Posted on 10/24/2002 9:03:42 AM PDT by cody32127
Hours after news broke of arrests in the sniper case, New York Newsday hit newsstands with a column blaming President Bush for not doing enough to catch D.C.'s serial killer.
Headlined "Bush Should Take a Walk Near Home" and prominently placed on page 3, columnist Jimmy Breslin's piece excoriated Bush for campaigning for Republicans across the country instead of staying at home while his city was under siege - and even suggested that the president was a coward for leaving town.
"Bush should have been taking a walk through Silver Spring or Rockville," complained the writer who came to prominence during New York's notorious Son-of-Sam serial murder case.
"That was his job. He pledged to defend the nation. He could have started by helping to repel the attack on Washington.
"It was one thing that Bush was completely disdainful of the World Trade Center," the columnist bellyached. "He and his people hate New York. He barely showed for a year. And they blew the attack. They blew it because any threats to New York weren't of such vital interest."
Breslin then claimed that the reason Bush allegedly doesn't like New York is because he's a bigot.
"New York is filled with blacks and Jews and all kinds of Hispanics and Asians who don't vote right," he wrote. "We don't bother with them during an election, then why stop everything and concentrate on some threat to the place?"
The incendiary writer then said Bush feels the same way about the D.C. area, arguing, "nobody in the shooting area, in Montgomery County towns, voted for him."
Breslin compared Bush unfavorably to President Lyndon Johnson, who he claimed had defied a Secret Service warning about threats to his safety to march behind slain President John F. Kennedy's casket.
"I'd rather be shot than let anybody think I'm afraid to go out on that street," Johnson said, according to the writer. Breslin then concluded, "Somebody should have shown George Bush the words."
The ill-timed column appeared in millions of copies of Newsday distributed throughout New York City and Long Island, but had vanished for about an hour from the paper's Web site Thursday morning. By 10:30 a.m., however, it had reappeared online.
That he's a fool. Not only saying it, he's proving it as well.

New York -- Despite concerns for his safety at the unstable wreckage, President George W. Bush visited the still smoldering site of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center September 14 to bring a message of solidarity and courage to the rescuers and families of the victims.
Not to mention:
NEW YORK US President George W. Bush tossed the ceremonial opening pitch for game three of the 97th World Series to a standing ovation here Tuesday at famed Yankee Stadium. Wearing a jacket with the logo of the New York Fire Department, Bush walked to the pitcher's mound to cheers from spectators in a city still dealing with the September 11 terrorism tragedy at the World Trade Center.
President Bush unveiled a new initiative Tuesday [Oct 31, 2001] at Thomas S. Wootton High School to pair the nation's veterans with individual schools.
"You need to listen to what they have to say," Bush said during an assembly at the Rockville school. "America should always honor our veterans; at this moment, especially."
In making his announcement, Bush, speaking before students, staff and an assemblage of local, state and national dignitaries including Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jerry D. Weast, U.S. Rep. Constance A. Morella (R-Dist. 8) of Bethesda, former U.S. Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) -- himself a wounded World War ll veteran -- said he was asking Americans to extend traditional Veterans' Day observances on Nov. 11 from one day to one week.
The President's new initiative came amid reports of heightened possibilities of new terrorist attacks in the United States and that U.S. troops are on the ground in Afghanistan. Despite the heightened anxiety, the atmosphere at Wootton was one of excitement as the school prepared for the President's arrival
President George W. Bush visited Dixie Printing Company in Glen Burnie, Md., on Oct. 24 to underscore both the importance small businesses play in strengthening the U.S. economy, and the role of a stronger economy in the war against terrorism.
Gore - 232,453
Bush - 124,580
I beg to differ....
I think his point was to answer the charge that Bush pays no mind or spends no time in this area because it voted for Gore.
The "He's afraid of the sniper" charge is too silly to merit responding to IMHO.
