ORANGE, CT. For 12 years Dariusz and Anna Sak and their two children, 19-year-old Arek and 17-year-old Joanna, have lived a typical American life in Orange after arriving here from their native Poland.

But they are back in Poland now after being abruptly deported last week by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which arrested them and had them immediately flown to their native country.

When was the last time you heard of this happening to an Hispanic family. It's okay to do this to these people because they are white. It sickens me.

This country will bend over backwards to accommodate people who want to change our social structure but a family who has assimilated must go.

Looks like totalitarizm is creeping in. Our "defense" agencies are great at "taking care" of Elian, Waco, assimilated immigrants, but can't put two and two together when it comes to real danger like turbanites flying our own airplanes into our buildings. What a shame!

Well, let's just abandon any immigration laws, then. Golly, they caught some white folks this time, and that just ain't right.

OK, so when the INS prepares to deport a productive, hardworking Mexican family after their visas run out and they make no move to leave after ordered to do so, I'll expect you to be the first one to protest against it.

If they were Jewish, Baptist, or Jehovah's Witness, they'd qualify for "refugee status" as a "traditionally oppressed religion." No need to prove actual oppression. No quotas on U.S. admission for refugees, and they automatically qualify for SSI, welfare, and food stamps, without having to wait five years.

Certain other groups (Vietnamese, Cubans, Nicaraguans) also qualify for refugee status, although I'm not sure if it's automatic.

These people (INS) are the same incompetent thugs who take innocent children that want live in freedom back to 'prison' (Cuba), but let terrorists come into our country so they can fly airplanes into buildings and murder 3000 of our people. I have no respect for the INS, they should be DONE AWAY WITH and replaced with mind-numbed robots!!!!

Korwek said the family was treated like criminals and given a choice by the INS ? stay in this country and appeal, but spend the next six months in prison without any chance to post bond or bail, or leave immediately.

Sounds like something they'd pull in a commie country. The parents probably remember that kind of stuff from when they lived behind the iron curtain. Wait a minute, something's not right here.

Were they carried away on eagles' wings? The Lord works in mysterious ways...

It's really very simple. Congress makes the laws and the executive branch enforces them. If Congress wants people to be allowed to remain here on temporary visas, they should pass legislation to make the visas permanent. Otherwise, I expect my government to enforce the law. That means every illegal Mexican, Guatemalan, Saudi Arabian, and, yes, hard-working person from Poland needs to be deported. Change the laws, fine. But enforce the ones that are on the books.

You'll have a hard time convincing me that judges shouldn't have a background in the law. Be that as it may, there are plenty of immigration attorneys who are funded by other parties to represent poor clients who are fighting deportation.

These people spoke English. There is no excuse for ignoring a court order. I certainly wouldn't try it, and I'm not going to make excuses for illegal aliens who try it.

They didn't have a lawyer and they didn't have race hustling lobby behind them! It's sickening to watch some of the knee jerk chauvinistic reactions here. If this had been a Mexican, African, Haitian family, there would have been endless debates (here too), editorials in the New York Times, demonstrations on the steps of the Capitol, President Bartlett Martin Sh!t getting himself arrested, and the chauvinists here all intimidated and afraid to speak out for fear of being accused of RACISM! But a buncha honkies? Who cares? Buh, bye illegal aliens, while you gladly tolerate millions of brownskinned ones collecting welfare!

The laws applied selectively and politically!

An illegal alien is a lawbreaker. There is no other status which describes this person.

If they are working in America, they are taking a job away from an American citizen or a legal alien who abided by our immigration laws upon entering our country.

Please read Can You Change America? & Can You Change America? Part 2 before replying with an emotional plea.

Maybe the administration is afraid Mr. & Mrs. Sak would spread the lessons they learned living in Poland under a police state complete with domestic spy agencies, warrantless searches, no habeas corpus, counter-productive tax structures and all the other things Americans seem so eager to embrace these days.

I feel bad for the kids if their parents didn't keep them in the loop.
However, from what little actual facts are in the piece, it seems the family was treated by the book.
Now, this needs to be applied across the board, and you can't cry foul for certain people just because they have assimilated better than others.

At this time I'd also like to point out that things are not always as they seem. Not all immigrants are here for a free ride or to abuse welfare etc.
I work with a Mexican man who works his ass off and sends every extra dime after rent and food to his wife and kids in Mexico. A practicing Catholic with 6 kids, he's here because there's no money/jobs there. He's building a house there, that'll he'll go back to, as he has no intention of bringing his family here (he does have other relatives who did bring families here though) and staying. He says too much discrimination against Mexicans, and plus I just think it's the general way of life and culture. He probably would never have come here if he could have adequately supported his family by working in Mexico. Meanwhile, he works here and spends money here and contributes to the economy. I'll also add that it's a shame I don't see the type of work ethic and drive that this man has, in other people I've worked with over the years.

