WASHINGTON, Dec 14, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A Muslim advocacy group Saturday joined other organizations in urging Senate Republican leader Trent Lott of Mississippi to resign for remarks widely denounced as supporting racial segregation. The American Muslim Council, an umbrella organization with dozens of chapters across the nation, also backed President George W. Bush's criticism of Sen. Lott's controversial remarks about South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond's segregationist presidential bid in 1948. The council said Bush spoke for all freedom loving Americans when he said segregation negates America's founding ideals. The group called for an end to all race, religion and sex-based discriminations. "We join other organizations, groups, and individuals, in asking the senator to step down from his leadership position in the Senate," remarks," said Dr. Nedzib Sacirbey, secretary of the AMC Board. Bush rebuked the comments by Lott, who is set in January to become the Senate majority leader. "Every day our nation was segregated was a day that America was unfaithful to our founding ideals," said Bush. "And the founding ideals of our nation and, in fact, the founding ideals of the political party I represent was, and remains today, the equal dignity and equal rights of every American." Endorsing Bush's remarks, Sacirbey said: "Senator Lott's comments implying his support for segregationist policies of the past, and his nostalgia of a terrible era in the history of our country is immoral and meant to undo our gains we made as nation in the last 50 years." The controversy stems from remarks at a 100th birthday party last week for Sen. Thurmond, at which Sen. Lott said, "We wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years" if the rest of the country had followed Mississippi in backing Thurmond's Dixiecrat campaign. In 1948 Thurmond ran for president on the pro-segregation platform declaring: "All the laws of Washington and all the bayonets of the Army cannot force . . . the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the Negro race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes and into our churches." AMC, a national organization with chapters in major cities, was founded in 1990 to represent Muslim-Americans in the political arena. There are over 7 million American Muslims, according to the council. By ANWAR IQBAL Copyright 2002 by United Press International. |

US Muslims urge Lott to step downIn that case, Senator Lott should definitely stay.
To: mombonn
That was exactly my reaction. They (still) refused to condemn muslim extremist terrorists but the cohesion suddenly appears when it's a republican white southern senator.

To: lainie
Makes me sick. I want Lott gone, but not when the likes of organizations like this and the CBC want him gone.

Is anyone else as tired as I am of hearing from these "advocacy" groups? And particularly from groups who sure did not have the balls to denounce militant Islam, or Democrat bigots.
This whole thing has been stirred up by the media to not only embarrass Republicans but to try and win back the Senate. No one can tell me that Clintonistas weren't just waiting for something to pounce on to try and sabotage Bush's historic gains in Congress.

How about that. Muslims, Democrats, and some Republicans all agree that Lott should step down for his recent offhand comments. Great group.

How about that. Muslims, Democrats, and some Republicans all agree that Lott should step down for his recent offhand comments. Great group. And then there are those Republicans who want him to step down because he is a lousy leader in the U.S. Senate, and who have maintained that position consistently for a long, long time.
Hope you are able to make that distinction.
To: EternalVigilance
Not only can I make the distinction, but I'm part of that group. ...and have been for a couple of years.

Maybe, just maybe, we are seeing the "burn out" of the advocacy group (HOPING, PRAYING).....depending upon what happens here, they may find they just are a bunch of irrelevants.....we're all American's.....or, we're NOT...(i.e. you're with us, or you're with the enemy.)

This whole thing has been stirred up by the media to not only embarrass Republicans but to try and win back the Senate. They can't "win" back the Senate, they can only hope to STEAL it once again.
IF Lottbilly resigns as SML, stays in the Senate, then he shows himself to be above politics.
Otherwise, he's no better than clintbilly.

