Could somebody please explain to me why we didn't need campus speech codes in the 70s when I was in college but we do need them now? What exactly has changed? I don't get it.

What exactly has changed? The balance of power; the supposed stewards of civilization surrendered to the barbarians.

Several committee members - who include two top deans and six students - said yesterday they have deeply mixed feelings about the need for such a code, and were concerned that it might limit open speech.

Ya think?!

A Harvard Law School committee announced plans yesterday to draft a speech code that would ban harassing, offensive language from the classroom....

examples of words/phases that will be considered offensive include:

tax cuts
war on terror
Jesus
Reagan
capitalism

unless, of course, they are proceeded with a vulger term, which negates their offensiveness.

I think it was William F. Buckley (sp?) that said something like
"I'd rather my country be run by the first three hundred names in the Boston phone
book than by the faculty of Harvard."

(anyone with the exact quote, please correct me...)
