This immigration poll...is it multiple choice?
Posted on 12/12/2002 5:02:46 PM PST by Conservababe
I would like to take the poll posted in breaking news of immigration issue, but it too wavy and vague to choose just one answer. Could we have less questions and more defined?

I agree, if given the choice I would have chosen all 3 of the following:
Illegal immigration is the problem.
Immigration should be reduced. (I assume this is legal immigration)
Borders should be closed.
I don't think these are mutually exclusive, nor do I think a single choice is all encompassing.

What I think would be interesting is to add a mandatory question to that poll - "which state do you live in?". I'd be interested to see if there's a geographic pattern of some sort in the 34% who voted "seal and militarize".. I'm willing to bet they're mostly states on the southern border, but it'd be interesting to see that suspicion documented by an FR poll.

I think it is a poorly drafted poll, with many OK answers to choose from, none of them ideal.
It confuses the issues of legal immigration and illegal immigration.
Legal immigration should be cut back, the borders should be strictly controlled, but not "sealed" (which would prevent lawful crossings by our citizens). And immigration legal and illegal is a big problem.
Medical tests and English literacy tests for all immigration candidates.

I think a $500 cash bounty for information leading to the arrest and deportation of any illegal alien should be instituted. That turnstile at the TJ border crossing would be spinning so fast, the bearings would glow red hot.
I would also be in favor of buying the northern 100km of Mexico and make it a live fire military reservation.

Oh, here we go.... we could have a whole new fraud scheme going (sort of like food stamps and welfare for unmarried girls who have babies to collect money)..... you turn in Jose (your cousin), he gets deported, you get $500 to split with him, the next week he comes back in under the name of Philpe, you turn him in again... so on and so on... see the possibilities?

I liked my informal poll last weekend better, where respondents got to answer yes or no on each question.
The results were (with 137 respondents):
The borders of the US should be carefully monitored to eliminate illegal entry into the country as much as possible
Yes-97.8%; No-1.5%
------
Those who are here illegally should be sent home
Yes-92.0%; No-3.0%; Depends/Qualified-3.6%
--------
Legal Entry into the country should be severely curtailed or eliminated
Yes-79.4%; No-18.4%; Depends/Qualified-1.5%
-------------
None of the above. (or) We should support our elected officials' policies and goals with regard to the borders
Yes-1.5%; No-94.9%
I've never done a link, but I'll try it (maybe madfly or someone else can help me here). The poll on FR has the problems of most polls...it splinters the overwhelming support for fixing the border situation. When people didn't have to choose an option, it was clear that the only place there was any support for the status quo is that a significant percentage (but nothing close to a majority) support some form of legal immigration. Also, the succcinct comments of the respondents (some who are not regular posters) were very interesting.

With this poll, the 2% that voted for open borders can say that a majority of Americans can't be expected to agree on what to do about the borders, if we here at FR can't. So, everything should just stay as it is until we study the situation a little more.
This reminds me of that 'Go GOP' poll a couple months back.

here's the problem i see with the poll as stated:
some of the choices define the problems i.e. illegal immigration; and
some of the choices define the solutions i.e. close the borders.
that's why there can be multiple good choices, and that's where the confusion lies.
the survey should be asking one or the other question.

I don't know what happened to the poll but seems to have been taken down very quickly...Maybe it was going in the wrong direction???
Don't know who put the poll up but it appears that it was intended to splinter the numbers for those in favor of shuttin down the border...
Hard to believe on FR...

I agree. I almost seems that the questions were made to fragment the results. It seems others can clearly see this too.

This seemed painfully obvious.

I am sure this was just an oversight, a minor mistake. Hehehe.