To steal a phrase ...
Every one gets equal treatment under the law - some more equal than others.

The Sak family has the misfortune of not belonging to a demographically important voting block.
I don't think that we will see many of the other 10,999,996 illegals given the same treatment.

The latest figures I can find are from 2000, and they show that we deported 1.6 million people from the US that year. I am having a real tough time believing that most of them were white.

The family here seems to entered the country legaly. They also seem to have attempted to comply with the law. I believe though they did not have a lawyer. The INS judges tend to be irritated at people who don't get a lawyer.

OK, fair enough, and I am having a tough time believing that most of them were middle class families pursuing higher education. In fact, I would suspect that most of them were wetbacks caught at the, let's see, would that be the Northern border, and immediately bussed back across!

You must admit, the figures make the INS look real good, don't they?

Is he here legally?

If he is not, and you know he is not, you are part of the problem in condoning and contributing to illegal immigration. How is he more "worthy" than the man in Venesuela who has his name on an immigration list and is awaiting his green card?

Think about it.

Yes, I think the 1.6 million figure is padded with the wetback apprehensions and immediate deportations to make the INS look good. I think that this article was written in the first place because it is a rare situation among the 1.6 million yearly deportations. And the gut reaction of the original poster was right on target.

In the end, I agree with the poster above who wsays they'll be better off back in Poland, maybe not financially, but in other ways, as Poland and other countries of Eastern Europe seem at the moment healthier politically, socially and culturally than the greatest land on earth.

Well, if I had to guess, that 1.6 million included quite a few who were caught several times in the same year crossing the same river.

"The family was apprehended and arrested under a warrant for deportation on Dec. 3 and removed to Poland," said Grenier. "They were not criminal aliens, but were in violation of their status and they had been issued a final order of removal in August and given 30 days to tie up their affairs and depart."

These notices aren't sent in Polish?

So yes they were here legaly.

Doug, I'm not singling you out, I'm just using you to make a few points here.  They came here legally, all fine and good.  Once that visa ran out they were breaking our immigration laws the same as anyone else who is here illegally.  I'm not sure but aren't visa's issued for six months?  If that the case they have been here illegally for eleven and a half years.  Seems to me they have had plenty of time to comply and they haven't.

The question isn't one of skin color, or whether they work hard.  The question is are they illegal, and the answer to that is yes.

Another 1000 probably invaded from the south in the last 12 minutes and they will not be thrown out. This sucks.

You won't get an argument from me on that.  We all know why a blind eye is being turned to the invasion from the south, and it is an invasion.  All one has to do is follow the money.  They should just put a big sign on the southern border.  "County for sale cheap".

I don't disagree. They should have left when their Visa ran out. But it looks like selective enforcement if those from the South are not thrown out. If the invaders from the South are not challenged, these people should have been given the same consideration.

Whatever happened to "equal justice under the law"?

If we handle this deportation on a percentage basis, ( percent of polish immigrants in country on expired visas compared to percent of saudi, syrian, jordanian, iranian, chinese, mexican, columbian, venezualan, ad infinitum......)

Are there equal numbers of these other groups being deported?

I don't want to defend people overstaying their visas, but I have read of several incidents where people were still in the process of appeal, where the deportation made No Sense except as a publicity stunt by INS.
Doesn't anybody with sense run these bureacracies?

No. Any day now there will probably be yet another student visa renewal for Mohammed Atta showing up at the flight school.

I will admit that the family was in violation of our immigration laws, but there are zillions who are. Can't the IRS stake out the local jails rather than a fine arts school?

We've had the same problem at work. We tried mightily to get an English Structural Engineer to be able to have a permanent work permit to do work at our firm in a capacity for which we had no other candidate. Of course we were rejected! How silly of us to think that the US wants English people immigrating here.

What is WRONG with this country, that it takes in the garbage of the Third World from the gutters of Mexico City and Shanghai and Somalia and Cairo (like Mohammad Atta) and puts them on the welfare roles, but refuses talented and highly educated people from Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, India, etc. who are begging to bring in their capital and talents to America to fill jobs that are going begging?

This is all going to end very unhappily methinks.

Considering the numbers and the drain on our economy the mexican invasion is of more importance in my book.  I just don't have a problem with any illegal being thrown out.

We have the laws, they just need to be enforced.  The problem is the federal government has no intention of enforcing them except enough to give the appearance of trying.  Meanwhile they talk of amnesy, worker programs and all the other programs designed to circumvent out immigration laws.  Guess which will win out unless enough people make enough noise to get their attention.
