the police and media continuing to report same. At every scene potential witnesses are now looking for white vehicles, and OMG, there goes one now.
Let's sue for reparations....

That was Charlie Starkweather and girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate. Starkweather used both a rifle and, up close, a shotgun, and was a respectably good shot. And it was when he tried to use a handgun to intimidate a motorist, who turned out to be a deputy sheriff, that he was captured.
It's questionable whether Fugate personally pulled a trigger herself, but very possible- but she was also certainly both hostage and accomplice.
He was 19 years old at the time, 1958. She was 14.
