The GGG Digest -- Gods, Graves, Glyphs (alpha order)
...about the Alamo. See it on TCM this weekend for some rousing if thinly veiled Thermopylae references. The men are told that if they defend the Alamo, Santa Ana's forces will be confused and will have to regroup, giving Sam Huston's forces time to prepare themselves -- and win.
if you research the spartan way of life, you will see that they were ardent homosexuals, loved slavery, beat women often, were worshipers of kings, were autocratic, dictatorial and for all intents and purposes, according to even the norms of that time: totally barbarian.
they loved to kill and ultimately, they attacked Athens and occupied it.
the idea that they were western is a modern hoax as they never identified with the west as there was nothing in the west at that time: it was gathering of tree-habitation, cave inhabiting and (some) cannibalism-practicing primitive tribes. all of them craved to be in Asia minor and Asia major, which were rich, fertile and civilized. civilization was around the Mediterranean sea, not in Europe that was in pre-dark ages, with noting in it.
on the other hand, Persia was like the later Rome or the modern America, full of technological knowledge, academies, civilization, modern cities, cultured and advanced ways of life. it was the greatest empire in the world, as is America now [or was Rome once].
Spartans were never considered civilized by other Greek city states, and there was nothing nationally Greek then, they were constantly fighting amongst themselves but united only to repel a larger enemy.
most Greek politicians were on the payroll of the Persian governors of the neighboring regions, throughout ancient history.
300 is also false as there were 7000 defending a small pass. they were butchered easily and spartan king’s body could not be found.
Greek historians [if one can call them that] were play-writes and earned their livelihood from writing plays and drama. they embellished stories, created heroics, made fantastic events from small events or from no events at all.
one may use one’s intelligence and realize that most, if not all of this is either false or fiction or exaggeration.
it was primarily the naval worries that Xerxes decided to take his army out, as he could not get the navy in place, in time. Athenians were delighted, Themistocles was euphoric and asked his soldiers not to intervene or fight the Persian for fear that Xerxes may decide to turn and pursue the battle, and Athenians let him make the decision to withdraw.
appreciate your historical knowledge. bravo!
