MOVES by Brussels to sideline Nato and create a powerful Euro army were blasted last night.
EU commissioner Michel Barnier wants to torpedo defence links with America.
He proposes a European version of Natos Article 5 allowing countries under attack to call on other member states armed forces. Mr Barnier hailed it as a new defence initiative to unite Europe.
But since European governments tend to spend so little on defence, it would result in an army of 3 Boy Scouts armed with a slingshot, even if they were carrying the Euro flag. - Ivan
He said: The hour of truth is coming for Europe. Do we want to be only an economic and financial community, or do we want to become an independent political power?
His plans were slammed by Sir Emyr Jones Parry, Britains ambassador to Nato, who said it would be ghastly for the US and damaging for Nato.
And Conservative Euro MP Edward McMillan-Scott said: It is exchanging Nato for Wimpo.
Defence is a low priority for the continentals and their approach to world problems is to lie low and hope they go away.
He added: The idea of Europe being defended by Spains single light aircraft carrier Prince of Asturias is ludicrous, but it makes the point.
Shadow Defence Secretary Bernard Jenkin warned: It is bad for the US, bad for Britain and bad for Europe. It will blow Nato apart.
Tony Blair supports a Euro army for peacekeeping duties but has reassured the US it will not replace Nato.
A No10 spokesman said: The PM has made clear we believe in greater co-operation in Europe that is working with Nato not against it.
Mr Barniers proposed defence pact would be voluntary so neutral countries like Ireland and Finland can opt out.
A draft blueprint for the new-look Europe will be unveiled today and is likely to propose the EU be renamed United Europe.

The EU continues to be notable, not for its intelligence, dynamism or effectiveness, but rather for its utter stupidity.

For our own selfish reasons, I'd love to see the U.S. end its military presence in Germany (bring our boys home to spend their money over here, for instance).
Besides, it would be interesting to see how much influence Russia gained over Germany and France if the U.S. military wasn't on the European continent.

Maybe Herr Blowhard Schroeder could greet the Russian troops as they roll in!

It is bad for the US, bad for Britain and bad for Europe. It will blow Nato apart. And exactly how is that bad for the US?

Isnt it amazing how these Liberal politicians can make sounds of strength and unity, but when it comes to funding a military that can fulfill these words other things like social programs take priority.
Empty promises for empty headed socialist voters so they can have nationalist (continentalist?) pride while they wait months for life saving surgery rationed by their nationalized health care system.

Speaking of Aircraft carriers, isn't HMG working on plans for a Nimitz Class carrier to succeed the old
Ark Royal?

I've been thinking for some time that the NATO relationship needs to be reevaluated and possibly trashed. Countries that decline to defend themselves should not be able to have us bound by treaty to defend them if attacked.
Not that we wouldn't defend them necessarily, but it bugs me that we are bound to consider an attack on France, for example, to be an attack on us.

MOVES by Brussels to sideline Nato and create a powerful Euro army were blasted last night. Isn't this hinted at in Revalations as one of the precursors to Armageddon?
With events shaping up in the Mideast, and the coming disaster on the Temple Mount, we may be closer than we think.

The UK Future Aircraft Carrier, CVF, requirement is for two 50,000t carriers which will enter service in the years 2012 and 2015. Each carrier will be capable of embarking an air group of 40 aircraft. The carriers will be twice the size of the Invincible class and accommodate twice as many aircraft. The crew will be about 700, only 15 more than the Invincible, indicating the high level of automation being integrated into the ship's systems.
