Chechen Warlord Warns of Attacks on Russia

Sat Nov 23, 1:00 PM ET

By Richard Balmforth

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Chechen warlord who says he was behind last month's mass hostage-taking in Moscow warned on Saturday his group would launch new strikes in Russia if it did not pull its troops out of Chechnya (news - web sites).

Chechen rebel commander Shamil Basayev, Russia's public enemy number one, told NATO (news - web sites) leaders in an open letter that they should put pressure on Moscow to pull out of the Muslim North Caucasus territory and start peace negotiations.

"Chechen Mujahideen have a full right and possibilities to carry out strikes on the territory of the aggressor country, adequate to what the Russian military clique has been conducting and is still continuing to conduct on the territory of Chechnya," the English text of the letter said.

"We are also warning that all military, industrial and strategic facilities on the territory of Russia are legitimate military targets for us, whomever they may belong to," the statement, issued by the rebel Kavkaz Center, said.

"We also warn that the new generation is coming to take our place, the generation of orphans, whose fathers and mothers were killed on the orders by the Kremlin regime," it said.

The statement was signed by the Command of the Reconnaissance and Sabotage Battalion "Riyadus Salihin," the group that Basayev heads and whose units launched the attack on a theater in the south-east of Moscow late in October.

TRAUMATIC SIEGE

A total of 128 hostages and all 41 rebels were killed when Russian special forces stormed the theater after three days, ending a siege that traumatized Russia and shook President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites) who came to power vowing to crush the rebels.

Almost all the dead hostages were killed by a strong narcotic gas used by the security forces to knock out the rebels.

The bearded Basayev, a terror figure in Russia since his group took several hundred people hostage in a Budyennovsk hospital in southern Russia in 1995, claimed responsibility for the theater operation within days of it ending.

The Kremlin says Basayev's claim was partly intended to divert blame for the attack from fugitive rebel president Aslan Maskhadov with whom it refuses to hold peace talks.

Russian forces have been battling Chechen separatist rebels in the rebellious southern province on and off since 1994.

Putin has been only partially successful in winning western support for his contention that Russia's fight against Chechen separatism is on a par with the U.S.-led war against the Al Qaedr network behind the September 11, 2001, airliner attacks in the United States.

The guerrilla statement was heavy with reproach for NATO leaders and the West whom it accused of hypocritically defending the "barbaric aggression" of Russian forces in Chechnya.

It called on the leaders of NATO and other international bodies to exert pressure on Putin to cease military operations, pull Moscow's forces back to beyond 100 km (62 miles) of the Chechnya border and start peace negotiations with Maskhadov.

Why would the Chechen think NATO would be helpful to the Mujahideen? Hmmm?

Better idea, nuke Grozny and all of the mountain areas in Chechnya ... then wait for someone to speak up about peace negotiations; repeat as necessary.

Why would Basayev think NATO should pressure Putin? It's almost a requirement for al Qaeda members to do a tour in Chechnya. NATO helps him, they're helping al Qaeda.

I remember reading Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago years ago where he relates the extreme hatred of Russia and fierce independence of Chechens in Stalin's gulags. They were fanatic ememies of Stalin and Communism and many of them were banished to Siberian labor camps were they died or were murdered by the hundreds of thousands by Stalin's NKVD.
When the German's invaded the Soviet Union and their troops reached Chechen territory one of the first things they did was allow open religious freedom in the region which resulted in many Chechen men enlisting under the Nazi banner so they could even the score with their Russian tormentors. Germany captured many millions of prisioners during their campaign in Russia and always found a stream of ready recruits in the camps among the Chechens and the Ukraininians. What is taking place in Chechnya today is no doubt a tragedy of major proportons but the Chechens lost much international support and good will when they allied their cause with radical Islam-but for this many of us would no doubt be avid supporters of their cause.

It is not the Chechens alignment with radical Islam that I abhor, but their terrorist strategy. They have a history in the past ten years of killing large numbers of people in apartment buildings, hospitals and theaters. It is because of this that I encourage the Russians to crush them.

They know NATO is a political group. So they are exploiting it just as the KLA did.

Sounds like a plan. Use it and let the Islamofascist/kazis die. Then let the left wing mediots around the world scream. Maybe he could coordinate his attack when we start to remove the world's biggest Islamofascist clymer, Uncle Sadda. Then two cancers can be removed at the same time.

Yes but it was not quite like that.

NATO created the KLA. KLA did not force NATO into a war. NATO created the war with its tools of war (KLA).

