PM aide called Bush a moron: report

STEPHEN THORNE
Canadian Press

Thursday, November 21, 2002

OTTAWA -- Opposition MPs called on Prime Minister Jean Chretien to fire a top aide Thursday after she reportedly referred to U.S. President George W. Bush as "a moron." Officials in the Prime Minister's Officer were investigating. "Does one good friend treat another by calling its leader a moron?" Alliance MP Jason Kenney asked during question period.

Kenney said Canada-U.S. relations have deteriorated to their lowest level in decades because of the Liberals' "knee-jerk anti-Americanism."

The remark was reported by National Post reporter Robert Fife from Prague, where NATO leaders, including Bush and Chretien, are meeting. Fife quoted a PMO official as saying "What a moron." He did not name anyone.

The report came out of a comment by Chretien's communications director Francoise Ducros, overheard complaining in a private conversation that Bush was using the NATO summit to beat war drums against Iraq.

Chretien tried to douse the controversy, saying the remark was inappropriate. Bush is "a friend of mine," Chretien said.

"He's not a moron at all, he's a friend. My personal relations with the president are extremely good."

In Ottawa, Industry Minister Allan Rock said "if such a thing was said by a person in a position of responsibility, it's completely unacceptable."

"We have a valued relationship with the United States, this is a sensitive time," he said. "We should be emphasizing how much we value that relationship and we should be very careful at this very sensitive time."

Tory Leader Joe Clark said the U.S. president "was slandered by a senior official with the prime minister at an international conference."

"They should not be playing cute about it," he said. "They should be making a direct apology to the United States government . . . and they should be identifying that person and sending that person home immediately."

CTV reporter Craig Oliver said the remark was made in a conversation with a reporter in a media room but Fife called it a briefing.

"This is a briefing room. There's a couple of reporters here, it was a briefing. I wrote it down."

In Washington, a State Department official whose area of responsibility includes Canada said he hadn't heard about the remark. In any event, he said: "We have no intention of going anywhere near it with a 10-foot pole."

The controversy came on the heels of comments by Defence Minister John McCallum that Bush should mind his own business when it comes to Canadian defence policy.

McCallum made the remarks after Bush chided some weaker members of the western military alliance for not spending enough on their armed forces. Bush didn't single out any countries by name.

"I would not urge the president of the United States or the U.S. Ambassador (Paul Cellucci) to do my job - to ask for more defence spending," McCallum said.

"I think that is a Canadian matter, I think that a number of Canadians were a little bit ticked off. . . . So while Mr. Bush may be asking for what I'm asking for, I'm not asking for his help."

Cellucci wouldn't comment on McCallum's remarks, but said Thursday it's his job to "respectfully articulate" U.S. policies and interests.

NDP Leader Alexa McDonough was smiling.

"One thing I've learned in 23 years of political life is that you should try to separate between the person and the office - but sometimes that's pretty hard to do," said McDonough.

"I guess there's a lot of people who have had harsher things than that to say about the president of the United States, particularly based on his recent performance."

The National Citizens Coalition said the prime minister should fire Ducros for what it called a "disgraceful" comment.

"The United States is Canada's best friend and closest ally," said coalition vice-president Gerry Nicholls.

"Blatant anti-American attitudes should not be tolerated among government officials."

Canada is currently going hippie, wearing flowers in their hair and singing, "Give peace a chance."

Quite frankly, Canada is 'Eurotrash West' and, much like American Communists (and Democrat Socialists) hiding in the democr@p Party here, they don't deserve the freedoms that America makes possible for them.

Yes, and spending all their funds on social programs while letting the U.S. carry the burden of military needs for the U.S. and Canada. If they don't have the weapons, how can they be asked to use them.

These comments by members of the liberal party are actually a good thing. The liberal party is on the ropes nationally (has been loosing most local and provincial elections) and this will hasten the return of the Conservatives. So rejoice!!

Is it not, in reality, a kind of compliment for an American, any American, to be called a "Moron" by a Canadian, any Canadian ? N'est ce-pas? (isn't it so)

This is not the first time, that liberal elitiste-supreme Francoise Ducros has uttered such anti-Bush sentiments. She is reknown for here slavish adoration of the Democrats and for her general disdain for conservatives. This is not her first anti-Bush outburst. She is on record as pronouncing the 2000 Bush win as a "stolen election".

Her unflattering and insulting comments about the Alliance, and Alliance MP's has been reported in the past.

Francoise Ducros represents everything reprehensible and detestable about liberals/Liberals.

Canadian Freepers will be freeping Ducros, with a mail-in Freeping, email freeping and a phone messages.

Complementary thread at Free Dominion: Francoise Ducros is a Dumb C***

Chretien said...."He's not a moron at all, he's a friend. My personal relations with the president are extremely good."

That's not exactly the kind of comment I would expect from "a friend". A true friend of Bush would have expressed indignation, and come to the defense of the man's character upon hearing such a comment. Chretien is a weasel.

Sounds like the Canadian Liberal Party is self-destructing in much the same way that the US RAT Party is self-destructing. When the enemy is committing suicide, we should not interfere.

Damn it, stop lumping us Canadians together. We out in the West absolutely HATE the federal Liberals, with their anti-Americanism, arrogance and corruption. We didn't vote those morons into power, Ontario and Eastern Canada did. Blame them.

If I had a choice I'd separate all Western Canada and join it to the United States. We're a better fit.

My friend, I apologize. But understand, the 'big-n-easy' of socialism by the sheeple is still alive, but no longer quite predominant, in America. And Canada, all of it, is referenced as a role model when socialists/communists in America try to push their idealogues. The conservative camps in both countries need to push through or this decade will be the beginning of the end of the world as we know it. It could be anyway...

I would like to apologize to you, my American friends, for this insult to your President.

No need to apologize. We have enough left wing, liberal/socialist/communist pinkos here, saying the same thing. They are all the same, no matter where they come from. BTW, I see those Sens hung a whuppin' on those Canadiens.

I suggest the U.S. should impose a tax on Canada so that they pay a fair share of the military protection we afford them. What would they about it? Really??
