I didn't know a 45% approval rating spelled disaster, unless he would have to face a runoff if not 50% or more.

There is no runoff after the general election here in CA. Plurality wins. Gray Davis is so unpopular, many Democrats say they're undecided, are looking at 3rd party candidates, or just plan to be apathetic (stay home). That's why polls show Green party candidate Peter Camejo at 4-8%, which is pretty high for a 3rd party.

Davis has a disapproval rating above 55%, so the election appears really tight. If people knew more about his ethics problems, his disapproval would be even higher. My mind is already shutting out the most recent investigations regarding Sawyer, McFall, and Dunn, and of their connections to Davis, so I can imagine that most Californians will ignore that type of news, too, and his ratings won't change in the next two days.

The only poll that counts is the one on November 5th. Go Simon!
