Explosive 'could have come from Indon military'
The explosive used in the Bali bombing could have come from the Indonesian military, a leading defence expert said today.
Australian Defence Association executive director Michael O'Connor said there were factions within the Indonesian army which could have supplied the explosive C4 to terrorist groups.
Indonesia's intelligence chief Hedropriyono said today C4 had been used in one of the bombs used in the Bali attack. "Yes, one of them (bombs) is of C4," he told AFP during a visit to a local hospital. "That information has not been released formally," he added.
Mr O'Connor said C4 was a stable and easily transportable explosive that was extremely powerful.
He said it was unlikely to have been used by poorly organised groups.
Mr O'Connor said the Laskar Jihad group was in a position to get C4 from elements within the Indonesian army.
"There are elements in the army who would have access to C4 and would be prepared to supply it to an organisation like Laskar Jihad," he told AAP.
"It's pretty clear that the Indonesian military would have access to C4.
"There are factions in the army that support Laskar Jihad's plans to turn Indonesia into a strict Muslim state."
Mr O'Connor said the use of C4 meant the attack could also have been carried out by al-Qaeda supporters.
He said the attack may have been an attempt to both directly attack Westerners, target the Hindu population of Bali and also to bring down the Indonesian government.
"This could very well have been a three for the price of one attack," he said.

True, but there might be some positive unintended consequences. One of the bigget problems in our current war is that we don't have a 'traditional' opponent, a nation's military. As a result, we have many people who are adamantly against war because of the difficulty of sorting civilians from guerilla combatants, as in VietNam. (Of course, many of THAT group oppose war as a matter of course, but the have many of the soccer moms on thier side right now.) If we now have a clear and legitimate military opponent, this desperately needed war can finally get kicked into high gear.

Why sould this situation give us a clear military opponent? By that logic, we should have attacked ourselves after the Murrah bombing since it was a former Army Ranger who allegedly committed the act.
