Washington sniper vanishes after signature hits
ABC NEWSONLINE ^ | 10/14/02

Posted on 10/13/2002 1:43:35 PM PDT by Tumbleweed_Connection

US police have said they do not want to the muddy waters of an investigation into a sniper who has killed eight people and wounded two by releasing an inaccurate sketch, amid reports the meticulous killer circling the nation's capital has been sighted.

Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose was asked to comment on reports that the sniper who has electrified the Washington area has been spotted, and police are working on a composite sketch.

Chief Moose, struggling for the right words, said he did not want to "muddy the waters" by releasing an image to the media too soon.

"Please rest assured that when we have something where we are sure that the media can help us we will use that," Moose said.

"The concern is that we pollute the whole thought process, we cause people to have tunnel vision, think they see what they heard on TV and mix that up with reality."

The power of the media has taken center stage in the hunt for the shooter - or shooters, who has used a high-velocity rifle to slam a single bullet into 10 victims since October 2, eluding the largest federal, state and local manhunt in the history of the Washington region.

Chief Moose released a composite image of an older model, mid-sized commercial truck, with light damage to its right rear bumper and black lettering -- a row of large black block letters above a row of smaller letters, on each side.

Chief Moose said the white truck, which has a roll-up door at the rear, was seen at more than one of the shootings by more than one witness and he asked the media to distribute it widely.

He declined to discuss any of the witnesses further.

"None of the witnesses have been able to give us the exact wording" on the truck or its license plate number, Chief Moose said at a news briefing.

The chief said the image is generating new leads.

"Maybe he has had this vehicle repaired," he said, calling on mechanics and body shop workers to think back.

Investigators are working on a sketch of a second vehicle, described as a white Chevrolet Astro van, seen near the latest shooting on Friday, Chief Moose said.

"We're working with a sense of urgency" to get that photo to the public, he said.

Physical evidence has been scant, with one taunting clue apparently left by the shooter near where a 13-year-old victim was shot - a tarot "death" card with the words "dear Mr Policeman, I am God" scrawled on the back.

The cold, methodical killer, who picks off random victims while concealed in a sniper's nest at a comfortable distance, claimed his 10th victim and eighth fatality on Friday.

Kenneth Bridges, 53, a businessman and father of six on the road from Philadelphia, was killed on Friday at an Exxon gasoline station near a busy interstate highway in Virginia.

This articles title and the body don't make sense. The articles body I heard just about verbatim on the news conference-Friday. It is really nothing new. So why do they lead on that the sniper 'vanished' how do they know this? Because there has been no hits on Sunday? They released a rough sketch of a white truck and then ABC confuses with this title. How confusing.....anything to make headlines I guess...

The second wave is upon us.

My fear is that this cell's sole function is to paralyze the Metro DC-area while a second cell prepares its attacks on the usual Washington targets.

I really fear the White House will be assaulted shortly (...and not by the Democrats).

BS. If they were "terrorists," they'd be going after rush-hour traffic at any of the many federal workplaces in that area - like that Paki illegal alien did several years ago in the parking area at CIA headquarters. Their skills would also be much better.

How skilled are Washington-area "snipers," anyway?

Bull!

They don't need to pull another 9/11 .....all the have to do is turn loose a 3 man sniper team in a major metro area....

Notice how people aren't going out in the DC area...afraid to even pump their own gas......imagine if this keeps up for say another 3 weeks.....they will wreck the local economy.

BTW .....wrecking the local economy is what this is all about.

I would believe that, however, a poster brought up a valid point against this being muslims:

On this thread (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/768449/posts), RedsHunter said:

The one thing in particular makes me think that it's not Al Qaeda terrorists are not doing the shooting ... the Tarot card supposedly left behind at one scene. Two things about it ... as I understand it, no self-respecting Mooselem would touch or look at, or even write upon, a graven image of God, let alone write on it in manner so to present himself as a God to others, even his infidel prey.

His point is credible. As I do not know the Koran well enough, I do not know if it would permit a muslim to go against is sacred teachings of doing such a thing with tarot cards.

These events are a practice "round" for picking off more "valuable" targets... like representatives and senators maybe. Whether or not it's terrorists is really irrelevant since the authorities will use the same investigative resources anyway.

If part of an al-Qaeda plan, Lord forbid, each takedown might be a signal that a particular aspect of further plans are in place and ready to launch.

Even though these attacks can't be defended effectively with your own firearms, it is still a good time to stress the merits of legal, individual gun ownership in one's community.

The guy may not have vanished, he may just not have access to the white truck on the weekends. Several freepers on other threads have suggested that the sniper strikes during the week when he's on the road for his job. They pointed out that he hasn't struck during a weekend, so that's what supports their assertion. Could be.

