Two programs for you.
1. Yes you need Ad-Ware as most here have suggested.
2. ADSUBTRACT (www.adsubtract.com) is the VERY BEST Program to run at all times while you surf the net. Get the pro version (one fee last a lifetime, no yearly fees afterwards). Adsubtract stops ton of stuff like Advertisment, Pop-ups, background music, background images, cookies, java this and that, autorefreshes, much more stuff you just hate. The nice thing is if you want them on a site, fine, just a clik of a button will let those things load, it is very cofigurable and very stable (will not crash your system). I absolutely love it.

I get a lot of these "messenger" ads/notices that look like official messages or emails. Can I turn this off?No. Those ARE official messages or emails...

I don't get popups but I did click on a caption this picture thread that was Gay Porn in close up mode. Needless to say the thread didn't last long.

Those ARE official messages or emailsI've always found "official" messages and e-mails to be a turn-off.

I've never seen any porno ads on "Free Republic", but I had a funny thing happen once when I did a search on conservative sites around the world. While I was looking through some of them, a porno pop-up ad page 'popped' up! I couldn't imagine how or why that happened, but it seemed strange that it would pop up on a page with conservative subject matter. I'ts almost like someone was playing a joke on me, or trying to lure me away to look at that stupid page!

You beat me to it: I've been using Ad Subtract for a few years, and it's great. They offer a 30-day free trial at AdSubtract.com, BTW. (I just downloaded it on a friend's computer).
I also just checked the stats that Adsubtract keeps, em2vn, and out of 50,000+ ads/pop-ups/spyware blocked since I last cleared the stats, not one originated at Free Republic -- so it's a safe bet you didn't pick up the spyware here.

You can get PopUp Stopper for free
from this website. It will stop ALL popups when you are browsing. It'll even stopp you from opening a second IE browser...unless you press the control key while clicking. Then it will allow it. Nifty and free.