NATO is NOT a political organisation. It is a military organisation.

On a day where a veteran MI-6 operative is wounded in London -- and one of Mr D's running mates (NC GOP state senate candidate) is gunned down in Washington County, North Carolina -- one is starkly reminded how the jackbooted forces of evil can strike anywhere at any time. Now much like a 21st century Howard Beale, the greatest fighter on the face of this earth -- Shamil Basayev -- advises he is "mad as hell and not going to take it anymore..."

The Russian Federation will soon be destroyed...

Every Chechen male since the days of Stalin vowing a holy oath to liberate Chechnya from Russian barbarism. Slavic hordes have attacked and attempted to subjugate landed free men in Chechnya for more than a century and a half. The madman Putin fools only himself if he believes Moscow can triumph in this unjust war.

There can never be humour in studying the agonizing deaths of the hundreds of thousands who have perished beneath the Russian genocidal fury. Yet the funny thing in the equation is that for the "experts" Russia appears to be the stronger entity -- but in reality is far weaker than the Chechen side. The third-rate Russian military is a formidable force against women and children but against veteran Eastern freedom fighters the flimsy structure is mauled each week with another two dozen dead and scores wounded.

Meanwhile Chechen freedom fighters, battling under the holy banner of Nationalism, grow stronger each month. The continued expansion of the rebel operational front into the heart of Russia is sound grand tactical doctrine for the side that has regained strategic momentum. With "Allah's Suitcase" successfully ensconced within the target perimeter, Shamil Basayev now holding all the cards...

And Putin knows this...

Thus Russia will surrender or die. The European Union tree huggers will force a Russian withdrawl and subsequently send international observer teams to Chechnya or they will become marginalised just like NATO. This the final EU opportunity to save their teetering house of cards.

Dry is good and wind is better...

Regardless, Shamil Basayev has made it as clear as humanly possible to Moscow that they must yield or be destroyed. Putin just another Russian thug sporting a cheap suit and bad haircut. Shamil Basayev, the proverbial one-legged man in the a** kicking contest, about to ruin Putin's week in a very big way...

The forces of freedom on the move. Europe trembles.

Russia is free to do what it pleases with that dungpile....crush it or leave it....no one really cares. I don't expect euro tree huggers to make so much as a peep....they're too busy with their own little fracas in the balkans.

LOL!!!!!

Hey Fusion .....i normally enjoy your crazy rants, however i think you have been off your medication for too long (and i am shocked the Marines at Gitmo let you off the cell to use the computer)! After all if you think a cowardly murderer like that Chechnyan terrorist Shamil Basayev is the 'greatest fighter on Earth' then there might be something seriously wrong with you. And when i read you saying that because Baseyev has 'Allah's Suitcase' that means victory i start to wonder exactly where your allegiances are .....after all i know of one other personage who has been seeking 'Allah's Suitcase' and his initials are UBL!

Anyways let me just say i normally enjoy your little word plays! They are funny, and as i said before FR needs its local jesters to spice up the forum with comic relief!

However i sincerely hope that you are the only jester who thinks the way you do (that is outside the middle east and other cesspools of terrorism in the world).

And by the way the Russian army, which you say 'is mauled each week with another two dozen dead and scores wounded' is actually killing scores of Chechnyan terrorists! So many infact that the majority of Chechnyan fighting groups have fled into Georgia (and 3 weeks ago the Georgian government decided to kick them out after the Moscow bombing ...which shows that not only is Baseyev a murderer but he is also stupid since he is distancing his few allies). Also when the Chechnyan terrorists invaded the adjacent nation of Dagestan to convert it into an islamic state (after being paid cash by a Saudi source) the Russian army came and kicked their measely behinds all the way out of Dagestan! The Chechnyans were slaughtered!

And by the way every time Russia uses weapons like Pinnochio rockets and Fighter-bombers armed with thermobaric explosives the little Chechnyan cowards run screaming to the UN! However now that Baseyev has shown his true colors Putin has the opportunity to do as he wills with the Chechnyans, and this time the US and UN will not intervene! Actually if you check currently the only nation that is helping the Chechnyans is Denmark! In the 90s (before that stupid Baseyev proved he is nothing mroe than a cowardly terrorist) many nations supported the Chechnyans since they thought them to be freedom fighters! The US, UK, and other western nations, as well as adjacent states like Georgia supported Chechnya! However Baseyev has foolishly shown his true colors, and now all the Chechnyan allies (apart from Denmark) have gone! And in a couple of weeks Putin is going to play his hand, and Baseyev, together with several thousand Chechnyan terrorists, will be blown off the face of the earth .....and there will be no one to stop it since the rest of the world will look the other way!

