Where can I go to post fictional stories?

Posted on 12/19/2002 8:48:24 AM PST by Sparta

I've thought about writing a novel, but I want to try my hand at writing short stories first. Where can I go online to post my short stories?

Have you considered starting a small web site? tripod.com and geocities.com offer free space. An alternative would be usenet news groups - find one that fits your preferred genre, and post away!

Might I ask what sort of stories you plan to publish?

I've written a few things and been fortunate enough to find a market for some of them.
If you want to write-- then do so! It ain't like going swimming, where you can dip your toe in to see if the water is to your liking. Believe me, the water is cold and deep and dark. You'll flounder around for awhile, collecting rejection slips by the dozens. Eventually though, if you're good-- and if you're lucky, you'll sell something. That will be a day to remember.
Good luck, and don't give up your day job just yet.

A little self-promotion here, but what the hey...

I'm going to have short story published at mytholog.com in a few weeks. It's an on-line magazine, just starting out. The story has to be up to the editors' standards to be accepted, but someplace like that is a good place to start, IMO.

The 'zine describes itself as "interstitial," i.e., stories that fall between the cracks of genre. Considering my story is a fairy tale about a WW2 vet and his son, in a made-up European city, circa 1965, I guess my story fits in quite well.

Whenever you post your work, be sure to check out this site in advance.

It lets you add various degrees of licensing protection to your work, governing how others may legally reproduce it (if at all). And it's free!

Perhaps you'd be so kind as to FReepmail me when you publish one of your stories?
