Campaigns only go negative if they need to reduce the other sides turn our. Negative ads are designed to reduce support for the other guy. Mondale is not trying to increase his vote, he is trying to reduce Colemans vote.

Trying to reduce Colemans vote is a heck of a gamble. Republicans are mad. Mondale attacking him is an indication that mondale has a problem. Too many Coleman voters and not enough mondale voters and no voters left to get.

Bet the farm that the Democrats have been doing tracking polls since last saturday. If they looked good for Mondale every media outlet in the nation would have them.

There is nothing that the Modale campaign would like more than a million stories that the Wellstone family memorial had not rubbed off and hurt mondale. If it had not hurt Mondale at the polls we would know it loud and clear. If we are not hearing what the polls say in this vital race, then the polls do not favor Mondale.

As far as Coleman is concerned the more Repubicans think it will take every single voter voting to win, the better. The last thing Coleman wants is publicity that says he is winning. He wants turn out.

At this stage it is Mondale that needs the momentum not Coleman.

Great points, and a cogent analysis...thanks...BTW..everyone is assuming that all of Wellstone's supporters will be determined Mondale voters...may not be the case....MOndale won't get all of Wellstone's voters, and just a 1-2% drop off will put Coleman over the top....
