On KSTP am1500 Gov Ventura is discussing last nights debacle and his plans to fill the senator seat for the remainder of Wellstones term.
He says, "Why place a career politician in there...why not put a regular citizen like him (before becoming Gov) in the congress."

Can he find Algore's "Can Lady" and appoint her?
To: wallcrawlr
One question - Who will that "regular citizen" vote to caucus with during the lame duck session?

As a Ventura appointee, it is likely they would be an "independent" with no love for either party. You might as well flip a coin. With every new development, the Senate Majority just gets murkier and murkier, even during the "lame duck" session! Races in MO and AK and appointments in NJ and MN all are contributing, and you KNOW that the lawsuits surrounding November 5 will be voluminous. We may break AlGore's Election 2000 record for uncertainty in a major branch of the federal government! (What was it again, 47 days?)

Please tell us more of what he said about last night's abomination. I'll second that request!

He said that before Kahn got up to speak that he was going to have to eat his words to his wife that this would be "political" but after that was disgusted at the direction the "memorial" took.
It was during that speech that his wife looked at him and basically said "ready to go when you are." Got up immediately and left.
What more can you say.

Jesse - Appoint some hardass like G Gordon Liddy. Yeah! Or maybe Colonel Hackworth.
To: TomB
My notes from his radio interview:
Ventura discussed last night and his role as Gov to fill the senate seat
His wife was visibly upset and was crying over the fact that the dems were disrespectfully treating the other people who died.
He showed up last night out of respect for Paul being our Senator and he is Gov, nothing more
Called Paul a socialist
Reiterated the fact that he respected Paul for his devotion to veterans
Thought the behavior of Kahn was pathetic
Lambasting all political parties calling them both corrupt and taking bribes
Says independents are virtuous for not running negative ads
To: Teacher317
You are correct! The Dems will grab this person and corrupt them faster then it took them to show their Phoney affection for Mr. Wellstone.
Shame on the siblings who fell into the trap. Shame on all those the participated. It was true Vomit to watch.

Tim Penny is a democrat... Don't let his "change" fool you...
My vote would be State Senator Bob Lessard (I) Int. Falls.

The only way Ventura will appoint anyone is if certification is held up in court. Even then, the appointment will last only until certification is eventually done.

From what I remember, he would be very unlikely to put up with any manure. He would be direct for his two months. He could be counted on to tell welstones remaining staff to shut their socialist mouths up.
To: mlo
I agree with someone on the other thread that stated the mayor needs to bring out his old ads stating he was once a democrat......now republican...thinks independantly!
To: coder2
Tim Penny is running for Governor this year, on the Independent ticket. He's a fiscal conservative, IMO.

"Why place a career politician in there...why not put a regular citizen like him (before becoming Gov) in the congress."
Because it is really stupid. The incoming freshman senators will be given a seniority rank according to the population rank of the state the senator represents. In 2001 the highest ranking freshman senator was Hillary Clinton from New York. Minnesota is further down in the list. If Jesse nominates the winner of election to the senate seat, the new senator from Minnesota would have higher seniorty than all the other freshman senators elected this year except for Jim Talent from Missouri. Of course if Mondale is elected, it really wouldn't matter much because he had about the same seniority Wellstone had when he died.

If Jesse nominates the winner of election to the senate seat... Once a winner is certified he will automatically fill the rest of the current term. Jesse has no say in it.

It's a dumb idea. He needs to appoint the winner of the election so that he gets a leg up on seniority. That's the responsible thing to do.
Nonetheless, it's still good that he was so disgusted.
To: mlo
Once a winner is certified he will automatically fill the rest of the current term. Jesse has no say in it. It depends on state law. Apparently the winner of the election does not automatically get to serve out the remainder of Wellstone's term. The reason Talent in Missouri could immediately take his seat is that he would be serving a term that started on January 3, 2001. The state law in Missouri specifically allows the winner of a special election to take office immediately.
To: Paleo Conservative
It depends on state law. Apparently the winner of the election does not automatically get to serve out the remainder of Wellstone's term. I'm not assuming, that is MN state law. The winner of the Nov. 5 election will fill out the remainder of Wellstone's term.

That man was a national hero, Admiral James Bond Stockdale, USN Retired. He spent several years in a North Vietnamese POW camp. Read his book, "Love and War". You will see what American heros are made of and how much they can endure in the fight for liberty for the people of the world.

I accept your opinion that Penny is no conservative. Am I wrong to categorize him as a Conservative Democrat? That close to being a Liberal Republican...he he. From my viewpoint he struck me as rather conservative, from a fiscal standpoint.
Now please share your definition of conservative. My definition is more fiscal, judicial voting record, and does not include the "social" definition of "conservative." That's in another category, IMO, called Right Wing Republican.

Actually Penny has done so much flip-flopping on almost every issue, it is so hard to characterize him now.
I wish I could clarify this better, but I can only work with what Penny has been saying and it changes

If your correct about Penny talking as you mentioned, then I'm with you. He's a lefty and an opportunist. I'm very disappointed... from my image of him in the House.
Thanks...but you certainly know better.

Hey, all you morning drivers out there. We're here with Jesse "The Body" or Jesse "The Mind" Ventura on the best darn radio station in Minnesota, AM 1500, KSTP.
This morning we're giving away a temporary independent appointment to the U.S. Senate. Just be the 74th caller, and you'll be sworn in right here on the air. And you'll also get a KSTP hat, T-shirt and bumper sticker.
To: wallcrawlr
The more I think of that travesty of a memorial service for Wellstone, I keep remembering that episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show (set in Minnesota) when nearly all of the characters can't stop laughing because the TV station's morning clown had dressed up like a peanut for a parade and was crushed to death by a hungry elephant.
Mary Richards is outraged at the morbid humor in the newsroom, but then she's the only one who ends up getting the giggles at the funeral.
In an on-air obituary, the Dan Rather-type incompetent newscaster Ted Baxter remembers the clown by reciting his signature phrase, "A little song, a little dance; a little seltzer down your pants."

Unfortunately, this REWARDS DEMOCRATS, as always, for their lying cheating ways.
The Reformies/Indies/Libertarians' hatred of the GOP blinds them to the need for the clearest kind of reform, which is that you punish the damn Dems by appointing a REPUBLICAN when this happens. It is no punishment at all to the Dems to appoint a "citizen off the street" if this moron goes to Washington and doesn't caucus with anyone and doesn't throw "Puff" Daschle out. That REWARDS the Dems.
This is the "Perot" syndrome: indies/reformies/Libs would rather pretend that they are taking a principled stand than actually act in such a way as to punish the violators of the laws.

Re: Buchanan
I don't think Jesse likes his type. Too much of a Republican caricature.
It will be some Libertarian. And it's only for about a week, until the election results are certified...
Whoa, just thought of something. These election results may not be certified for quite a while, if Mondull loses. It will be stuck in court for over a month.
