Sydney council rejects mosque over terror fears

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- A municipal council in Australia's largest city has turned down an application to build a mosque after residents in the area said they feared it could be a hotbed for terrorists.

Members of the Baulkham Hills Shire Council in northwestern Sydney voted 10 to 2 on Tuesday night to reject the application from a local Muslim on the grounds the mosque was not in the community interest.

Hmmmm that surburb does not have much muslim population really it is just the northen west edge of Sydney and there is a lot of housing development.

1% of 19 million I think is wrong. That is 190000? There are at least twice that number muslims here.

Most are in suburbs like Punchbowl, Lakemba, Bankstown and such.

There are number of mosques in those areas.

By the way the excuse of the council is silly. It brings up racisam issues.

The amount of rejecting responses (5000) is good enough.

There are 280,000 or so muslims living in Australia.Makes up 1.5%......190,000 might be the amount who are actually citizens.

Its not a question about racism either,islam isnt a race.Its about opposing cultures,and cultures dont get too much more ideologically opposed than Australian/Islam.

The Supreme Islamic Council of New South Wales state accused the council of racism.

Maybe I'm a little slow, but I always thought Islam was a religion -- not a "race."