AQ's first post-9/11, post-anthrax attack was on a synagogue in Tunisia that killed 13 people. Not exactly the kind of high profile target you're talking about. The DC-area killings are getting more coverage than anything they've done in the past year (since the anthrax trial balloons). Coverage is what they crave.

Not every terror attack is going to be 9/11. Just look to Israel for proof of that. I believe they bombed an ice cream parlor, killing a single infant, just a few months ago.

To think that their playbook is limited exclusively to large scale attacks on highly recognizable targets is flat-out inaccurate.

I would agree except for one fact. A terrorist's goal is to "terrorize" large groups of people and these guys are terrorizing MORE by doing it this way, than if they were to just blow up a gas station/night club/etc.

Do you remember about 6 months, a sniper in Palestine who shot 6 or 7 Israeli soldiers and then, coolly, disappeared without a trace? This could be the same guy, slipped in accross the Mexican border and driven to DC where he met up with a group that was supposed to fly the 5th, 6th or 12th plane last year. The local team has been driving the route for months and has laid out target points, escape routes and timed traffic, lights, and deliveries. They acquired the weapons, propably in a neighboring state, and had them sent in, probably, by USPS.

The shooter is a trained military guy, maybe SAS or IRA, and will slip across the Canadian border and fly back to Europe from Toronto or Montreal.

The local team is expendable but has had almost two years to build escape routes and position cash and resources. My bet is that the truck is in a warehouse or garage in such a fahion that it won't draw attention for a least 5 or 10 days. The local team will easily move across both borders and be home in the Becca Valley or Saudi Arabia by next Monday. There are, of course, other teams in place trained and ready to use the weapons and material that comes so easily across the Mexican border.

I'm sure a target within the Capitol has passed all our minds. I'm going to add to that the recent story of the riddle...the guy who was discussing the sticks etc.. We may be looking back at 9-11 because of the speakers inference (which is what I was doing until now)...rather than looking at it as something to come.

He described a cake with a stick hanging down and when I look at a bird's eye view of the Capitol building with it's long Mall, it's exactly what I see. The two sticks he mentions earlier may be Oct. 2nd..

Well, he knows what we would set up OUTSIDE of the Capitol loop and would likely be casing the inside of the Capitol loop on foot.

Heard there's a big food festival this weekend and saw people all over the place.

He must fit right in so I'd guess a johnny jihad "cleaned up" type....there's only thousands of those.

The question is: What's the end game??

I do think he plans to die.

and so he vanishes to a new locale with a new vehicle, because he knows they have a few coarse grained pictures and a picture or two of his isuzu...

where will this whack a mole islamakazi pop up next...

We need a nationwide manhunt.
We need to start by intercepting the cell phone and private calls of all islamists in this country.

I believe THEY know where he is headed. I suspect they KNOW who he is too.

We need to watch for wire transfers of money by islamics as well... and we need to seize their "mullah's" checking accounts... personal and mosques... and squeeze the bejeebers out of them, until the buggers eyes bleed.

We will end up having to put an end to the islamist death cult...

religions that preach that the slaugher of innocents, gains entrance to heaven, are murder/death cultists... and as such have NO PROTECTION WHATSOEVER under the first amendment... it's NOT a religion in THIS country, if it preaches KILLING innocents in the name of religious freedom.

repeat after me "Islamic death cults have NO first amendment rights..."

I'm leaning towards terrorist cell.

These guys are sending a message that absolutely no-one is safe anywhere.

They'll kill you when you're washing the car, pumping gas, mowing the lawn, waiting for the bus, going to school, shopping at Michael's, absolutely anywhere. They're trying to be totally unpredictable.

You can't protect yourself by not flying, staying out of federal buildings, nightclubs, etc.. There's nothing you can do. Any moment anywhere you may be shot to death.

That's the definition of terror.

"I am convinced we are witnessing a terror cell operating here...."

I tend to agree with you for these reasons:

1) D.C. is probably at the top of the Al Qaeda target list.

2) 18 urban areas have a population greater than D.C. What are the odds that a domestic crazy would pop up in D.C. instead of one of the other areas with a greater population density? 1 in 19?

3) The Tarot Card Killer has absolutely no conscience and is able to select his target, shoot and cooly make his escape. It's difficult to imagine that even the worst of our domestic serial killers could do that ten times in a row.

I remember that. Do you also remember when the Palestinian sniper shot a baby in the head... or when the sniper shot the pregnant Israeli woman and her child in the car? It's the same type of killer that shot down the school boy. Palestinians, Al Qeada, Abu Sayef -- It doesn't matter which group -- they are all trained out of the same hate-filled, cold-blooded playbook. Come to think of it, why doesn't some expert come up with a profile of an Islamic terrorist for us.

Terrorists, or their hired guns, are in the business of terrorizing. They, like the anthrax mailers, have accomplished that mission.
