Here is the best place I have ever seen for "modern" computer graphic art. Check out the PhotoShop Pong contests. It is amazing what some of these people can do.

As an art student I watched some of my fellow students struggle with drawing. Some of those who never were able to master it, became abstract painters.

How right you are! I am NOT an artist, but I have often found it useful to be able to sketch things (to note a particular point of conformation on a horse, or capture the appearance of a dress I see for sewing later, or record a detail on antique furniture, for example). I could always "see" in my mind what I wanted, but I couldn't set it down on paper accurately. I got hold of a book called "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" that addressed the problem in a very practical way. After completing the exercises in that book, I can capture what I need for my purposes ... it ain't art, but at least I know it! ;-)

One thing to "break the rules" after mastering them, another to pretend one doesn't care...
