"...The 1930’s saw President Franklin D. Roosevelt redefine freedom with his  “Four Freedoms” speech.

Since then, people expect to have not only freedom of speech and religion, but also freedom from fear and from want, all provided by the government, of course, and paid for with other peoples’ money..."

"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries."
- Sir Winston Churchill

Thank you. I'm saving this quote for future reference.

"...As early as the 1830’s, ... Equality of condition, of position, of peace and comfort became more important than freedom ..."

"...The weeds of democracy had started springing up in the fields of freedom..."

"...Constitutional architect James Madison had written,

“With respect to the words general welfare…

To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators.”

But the Court routinely uses the welfare clause without regard to original intent.

As early as the 1830’s...
Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain in Texas...Goodbye Republic
I didn't want to believe that as far back as January 26, 1839, there seems to have been an effort to bring democracy into the mainstream.

You don't know of the "collaborator"?
The term "quisling" is used to refer to a collaborator (not necessarily of the same "brand/type" as ol' Vidkun was though).
In other words...You're quisling on "the definition" of "democracy" and "republic" so you seem to be a "Democracy" collaborator.

Not at all. It seems to be a distinction without a difference. Democracy now-a-days means any system of government where the people, through a process of secret ballot, chooses its leaders. Democracy is not a dirty word, and if we come out claiming that it is, we look like absolute kooks.

I've just downloaded, reformatted somewhat, and made several copies to distribute to my homeschool group. This is excellent material for young developing high school minds--a succinct, highly readable essay!!

"If we incline too much to democracy, we shall soon shoot into a monarchy, or some other form of dictatorship.'"

We are subjected to a dictatorship. It just has two names. It dictates everything that I can do. Too bad no one cares.

Maybe you need to look into "original intent" too.
I entirely concur in the propriety of resorting to the sense in which the Constitution was accepted and ratified by the nation. In that sense alone it is the legitimate Constitution. What a metamorphosis would be produced in the code of law if all its ancient phraseology were to be taken in the modern sense.4
4 James Madison, Letter to Henry Lee, on June 25, 1824. Madison is considered the "father of the Constitution" by many Constitutional scholars.

Republic? Democracy? I think 'oligarchy' is a more apt description of what our government has become in last 40 years.

Madison is considered the "father of the Constitution" by many Constitutional scholars.
Further study will show that Goevenuer Morris was considered by Madison as the true "father of the Constitution" as he actually penned the final version.
Gouverneur Morris of New York is largely credited withe the style of the constitution, and in fact he wrote the final version.

It would be a little more accurate if the title were:

"We were not a Democracy!"

The stressing of a government founded on the Judao-Christian principles was the intended antidote to this. That is another reason the Democrat/Communists fight any reference by government to religion.

----------------------------

The foundation of a sane constitutional republic rests ultimately upon morality and a sense of responsibility. When those are lost, a moral constitution becomes an impediment to corruption and is slowly eroded. Everything is lost. Whether that morality and sense of responsibility come from religion or force of pure intellect matters not. They are necessary.
