I think everyone has noticed. Especially those of us who have worked with the homeless. They never went away. They were hidden away until the Republicans came back. Like hiding a chess piece in your sleeve.

Not only were the "homeless" absent for 8 years but it seems that all the bums, hobos, tramps and freeloaders have completely disappreared.

Susy sounds like one of those who would load us conservatives into the ovens gladly...not very "peace & love"!

Yes, to some degree.

Each of us is delt a hand of cards, that is the materials we have to start with, some hands are better that others.

Each of us can play those cards in any way. A person with a pair of deuces can beat a royal flush. The race isn't always to the swift, but that's the way to bet!

I had fairly humble beginnings, my father was a career Marine, my mother is quite literally a coal miner's daughter. I worked my way through college, became an engineer, and have had a pretty successful career. I've also spent most of this year un- or under-employed. It's part of the risk I assumed by working for startups.

There are 80,000 people unemployed in Silicon Valley, last Sunday's San José Mercury News had ads for 65 engineering positions. Do the math.

None of us is more than one major medical problem, or extended economic downturn or lawsuit from real finacial difficulty.

How one responds to the challenge makes a difference, but even the best can stumble. The good ones get up on their own, some need help, some give up.

I'm very fortunate.

When she was 12, one of my former roommates was given a blanket by her mom, taken downtown, told she was on her own, and dumped off. She lived on the street for 12 years before she moved into my house. A 12 year old can't legally work in this country, how she survived, I will leave to your imagination. Maybe you want to blame her for her life. I can't bring myself to do it...

Kinda the same background here. Parents were farmers, no money for college, so I kept my grades up, read a lot, work and scholarships got me through college. Engineering degree, and then kept myself valuable to my employers.
This is why I have little tolerance for the "fortunate" argument. I wasn't "fortunate", but I developed skills, and didn't make too many mistakes to mess things up.

There are heartbreaking stories like your roommate's.
There are also some very generous people out there that will help out the truly needy/deserving, out of their own goodness.

With Republicans in charge of politics, the homeless will become the targets of abuse as usual...

Yeah, you know it, baby. And I can't wait...

When are we going to become aware of the tragedy of the beerless people? The answer to this is simple: if a person is beerless, give him a beer! Ah! but if you teach him to MAKE beer, he will have beer for life!

Could you make a "Thread of Threads", with listings of all the trolls of the day? They're very entertaining & I'd hate to miss one.

Type Admin Moderator into the search feature and then search by poster. It will bring them all up. They are fun to read.
