Reverse psychology? Hmmm... maybe. My mom absolutely loathed country music and so did I. There are some country artists I like now that I'm older though.

Amen!!! And even though I said in my previous post that she is a no-talent...I actually think she has a very good voice. She can sing, she just doesn't prove it often. Sadly though, as the poster who claimed she broke barriers, she is listed as respected and admired by millions in polls related to the subject.

without Madonna, female music artists would be drastically different today

That's the point! without Madonna maybe we would see some nobility and morals musically and otherwise.
You need to find another worthy of your praise

I agree with your entire post (especially the part about Jagger, whom I've seen in concert and who is utterly talentless).

And speaking of talentless, lets talk about the Queen. She:

1. Did a crappy job of raising her loser kids despite all the utter privilege.

2. Doesn't do much of anything, yet expects to be supported in a lavish lifestyle just because of who she was born to.

3. I'm not sure that the whole royal family isn't bred a little close in a "Deliverance" kinda way (I never got the feeling that any of 'em were too bright).

4. Married a guy who insists on wearing a lot of medals, but who never appeared to do anything to earn them.

5. Has no sense of clothing style - whoever is buying her clothes got stuck in 1952 and never went forward.

Compared to her, Madonna is a brilliant success. Any trained monkey could do what the Queen does.

They need to end the institution and public funding of the monarchy.

No, it was a different song. I think it was her first release, and it was only played on black radio stations where I live. 'Burning Up for your Love' was the song I think. Then it was 'Borderline'. It was the style of music and her voice that made us think she was black. No other white female artist at that time made music like that.

Her place in pop music history is more of a reflection of the slide of American mores in the 80's.
The 80s was actually the best time I can think of to be in one's late teens/early 20s. No draft, good economy through most of it, Reagan was President (and Clint Eastwood had his own police force, in the words of another icon of the decade) and America was on the rise. Not to mention that Reagan had the support of 2/3 of younger voters. Music wasn't priggishly clean, but lacked the "woe is me" whininess of the '90s.

For all her faults, Madonna was a part of that. Her early songs were excellent. Sure her act was a little "trashy". It sold. Don't we believe in capitalism?

In reality, it was Ronald Reagan who sealed the "decline in morality" of the 1980s by refusing to let the government (specifically the FCC) resume the role of Nanny. Doing this helped seal his support among young voters, which helped him maintain the mandate that allowed him to transform this nation.

Yep - despite best efforts to the contrary, popular entertainment wasn't returned to the never-neverland that didn't really exist in the 50s. Reagan knew it, an handled that as best he could.

I agree with what you wrote. She is very talented but her views suck. And yea, like Mick Jagger has any basis to talk someone down.

Oh, I wasn't really complaining about Madonna, my main point was that capitalism works - if no one would've bought into the trashy image Madonna was selling, she wouldn't be the millionaire she is today. And I in no way want the govt to take on more of a nanny role than it already has. I agree with you 100% about the 90's music: if we in the 80's had pop ho's like Madonna and goofy hair bands, they at leas knew how to have a good time and ROCK. I couldn't stand the introspective piss-and-moan of 90's music either.

There are many female artists I like- including mellow singers like Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson, Celine Dion etc. There is nobility in many female singers. But I thought rock and roll was supposed to be fun. Hell, even Elvis, the Beatles, and the Doors caused controversy with their music. And now they're considered pioneers.

A hauntingly beautiful song. The girl has lyrical talent for sure. Ironically, Madonna signed her.

Without Madonna, there would not be Alanis Morissette, Courtney Love, Pink, etc.

Like we needed more reasons to hate her.

Not that it amounts to a hill of beans...but...a hundred years from now I'll wager the female vocalists still being listened to as part of the "good old oldies" will include:

Ella Fitzgerald

Peggy Lee

Maria Callas

Kiri Te Kanawa

Doris Day

and several others who were(1)pretty good money managers (2)sang understandble lyrics and(3)never had to disrobe on the street

"I hope the Queen washed her hands afterwards."

Acltually, that's why the Queen always wears gloves when she's going to have to shake hands with people (not related specifically to Madonna, of course). She's not real fond of touching other people's hands in any case, but she also doesn't want to get a lot of germs or sticky hands, or whatever.

Ha! Well, at least when she was asked who she thought was a better singer between Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand, she chose Celine! Bet Babs was pissed.

Kinda like choosing between the better torture (from the point of view of the victim).
