The word "centrist" is being thrown around a lot in the media lately. Its a word that the Democrats will use extensively in the next two years and It could help them win the 2004 elections.
Democrats have been perceived as left on the political spectrum, Republicans right. The media and the Democrats are in the process of redefining the spectrum. Nancy Pelisse (D) will be described as a liberal, on the left or a "San Francisco Democrat" (whatever that means) and previous Democrats described as on the left or progressive will now be called "centrist."
The press has always hesitated to call Democrats liberals or on the left, but have never shrunk from labeling Republicans conservative or far right.
The description of Democrats as being progressive has never resonated with swing or casual voters, but in 2004 look for the term centrist to be used by Democrats to put a new face on an old canard.
