Roberts wrongly casts this as a free speech issue. No one disputed Lott's right to say what he said.

If liberal activists had tried to shout him down, prevent him from speaking, or if someone, knowing what he intended to say, sought a court order barring him from giving the speech, I would have supported to the hilt efforts to ensure his right to speak.

However, others have their rights of free speech too. And if people (rightly, in my view) criticized Lott's comments as either racist or at the least, extremely ill-considered, it was their right to say so.

Free speech doesn't mean that there are no consequences for one's speech, only that the government cannot,except in very limited circumstances, limit what you say.

I am a Conservative American. Not a republican. I will not vote for Bush in 04. Perhaps I am only one but there are many , many, other conservatives that feel likewise. If Bush loses in 04, we will be blamed. If he wins, we will be kicked aside again, the day after the election. I love the people here that refuse to consider that Bush has done huge harm to the party. Its not my party its theirs. Must be they love being the minority party.

For whatever reason, you left out the "Barf Alert" I am just so sick of alternative celebrations and others deny ours. Maybe we need to say Christmas is a "First Fruits" celebration as well. After all, Jesus was God and Mary's first fruit.

I am serious, maybe then we could take away their argument of religion. Think about it.

I prefer not to post to you on the site, but I want you to know I have felt the same as you on this Trent Lott issue. I am fairly new to politics even tho I am old.LOL. I am very mad at President Bush for not supporting Senator Lott in public. This is something the liberals dreamed up and anyone who has half a brain should realize that. Lotts fate is another illustration of the power of the media. Starting in about 1960 the media created Kennedy and various 'civil rights' creatures. It defeated Goldwater. The media unmade Nixon. It kept Clinton from conviction. Lott was easy. He was a simple reminder to all of us to the effect that certain thoughts are no no's.
