Algeria 'kills top al-Qaida leader'

25/11/2002 - 16:57:58

An Islamic militant killed by Algerian security forces in a raid two months ago has been identified as a top al-Qaida operative for Africa, Algeria’s official news agency reported today.

Emad Abdelwahid Ahmed Alwan, alias Abu Mohammed, was shot and killed in the September 12 raid in the eastern Batna region, 270 miles east of the capital Algiers, the official APS news agency said.

The body of Alwan, a Yemeni, was identified after a two-month investigation by government experts, the report said. He was a top al-Qaida leader for northern and western Africa, it said.

Algeria’s military is fighting a ten year insurgency by Islamic militants, which has claimed more than 120,000 lives. Raids by soldiers on suspected militant hideouts are common.

JENIN, West Bank - Abu Mohammed, the military head of Islamic Jihad in this bombed-out Palestinian town, looks as if he's just rushed in from battle. His freshly bandaged hand is oozing blood and he can barely contain his hulking frame and nervous energy in the cheap plastic chair perched near the doorway of a house.

He will not say where he has been or explain how he was wounded. The Israelis would like to capture or kill Abu Mohammed, who commands one of the most dangerous Palestinian groups in one of the most dangerous Palestinian cities.

Right now, he is surrounded by a small squadron of teenage boys -- his acolytes. They are fresh-faced but intense, wearing faded jeans and Adidas sneakers.

Abu Mohammed, a man in his mid- to late 40s, will teach the boys to fire an M-16 rifle. A select few will learn how to strap grenades to their bodies and summon the will to walk into a place crowded with Israelis and blow themselves up in the quest to become martyrs.

This must be a mistake. There is no progress being made in the "war on terror".

Nothing to see here... move along.

Jumping Dead Yemini al Qaeda thugs!

The good news continues.

I doubt if that there are more than a few hundred key al Qaeda goat humping thugs left to kill.

So everyone that bites the dust is a big loss to their command structure.

It has taken them years to build up networks in their home countries and in countries where they flee like cowards in their wives burkas. So when one of these key al Qaeda thugs is killed, their cells and nets may just collapse without them.

More good news from the front. Not only do I like to hear this news for the obvious reason of there are fewer terrorists threatening us, but also it puts the war back on people's minds - helps them remember that this holiday season we've got folks deployed, putting their lives on the line for our freedom.

Please elighten us with the pictures only you see, the briefings only you receive, the knowledge only you have.

Certainly the progress is slow, as it is in fighting any irregular army, but please enlighten us how only you know that absolutely nothing is being done.

If you cannot, please change your posting name to URWrong

BTW, please don't let Daschle know about this killing, he'll be sooo disappointed.

A few days ago, someone (maybe you?) posted a list of the top AQ and their current status. I took that list and made a simple scorecard on my website. Here's a link: Top Al Qaeda Leaders. I don't see this new guy on the list although with all their damn aliases its tough to know who's who.

"How is it that in every country..." you ask about their religion?

I think we all know by now. They are NOT like us at all. All religions are NOT created equal.

In our search for right standing with God, WE hunger and thirst for righteousness, so we baptise, confess, repent, take communion, extend mercy to our enemies and forgive those who wrong us. These are but a few of the religious "rites" of western civilization and the judeo-christian heritage we enjoy.

They seem to focus on only ONE rite
The hunger and thirst for, as well as the shedding of, innocent blood.
I guess you could lump that in with their other two primary "rites"; the murder and terror of those who do not pursue their murder-cult-god allah.

What "religion of peace" do they offer the world around them!?!
The peace of being a dead corpse after they 'islamize' a nation. The peace of experiencing the ceremonial and systematic slaughter called for by their islamic murder-cult-god, allah.

Abu Mohammed al-Masri This guy is on your list, is this him? I believe that is him. This particular goat humper was refered to as the head of operation for North and East Africa. The Abu Mohammed al-Masri on this list is refered to the same way. I'm keeping the list on my computer and I have him marked dead until someone says otherwise. This guy isn't just a big shot, he's a member of the Majlis the groups that's just under Binny himself. That makes 6 out of 16 of that group killed or captured so far. And the pace seems to be picking up.

You posted the good news: That makes 6 out of 16 of that group killed or captured so far. And the pace seems to be picking up.

The even better news is we have been told about 6 killed or captured. There may be more, and we will be told when their value is zero to us. They will be listed as dead weeks or months ago.

The Abu Mohammed al-Masri on this list is refered to the same way.

I've been carrying al-Masri as an Afghan Training Camp commander. I'm not saying you're wrong or I'm right - just that we may differ. But I, too, am wondering if this could be the guy, because the al-Masri on my charts is considered a key Bin Laden lieutenant. And if this isn't him, then this is an Al Qaeda big wig I haven't yet heard of.

Subtle was never my strong suit. I considered an M60 a good sidearm and my negotiating skills with local village chiefs was always enhanced by a few F-100 loaded with nape and snake orbiting overhead.

8 in SP howitzer made a great hooch defense weapon, too.

I think Turkey's safe because the military is determined to remain secularist.

Pakistan is iffy; despite popular misconceptions, there is a very strong strain of jihadism in the military.

Putin's words in Moscow did not refer to Pakitan's military in the singular; he used the word 'armies' implying different corps commanders with competing loyalties.
