Chachi Novellas,

My role as the president of FIU obliges me to protect and defend the right of faculty who have invited these emissaries from Cuba to speak on our campus. Our faculty at FIU have autonomy through academic freedom, to invite whomever they see fit, even when the President and the administration of the university are not in agreement with the ideas the guests may espouse. I call upon all in the community to understand and respect the liberties that this country offers to us.

RE: Civilized Murderers...
Surely a highly educated and highly cultured society would also have a high level of ethics...

Dear Dr. Maidique:

Thank you for your reply. I have read both your explanations in English and Spanish as to why you allowed assassin Victor Dreke to hold a conference at your campus, and I find both unacceptable.

I also, watched your televised interview... You stated that many speakers have held conferences and badmouthed Jews. Also, that you had no choice because you were the first Hispanic in your position and how would it look if you do otherwise.

How can you place the fear of loosing your job and role as President in front of ethics and principles?

It was never a matter of different or opposing ideas; we respect and defend the rights of others to disagree. We are law-abiding citizens that fled oppression and came to United States, our home, in search of liberty, justice and the rights that were denied to us by a totalitarian regime. Many were not so lucky and were taken to the firing squads by your guest for simple dissent.

It was always about the kind of individual that you allowed in your campus, where many of your students have family members or friends that were murdered at the hands of this hyena. This individual in not an "academic intellectual", but a common criminal.

You indicate that the FIU faculty has autonomy through academic freedom. What exactly does that mean? Are the campus doors open to all thugs?

* If members of your faculty have a bond with radical Muslims and invite a Taliban or Bin Laden personality, are they also welcomed?
* If your faculty does not like blacks and invites representatives of the KKK, that have abused and murdered American blacks, are they also welcomed?
* If your faculty does not like Jews and invites a personality as the infamous Dr. Joseph Mangele to badmouth Jews, and praise Hitler, are they also welcomed?

When one deliberately offend an entire community, one must take responsibility and try to make amends, not give poor excuses. I pray that your actions were a matter of poor judgment and that you will try to repair the hurt and bad deeds to this noble exiled society.

My freedom and my rights end when I infringe upon your freedom and your rights, and viceversa. Sir, you may be the University President, but you have much to learn and understand the law of this land and the rights of the people, all of the people, including Cuban-Americans.

Respectfully,
Rosa C. Novellas-Bengochea, P.A.

Subject: Visa for Victor Dreke

Dr. Modesto A. Maidique
Rector, Florida International University

Dear Dr. Maidique:
Some information has come to my attention in regards to the visit of Mr. Victor Dreke to your university for a "conference" on the nation of Congo in Africa.
I find this invitation to Mr. Dreke most disgusting since this subject is a well known criminal. This action surely brings discredit upon your university, not to mention a slap in the face to all freedom loving Americans.
Although you may or may not be responsible for this un-American activity, you certainly have the freedon, (and in my view) the obligation to speak against it. Mr. Dreke is a criminal who should be put on trial upon the liberation of Cuba.
Our First Amenmend rights to free speech certainly do not extend to characters such as Mr. Drake.
I am a proud American Vietnam veteran. You can be assured that this action is an insult, not only to me, but to all American war veterans who went to combat to exterminate subjects such as Mr. Dreke.

Sincerely,
Jorge A. Maspons,U.S.Army (Retired)

Subject: Cuban terrorist invited to speak at Florida University

1/15/02
Dear Mr. O’Reillly:
This is a case very similar to the one you exposed about the Middle Eastern professor who was inviting terrorists to speak and spread their propaganda in a Florida’s university.
In the middle of the terrorist threat to this country it is hard to believe that this connoted Cuban terrorist was invited to speak at our universities, and even more outrageous still, that the State Department gave this murderer an entrance visa to our country.
I am sure this is going to be of your utmost interest.
Sincerely,
