PBA Ban -- Bank on It, Lott Says

By Fred Jackson and Bill Fancher
November 6, 2002

(AgapePress) - Tuesday's stunning victories for Republicans in the House and Senate are good news for pro-family issues.

The new Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott of Mississippi, says with Republicans now in control of the White House and both houses of Congress, the logjam of bills is going to be broken. Lott says not only will important legislation dealing with homeland security and the economy be moved along quickly, but also a key issue of importance to Christians: a ban on partial-birth abortion.

"We will move the partial-birth abortion bill through [the Senate]," Lott says. "The House did it this year -- [but] once again, [outgoing Majority Leader] Tom Daschle would not call it up [in the Senate].

"I will call it up, we will pass it, and the president will sign it. I'm making that commitment -- you can write it down."

Lott made his comment Wednesday morning in an interview with American Family Radio.

Gary Bauer
Pro-Family Vote
As the political smoke clears from the election, pro-family advocate Gary Bauer says the GOP's series of victories could have been more decisive. Bauer notes that pro-family voters were key in several Republican victories, including the Saxby Chambliss win in the Georgia Senate race. But he says he is not sure the Bush Administration did enough to reach out to that segment of the voting public.

"I do sense a little bit of burnout around the country and some frustration on some of the issues that haven't been dealt with," Bauer says. "And I think that the [Republican] Party could still have a problem on these very important issues."

Bauer does think more can be done in the future to solidify the pro-family demographic. "I think that the GOP must stop taking that vote for granted, and work hard to get it out -- just the way the Democratic Party does for some of the key constituencies that are part of their coalition," he says.

Tuesday's results indicate what the pro-family vote can do when it is mobilized.

First voted to deny pro-lifers the normal protections of the bankruptcy laws.

anyone who votes to punish any kind of pro-life activism, to deter it, to make it more costly, etc., is pro-abortion.
