Election 2002: FBI looks into misleading voter calls

Thursday, October 31, 2002

Associated Press

ORLANDO - An FBI agent has interviewed Florida Democratic chairman Bob Poe about a phone call he received urging him to cast his absentee ballot days after the Nov. 5 election.

Poe said Wednesday that an agent from the FBI's Orlando office interviewed him by phone for about 15 minutes on Tuesday about the call he received late last week from a man purporting to be with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill McBride's campaign.

Unaware of Poe's position, the man asked the state Democratic chairman to cast his absentee ballot Nov. 10 - five days after Election Day, Poe said.

FBI spokesman Sara Oates in Tampa said Wednesday she couldn't confirm that an investigation into the call has been initiated. The FBI generally does not discuss ongoing investigations.

Poe said Wednesday that he was under the impression that there was an investigation.

"The Justice Department, through the FBI, is looking into it," Poe said. "My understanding is that they're cooperating with ... other law enforcement agencies to get to the bottom of this."

U.S. Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the ranking Democratic member of the Judiciary Committee, wrote U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft on Tuesday asking for an investigation.

Poe had written Ashcroft over the weekend also asking him to investigate.

Both the Republican Party of Florida and the campaign of Republican Gov. Jeb Bush have denied involvement and support an investigation.

That's our Florida press. Now you know why a one issue (and a fiscally irresponsible "class-size" issue, at that) Bill McBride's ever been close to our good Gov. Jeb Bush in the polls - yellow (dishonorable) journalism (and Dem. cheating and lying, of course).

I think the long-shot lawsuit tactics will backfire in the long-term for the Dummy-crats. If they're the ones who are tieing up all the tightly-contested elections by lawsuits, then it's going to eventually become apparent that this kind of behavior is just part and parcel of how they "campaign". The patience of the American populace will run out and the average voter will become disgusted over this.

"We don't have any election laws. /sarcasm"

Certainly not in the democratic-run counties of Florida.

Gov. Ventura could bring the democrat scams to a screaming halt by appointing a Republican to serve out Wellstone's term! The democrats would cease and desist their delay/lawsuit/law twisting efforts because such tactics would only extend the Republican majority of this Congress that much longer. HEY JESSE, slam the despotic democrats to the canvas!

Wanna bet Poe is making the whole thing up?

No bet! The article is very bizarre. Was Poe guessing (correctly, imho) that AG Ashcroft would supboena phone records if massive fraud occurs next Tues., and was CYA-ing? Or did he know that the AP reporter would write the story in just this misleading way, with Poe appearing to be the victim, ending with Jeb's "denial" and appearance of blame. It's standard AP MO in Fla. to end political news (even when it's anti-McBride as in the FEA-McBride illegal campaign ads) with a negative comment about Jeb Bush. Swamp Clymers.

More than actually submitting votes late, the Dems are planting the seads for an election challenge after the fact.

How hard can this be to verify? Who doesn't have caller-ID...especially with this guy's connections? If he will simply provide the date and time of the call, investigators should be able to track down the number of the caller.

Investigators are standing by...

This is what they are doing (The Democrats)Poe, from the DNC "says" he got a call from someone claiming to be with the Mcbride campain asking poe to hold off on sending his ballot in untill after the vote.

The implication is to be that the Republicans made the calls to "Disenfranchise" mcbride voters.

1st step in lawsuits-media push-stolen election fiasco to come AGAIN.

Mark my words!

Why does everyone assume that something like this would be done by a Pubby? It could just as easily have been done by a Rat, given its Publik Educayshun.

Thanks for the links, backhoe.

AG Ashcroft's not messing around. Perhaps even Poe now knows he's serious. Justice cracks down on voter fraud

Next to learn that this administration means what it says: Saddam Hussein? (^:

I agree wholeheartedly, but the dim's (especially under the clintoon/McCaulliffe influence) just don't see things that way. See, they are just trying to save us from ourselves. Us mere citizens don't have the intelligence to vote properly in elections, so they feel it is their duty to 'correct' it, and whether it be by using dead people to vote, or lawers to hold the elections hostage, it's all just a part of their game plan. And they could care less what the citizens think about it. They have their plans for holding onto power, and could care less what the average joe thinks about their tactics. I guess they figure that with their core democRAT voting block, combined with their election fraudsters, it doesn't really matter what you and I or anyone else thinks.

Oh, THAT'S about as subtle as the Wellstone Memorial Service/Mondale pre-Campaign Rally.

A "Republican" calling people for a Democrat vote? Does anyone else see anything wrong with this picture?
I sure hope the FBI is investigating the Dem vote here. It sounds like a set up if anything. Politics of personal destruction the Dems are so noted for.

Democrats will do anything (lie, cheat, steal, sell out their grandmothers, etc) to get elected. The only thing that matters to them is power.

I believe the FBI agent received the call. Seeing probable election fraud he investigated by calling Poe to ask a few questions.