To: Momaw Nadon
In that case, Senator Lott should definitely stay.Maybe they're using reverse psychology.
More likely, they just want to get into the news, and they're opportunists like Jesse Jackson

How about that. Muslims, Democrats, and some Republicans all agree that Lott should step down for his recent offhand comments. Great group. The canonized conservatives join hands with Muslims and Democrats.
It's the canonized conservatives who have been squealing the loudest, on Free Republic, about the Quran, and how dangerous even moderate Muslims are to the freedom of our nation.
Yet, they'll throw Trent Lott, a man with an ACU rating of 93, overboard, just because he didn't get Clinton during impeachment.
I hope our canonized conservative brethren give a big ole deep, wet, French kiss to those on their right, and their left.

Aren't we talking about the
same Trent Lott who decided to "share power" with the Democrats and who wound up with a big knife sticking out of his back?
I want him gone, but not because of his comments...I wanted him gone long before that.
To: sinkspur
Canonized conservatives would be on Trent Lott's side if he'd only done his job right in the first place.
To: mombonn
You got it wrong too. It's Jesse J&rkoff...

The group called for an end to all race, religion and sex-based discriminations. And this is the group representing a religion which openly calls for discrimination based precisely on religion and sex, even to the point of describing exactly how such Infidels are to be tortured and with what size rod they can beat their wives?
Who are these hypocrites trying to kid?

A cheap associational link trying to garner sympathy for Trent. Frankly, I don't care if the Recovering Homicidal Maniacs call for his ouster. For the good of the party and the conservative cause, he should step down as leader.
To: gabby hayes
For the good of the party and the conservative cause, he should step down as leader. Absolutely Lott is about all chewed up and its time for the next bite at the PC apple.
To: kattracks
There's the best argument I've heard for him to stay!
To: joesnuffy
Maybe he'll finally
grow some balls and dish it back to the Democrats, but good! They've been going a bit too far with this nonsense as it is. Even a mouse backed into a corner will fight.
Time for him to pull that knife out of his back and fight like a man.
To: kattracks
The group called for an end to all race, religion and sex-based discriminations.Uh guys, wrong press statement for the US. You better check with Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Iran, the Sudan, Sierra Leone and Pakistan to find out which copy didn't get where it was supposed to go.

I thought U.S. Islamists didn't know how to put out any statements at all.
No more excuses for them for not vilifying militant Islam.
The truth is Islam itself is militant.
Thanks again, sinkspur, for the steer back to sanity from the mob attack on Senator Lott.
Thankfully your advice has turned many voices on for the cause of not selling out Lott and the Republican Senate.
Some, like me, were totally wrong.
Knee-jerker jerks.
Dangerous time to engage the mouth without the mind in geer.

We have to fight back when someone is vilified for what someone else 'thinks' that the speaker said!
Otherwise, we are allowing the thought police to win!

A good article on the extreme American Muslim Council:
[The AMC] Mainstream Muslims?Far from being "the most mainstream Muslim group in the United States," the AMC is among their most extreme. That explains why George W. Bush in 2000 returned a $1,000 donation from Alamoudi to his campaign.
To: kattracks
I'm in Agreement with the AMC.
Either hell has frozen over, or someone should re-evaluate their position.

Are they afraid to embrace their comrades in arms? Many of them were outraged because Bush was not bigoted enough towards all Muslims but are ready to string Lott up because of what they have decided "he really meant".

I piss on all "muslim advocacy groups". Come get some, POS MAG's.

LOtt's secret to survival and success...
Take the reins from Burton and ride the Saudis......
Become the antiSaudi and all is forgiven, Trent, never mind the similarity of those white robes.....

But everyone knows everyone South of the Mason-Dixon is a closet racist!/sarcasm//
I wonder when I will be restrained by the PC police from saying Merry Christmas, because it might be construed as offensive by someone...oh wait-thats happening now, isn't it?
Torricelli gets verbal censure for criminal activity, Lott gets crucified because the media decides to color his words racist and "supportive of segregation" at a 100 year old colleagues birthday party.Lott stupidly apologises for an offense he did not intend, but bows to the laws of perverted PC and gets eaten alive by those same laws.
The Republican party has gone inexcusably PC.Let the witch hunts begin! I did not leave the party, the party left me.I will not be part of a race baiting organisation.Color me an Independant.