As for your favorite quotation (The forces of freedom on the move. Europe trembles. ) well ....this is what i think! The forces of freedom are indeed on the move ...however it is not Europe that trembles ....instead it is cowardly terrorists like UBL and Baseyev since the world is quickly heading to a point where terrorists will be exterminated on sight!

You know the Russians Fusion! Even though you normally act mad i believe you still have enough of your faculties to know that the Russians do not joke around and can be quite ruthless! What do you expect is going to happen once Putin is sure the US is not going to protest if he really decides to stomp out the Chechnyan terrorists? You know what .....Putin will not send conscripts into Chechnya and surrounding areas, but instead will utilize a stratagem that will leave multitudes of Chechnyans dead! (Actually a small nuclear explosion over the area can be easily attributed to a large meteorite exploding in the sky ....like what happened in Siberia decades ago! Easy solution, and with the US looking the other way .....)

And do you know what! The world will not care that the Chechnyans are dead! It will not even make the late edition of the next day's paper!

The worst part is that Greg Dority, follow Fusion's Fractured Faery Tale link on my profile, is a US politician...that's right, a traitor to America who supports Islamic terrorists openly and advocates more terror on America's allies. I think a serious Justice Department investigation on this politician should be launched...if he was just a private citizen, that's one thing, but a person who is or is aspiring to be a public figure who advocates such behavior for America's enemies is not only a disgrace but a traitor.

Oh and Baseyov has been hiding in Turkey for over a year, sending others to die while he lives the good life...very typical of this scum.

If they were murdered by the hundreds of thousands then there wouldn't be to many of them left, since as a population max, there were less then one million Chechins. Love how rediculous numbers keep getting tossed around, like Stalin butchering 80 to 120 million Russians...which would have been more then half the population...yes he killed millions but some perspective, please.

A part that made me laugh is when the article quotes a guy discussing his experience at meeting Greg Dority (Fusion to freepers). Here it is (i have underlined parts i find either crazy or funny):

He took us to a restaurant called the Black Rooster, which has a courtyard with a thatched roof that was kept wet and dripped sheets of water into old stone runnels, and we ate trout from Lake Ohrid - a fish so rare, and from a lake so clear and deep that Enver Hoxha banned anyone but himself from fishing it, on penalty of thirty year's hard labor. the fish was interesting, but rather more so was the man Shaun brought as his guest - an American named Greg, who came from North Carolina, said he was a journalist working for George magazine in New York, and by his own admission paced the streets of Tirana at all hours of the night gathering, as he put it, "financial intelligence."

I never quite knew what to make of him. He was tall, languid, educated, he spoke with an elaborately courteous southern drawl and he dressed impeccably. He had a strange accent, an odd manner: He kept referring to "the province" which he claimed to visit regularly, when he was speaking of Kosovo, and on those few occasions he used the word he called it Koss-oh-vo, with a long second o. He referred to his present home as being in a nation called Alb-ah-nia.

~Page 175

He gave the impression, as I am sure he half-intended, that he was some kind of American spy - which, when I compared him with the handful of real spies I knew, he almost certainly was not - or else was an extremely inept one. His journalistic contacts were far fewer than he suggested at first, and when I pressed him he could cite only having done an occasional piece on local casinos for a Texas-based journal devoted to gambling. I was puzzled by him, and after spending half a day wandering the back streets fo the city with him and getting hopelessly lost, I concluded that he was probably one of those Walter Mittyish characters who are often thrown up by the atmospheres of strange cities like Tirana - sad men who attach themselves, limpetlike, to the journalists and other temporary figures who briefly settle during the crisis, who eke out an existence in a more drab and banal way than they pretend, and who then, and before they are discovered, pack up and move on somewhere else. I had seen such people before, in Kabul, in Beirut, in Buenos Aires, and he seemed to fit the modus operandi.

EXCELLENT question!! I'm afraid there are still enough hollywood-type liberals out there who have not been (personally) affected closely enough by the daily terrorism to get a grip on reality. It's gonna take an attack on Hollywood itself to get some of these pathetic "head-in-the-sand" types to wake up. THEN, maybe, we can start playing cowboys and muslims and end this thing!

Stay vigilent, stay armed, and NEVER trust a muslim!
