Police Chaplain's Stand on Homosexuality Jeopardizes His Job
Agape Press ^ | October 21, 2002 | Allie Martin

A Michigan city is facing a possible lawsuit if a volunteer chaplain -- who believes homosexuality is a sin -- is removed from his duties.

Last Monday night during its regular meeting, several members of the Ferndale City Council said they supported removing Pastor Tom Hansen as the city's volunteer police chaplain. Hansen was blasted at the meeting by members of the homosexual activist group Soulforce for having publicly expressed his religious view on homosexuality.

According to the Daily Tribune in Oakland County, Michigan, Hansen -- pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church -- stated his belief that the homosexual lifestyle is in direct opposition to the expressed word of God and that God views it as a sin. Soulforce complained to the Council that Hansen's views represent "spiritual violence" against those who are homosexual, bisexual, and transgendered. Apparently the Council is now divided over whether it should have Hansen relieved of his duties.

But a Michigan pro-family leader is encouraging the Council members to think twice before firing Hansen. Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, says a decision by the council to remove Hansen could be a costly one.

"If they, in fact, take action to try and discriminate against and fire Pastor Hansen from this volunteer position, they will be facing a civil rights lawsuit alleging what is clearly a black-and-white case of content or viewpoint discrimination," Glenn says.

Glenn explains that Hansen's role as chaplain does not mean he forfeits his constitutional rights. "I can't help but marvel at the reported site Monday night when the so-called 'tolerance' and 'non-discrimination' crowds so clearly demonstrated their intolerance for Pastor Hansen's sincerely held religious views, and demanded that he be discriminated against and fired for daring to publicly express those views," Glenn says.

The Council is scheduled to debate the issue during its next regular meeting on October 28.

These people have to be stopped. Anyone, still laboring under the delusion that homosexuals just want to get along, needs to wise up.

As a surgeon assaults the body with careful, controlled violence to save a life, the Word of God cleaves clean and clear to the marrow, a sharp two-edged sword, to save the soul from destruction.

Bible Quotes

"While the people of Israel were in the wilderness,
they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day...
And the Lord said to Moses, 'The man shall be put to death;
all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.'
And all the congregation brought him outside the camp,
and stoned him to death with stones,
as the Lord commanded Moses."
..........Numbers 15:32

It's a shame. What's this country coming to? So, they want a Chaplain who shouldn't follow the Bible and God's word.

Thank you for the apology. Unfortunately, I clicked the Read-a-Confession thingy and was for a moment quite shocked. Seriously, I froze while reading the first few because I wasn't prepared for it. May God have mercy on those involved at that website. God will not be mocked.

It is the duty of the clergy to minister to sinners. And we are all sinners. To remove the Chaplain simply because he recognizes homosexuality to be a sin, is to miss the whole mission of the clergy. It is not to damn, but to redeem.

This chaplain is doing exactly what he should be doing by all accounts. He recognizes homosexuality for what it is, and continues to minister as he should.

Sounds to me as if that community has far more to fear from the rabid homosexual lobby and the misdirected city council than they do from the chaplain.

You think they'd allow this for any other religion?

And a very dangerously misleading statement, if your intended end is Heaven. What saves the soul from destruction is trusting in Jesus Christ for your eternal life. Nothing less, nothing more. Not the following of this or that doctrine (however true) extraneously to same. Someone who thinks he will go to Heaven as a result of obeying "enough" Biblical teachings (and nobody obeys them all) will be, to put it mildly, disappointed.

Homosexual conduct is wrong, wrong, wrong, but it has no advantage over any other sin in respect to the power to send to hell.

Wonder what would happen if the pastor suddently converted to Islam? Then they couldn't fire him because to do so would be religious discrimination!
