In Raleigh, N.C., one person's leg was broken and two people suffered knee injuries on the field when fans tore down goal posts following North Carolina State's 17-7 victory over No. 14 Florida State.

Suffered knee injuries? What'd they do? Scrape their knees? What's wrong with tearing down the goalposts after the game? People have been doing it for years!! Granted, we tried to do it 8 seconds before the game ended, but heck it was Florida State!!

The Europeans ans South Americans often riot and kill after a soccer game, we should reject such stupidity ! It is only a game, folks.

I would like to see mass arrests and prosecution for any and all "fans" who do not quietly and orderly leave the stadium . This tearing down of goalposts and other vandalism should be nipped in the bud. Perhaps a week in jail and a $500 fine would be a start ?

Reminds me again why I like auto racing fans. I've been to about a half dozen NASCAR races and have seen drunken fans with watermelons on their heads but I have never seen anyone out of control.

Football celebrations got out of hand ...

At the turn of the previous century, College Football was almost killed off by player violence but was saved by Theodore Roosevelt. Looks like we need another White House intervention to save it from its fans.

How stupid and un-necessary but so typical of today's party-hearty college cliques. I know that there are those who go to study and that some of these rowdies are the 'victims' of alcohol, but the Universities need to start re-asserting discipline and true punishments.

There's a 2 step simple solution that would end 99% of this. First, severely stiffen the penalty for rioting, a minimum of 1 year in jail with no possibility of probation for even first time offenders. Should take care of visiting fans rioting, seeing as how they would go before an unsympathetic opponent's jury. Second, if it is the home fans that riot, add a new NCAA rule that requires that team to forfeit the victory or a prior victory. Tear down the goalposts, lose the game.

If the OSU and WSU administrations is really about academics and displaying class, they will forfeit their respective shots at the mythical national championship and Pac-10 championships. But of course, we know it likely isn't about that for either administration.

Harsh? Sure, but it would put an end to this crap. There is also precedence for sacrificing onfield success in the name of virtue. I forget the schools, but many years ago a school forfeited a victory that was earned on a bad call. That school was neither the universities of '5th Down' Colorado nor 'Tie Goes To' Notre Dame.

Agreed. We've got TV cameras covering the stadiums, shouldn't be hard to get solid evidence against many of the spoiled rich kid perps. Keep it simple and simply make it a felony to go onto the field, mandatory jail time, no probation or buying off with a fine.

I agree. There should be heavy fines.
I went to a Raider game this year where the opposing running back scored a touchdown in OT in front of a fan section known as the Black Hole and he was pelted with anything they could throw at him. It really turned me off and made me realize how personal some people take these games. It was like he just broke into their house and stole their car..or worse. To those fans...GET A LIFE YOU LOSERS!

As a now FORMER Cougar fan, the fans reaction to the end of the game was disgusting enough that I am divorcing myself from ever rooting for them again.

If they were so stupid that they think throwing bottles at the opposition players and fans, actually trying to hurt them, is somehow appropriate because the official made a poor call, they don't deserve to have any backers anywhere. They should shut down the damn program if that's how they're going to act.

Throwing bottles at the players who were just trying their hardest in rivalry game??? That is really disgusting.

And if they want to look to for real reasons why the game was lost they maybe should ask why you can't even get off a play on 1st and goal, at home, in the 4th quarter, to ice the game.

What's wrong with tearing down the goalposts after the game?

Several reasons. First, there are almost always a number of serious injuries in the attempt. Second, goal posts are very expensive these days. It's not like the old days, when goal posts were just three poles (that's wooden poles, not Polish people) fastened together.

I will go out on a limb here and suggest that the school that forfieted the game because of a "fifth" down was Princeton. There was a lot of discussion of the various "fifth" down gsmes here in Kansas City after the Mizzou-colorafo fiasco back in 91 IIRC. All told there have been about half a dozrn fifth down games in college football over the last 100 years or so.
