Their, there, they're (Spellcheck = an evil device) [TOTAL Vanity]
11/19/02

"There, their, my child," cooed the old school marm. "Your all right. It's just so easy to mix words up in yore mind."

"You see, a lot of them sound alike, and are even related in meaning. But if your ever going to be a good writer, you'll have to learn the difference. Their three different words, you see, and they'res really a difference." "When you hear them, theirs a chance you can't tell the difference, but if you write them, you're readers will be confused by what you mean, if your using the wrong one."

"Their are times when you want to say long ago, and that word is yore. And then they're are times you want to say you are, and that word is you're. And what does that leave? Your means belonging to you."

"But that's not all; when you want to say belonging to them, the word is their, and when you want to say that place, the word is there."

"And finally, they're means they are."

"Any questions?"

It drives me nuts, too. And I make the mistake regularly enough to point the finger at myself.

I know the right answers. I'm just typing and words flowing and the next thing you know their on the page wrong.

Z

ps: and spellchecks don't catch them.

Hate to sound like the "language Nazi" but it drives me CRAZY when I'm reading a post and these words are misused.

Ditto. And, FWIW, her ability to use these words properly was one of the reasons why I decided to ask my wife to marry me....

Your loosing it. :-)

refers to the act of you untying it, as in "loosing the dogs of war." You're losing it.

Looking at the calender, we see that we have entered a new millenium. Hopefully, the English language can survive a little longer. But we are totally in danger of loosing the language. Bad spelling is literally exploding before our eyes. I'm like, can it get any worse? Were in desparate need of a return to proper spelling, which is intrical to preserving our language.

Then theirs the matter of the proper use of apostrophe's, which is a carry-over concern from the 90's. But thats' a whole seperate topic.

The nauseous substance renders you nauseated.

I've always like these rules.

A Few, Pungent, Pointed Tips for Writers

1. Don't use no double negative.
2. Make each pronoun agree with their antecedent.
3. Join clauses good, like a conjunction should.
4. About them sentence fragments.
5. When dangling, watch your participles.
6. Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
7. Just between you and I, case is important too.
8. Don't write run-on sentences they are hard to read.
9. Don't use commas, when they aren't necessary.
10. Try to not ever split infinitives.
11. Its important use apostrophe's correctly.
12. Correct spelling is esential.

You gonna whip 'em about lay vs. lie too? How about imply vs. infer or who's vs. whose or its and it's?

Surely no one makes those errors any more.

I had an interesting spell check experience back in the ol' college daze. While typing a paper I ran "does not" together to spell doesnot. Spell check suggested the proper spelling was "doe snot." Good thing I caught it before turning it in! :)

You seem to be inferring that we ought to obey you're rule's irregardless of it's consequences. That seems a little mischievious to me.

In a forum of ideas, people should focus on what the writer is trying to say, not his spellings or his grammer. I find it very rude when an "a hole" corrects my spelling. He knows what I was trying to say! Please, save your criticism for your wife? or your poor kids! Get a life!
