So if he can't be captain he'll take his toys and go home.
This kind of hand-it-to-the-Dems stupidity is why we need to write off Lott as a lost cause.
Weak-kneed spoiled cheerleaders -- who needs 'em?
To: sinkspur
The Dem strategy succeeds. Pubbies vacillate between dumb and dumbfounded.

That Trent Lott is such a nice fellow. I'm sorry to have said so many unjust negative things about him. </sarcasm>

This is exactly what Management 101 dictates: Demoted executives leave the company.
How would you feel if you were judged too racist to be Majority Leader, but not racist enough to be Senator from Mississippi?
Lott's not going to be humiliated, as Newt wasn't, and Livingston wasn't, either. That's for Democrats.

Just saw. Lott is an #ss. CNBC is also reporting that Lott is refusing to leave and that Lott has basically dared fellow republicans to throw him out. CNBC is reporting the white house wants Lott out but that senators need to do it. WE NEED A REAL SENATE LEADER TO RISE UP NOW. Lott can take his damn threats and go back to Mississippi. He's as bad as the dems.
To: Texasforever
I just wish he'd have had this much sack four years ago. Now,maybe we can "move on" and drop this phoney baloney feel good nineties bs and work on things that are real.

Jonathan Karl said three or four of the Senators viewed this as "blackmail," but that the majority still support Lott and want him to continue as Leader Well, that seals it.
Trent Arnold Jeffords Lott shows his true colors.
What a waste of human skin.
To: sinkspur
Oh...like Aaron but with more testosterone.
To: sinkspur
He acts like somebody has his FBI file and controls him or something.
To: the_doc
Mississippi has a rat governor, if Lott leaves he will appoint another rat. Is that what we all want.

"Trent Lott, in a conference call with 27 GOP Senate Republicans today, said that he would leave the Senate if forced from the Leader position." When it comes time to defend his own position of authority and perquisites, that Trent Lott turns into one tough SOB, grows a spine and gets enlarged testes.
This is no leader. This is a loser.

So what's the downside? Governor Ronnie Musgrove, Democrat of Mississippi, appoints a Democrat, and we're back to 50-50 and power sharing.

If he is forced out over this I don't blame him a bit. Of course the apology wasn't good enough because to sincerely apologize you have to have done something to apologize for. This has made me more ashamed of the republican party and GW than I have ever been.
To: the_doc
I think I would call his bluff I were the POTUS. So would I.
Show him the personal political black pit that is waiting for him if he undoes all the work Republicans have done to retake the Senate.
To: sinkspur
Just as I thought. Lott is a rat. He would rather drag the entire party down with him than do what is right. Evidently he and Jeffords were closer than I thought.

WE NEED A REAL SENATE LEADER TO RISE UP NOW. You've got one coming, a sleazy little guy from the Dakota country. You might even recognize him, and wonder how you got outsmarted again.

for what it's worth, roger hedgecock, broadcasting from washington d.c. during the impeachment, said that lott was being blackmailed by the democrat party because lott had had a gay affair when he was in college.
lott never asked for a retraction.

Good grief.... Are you serious? Lott is a very poor leader. It's his own fault.
To: Clara Lou
Why am I surprised that Lott would be that much of a chicken dropping? You could make the same observation about many on this forum.
To: okie01
This is no leader. This is a loser. Actually, he's a man with leverage. He'll be leader until somebody can figure out an alternative.

No offense, but, is this substantiated? I'd like to see a documented account of someone that was there - or at least two or three senators stating so.
To: sinkspur
What if he changed his hairdo?
To: esmith
Unfortunaltey we lose either way. However, someone on another thread pulled up Mississippi law and it said something about a new election 90 days after a replacement candidate is picked by the dem gov. Please repost this info for clarification.
To: sinkspur
Yep the LA senate race was a tough loss to have to take....

What have people around this place got to do with Lotts bad deed. He is the one who made the big mistake and now he wants everyone to take the heat for it. I don't want the Republican party to wear the face of Tren Lott.

He would be left with no choice. he would be publicly humiliated.
Those who cannot find it within themselves to come to his defense on this occasion and for this sorry ass attempt at a power grab, should be ashamed.
To: sinkspur
"How would you feel if you were judged too racist to be Majority Leader, but not racist enough to be Senator from Mississippi?" Beg to differ. In my opinion, Lott should not be judged as a racist.
Stupid and feckless? Now that's a whole 'nother issue...

Show him the personal political black pit that is waiting for him if he undoes all the work Republicans have done to retake the Senate. What "black pit"? He's out of politics, and working in Mississippi lobbying, or on the Boards of 5 or 6 Mississippi companies who appreciate what Lott has done for the State.
Hell, he could quintuple his salary if he left.
