Israeli troops kill eleven-year-old girl

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli army gunfire has killed an 11-year-old Palestinian girl in the Gaza Strip as she opened a window in her house in an area where soldiers and gunmen do battle daily, her relatives say.

Nada Madi, 11, was shot in southern Gaza's Rafah refugee camp on Thursday. Her family said the gunfire came from an Israeli army outpost on the Egyptian border about a kilometre away and that the shooting was unprovoked.

Israeli military sources had no information about a girl being shot but said an army patrol had exchanged fire with Palestinian gunmen in the area.

The new violence came as the United States counts down to possible military action to disarm Iraq, and seeks to secure Arab support by keeping Middle East tensions contained.

In the West Bank, Israeli security forces removed an outpost that Jewish settlers had erected without Israeli government consent in the divided city of Hebron.

Three Israeli protesters were arrested at the site, which settlers established after Palestinian gunmen killed 12 Israeli soldiers and security men on November 16 in an ambush nearby.

Israeli forces also went into action in the West Bank city of Tulkarm, demolishing the family home of Sirhan Sirhan, wanted on suspicion of carrying out a shooting attack that killed five people at an Israeli kibbutz last month.

Palestinian witnesses said Sirhan's father was arrested. It was not immediately clear if he was among five wanted men whom the Israeli army said were detained in the operation. Another 19 were taken into custody elsewhere in West Bank, it said.

GIRL SHOT AFTER RETURNING FROM SCHOOL

Speaking by telephone from Rafah refugee camp, Nada Madi's aunt said death came through the window of her niece's room.

"The girl just returned from school, went to her room on the third floor and opened the window. She was hit with a bullet to her chest," Ghalia Madi said.

Israeli soldiers in the Termit garrison regularly battle militants who tunnel under the Egyptian border and smuggle arms to fuel a more than two-year-old Palestinian uprising for independence.

At least 1,728 Palestinians and 670 Israelis have died in the revolt, which erupted in September 2000 after peace talks stalled.

A "Quartet" of Middle East mediators was due to meet on Friday to discuss a three-stage plan for rapprochement guaranteeing statehood for Palestinians and security for Israel.

But the so-called peace "road map" looked likely to languish longer after the United States proposed to its Quartet partners -- the United Nations, European Union and Russia -- that it be put on hold pending January 28 general elections in Israel.

"COMMEMORATIVE" HEBRON OUTPOST DISMANTLED

Under lancing rain in Hebron, soldiers and police dragged young settlers out of caravans set up along a route Israel calls "Worshippers' Way" that connects the city and its Tomb of the Patriarch shrine with the adjacent settlement of Kiryat Arba.

A Defence Ministry statement said the caravans constituted "an illegal outpost on private Palestinian land".

After last month's ambush, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon pledged to set up "security corridors" connecting tiny heavily-guarded enclaves in Hebron where some 450 settlers live among some 120,000 Palestinians.

But settlers demanded they be allowed to build a contiguous strip of homes between Kiryat Arba and Jewish holy sites.

Some 200,000 settlers live on land Israel occupied in the 1967 Middle East war and on which Palestinians want to establish a state.

The international community regards the settlements as illegal. Israel disputes this, but does restrict settlement expansion that has not been authorised by its government.

Thats about three thousand feet away. This in an area where gunfire 'erupts' frequently, her relatives were sure those Jews 3,000 feet down the road did it. Hey Reuters, do you just reprint what the Palis give you or can you still do any independent reporting?

Knowing the value (or lack thereof) islamics give to their females, it is sadly plausible to assume some raghead did this soley to try to blame the Israelis.

Stay vigilent, stay armed, and NEVER trust a muslim!

Can't help but notice that Reuters reports only Arab children killed, not Jewish children. More than a coincidence...?

When you think of how heartbroken her parents must be, you wonder how they could let her stick her head out a window while there's shooting outside.

In my neighborhood here in suburban Dallas, we don't blow up innocent people or make bombs, or practice any terrorism that I am aware of. That's probably why we don't have 11 yr olds getting killed by Army troops who are fighting "gunmen". It also keeps the property values up. Just an observation.

News Flash!

I always thought the Palis had been doing this for much longer than two years. Of course, it does say MORE THAN TWO-YEAR-OLD...

No one, not even Israel's worst enemies the PLO, would suggest that Israel INTENDED to kill this girl. Once a war is going on, the innocent will be hit at times.

How many young Israelis, even Babies, have the Pallies INTENTIONALLY targetted?

*yawn* Remember the Mohammed boy that made so many headlines? Palestenians refused an independent autopsy to see who killed him.

No he is a decendant. They were so proud of the first Sirhan Sirhan they named this one after his uncle. He followed in his uncles footsteps and murdered some people too.

How thoughtful of Reuters to print this highly questionable story. As the Dialup Llama points out, a kilometer is a very long distance.

There is no way she could have been deliberately shot at such a distance unless she was deliberately targeted by an Israeli sniper, and even then, it would have been a difficult shot. While this is possible, the claims of the family, who could not possibly have identified the source of a shot made from such a distance (it's hard enough to do this from a few hundred feet away), can't possibly be based on actual observation.

Thus, Reuters is spreading rumors, but without a disclaimer. Even Matt Drudge is more professional than that.

Move over, Weekly World News, Reuters is moving into your space!

They trot out this tired old statistic which assumes some sort of equivalence between the dead on both sides. Most killed Israelis are civilians and the vast majority of killed Palestinians were not.

Palestinian uprising for independence

They could have had independence two years ago, when Barak offered them 95% of everything they asked for. But because their greedy, shriveled little hearts crave the DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL and GENOCIDE OF ALL THE JEW this "uprising" has continued.

Exactly right! They don't or they bury it by obliterating the fact that 1-yearold jewish babies are killed by referring to them only as jewish persons; but let a pali 17-yearold instigator die and it's a poor little innocent child, boo-hoo.

No you stunned Palestinian...death came through the loudspeaker at your mosque.
besides...what do you care...you said you needed skulls to build a bridge to heaven...whats a few Arab skulls matter in the bigger picture.
