Sen. Fritz Hollings: SC Democrat led fight against 1960's lunch counter integration
various newspaper archives | 12/23/02 | myself

Posted on 12/23/2002 3:07:30 PM PST by GOPcapitalist

With recent controversy surrounding Trent Lott, the leftist media has been woefully negligent when it comes to Democrat senators who have committed far worse offenses. In part, conservatives have responded by pointing out the bigotted past of former Ku Klux Klansman Robert Byrd (D-WV), who recently used a racial slur on television. There's another Democrat senator out there with a similarly embarassing past, but also one who has recieved much less attention, even among conservatives: Sen. Ernest Hollings (D-SC). Like Byrd, Hollings has a recent history of racial slurs. Less known is his history as governor of South Carolina in the early 1960's, when he was a leading segregationist. To fill this gap here's a glimpse of Senator Hollings' segregationist past and history of racial slurs:

SEGREGATIONIST GOVERNOR: As Governor of South Carolina, Ernest F. Hollings personally led the fight against lunch counter integration in his state. The New York Times reported that Hollings "warned today that South Carolina would not permit 'explosive' manifestations in connection with Negro demands for lunch-counter services." The Times reported that Hollings called a news conference on the subject where he "challenged President Eisenhower's contention that minorities had the right to engage in certain types of demonstrations" against segregation. Hollings told reporters at the press conference that Eisenhower was "confused" and had done "great damage to peace and good order" by supporting the rights of minorities to protest segregation at the lunch counters. (SOURCE: "Warning by Hollings." New York Times, March 17, 1960.)

ANTI-INTIGRATION ORGANIZER: Governor Ernest F. Hollings of South Carolina is listed as a leading participant at a July 23, 1961 conference of "leading segregationists" in Atlanta to organize a "segregationist bloc" voting lobby to resist pressures for integration. Hollings was one of four governors who attended, with seven more having been invited. The others were Orval Faubus of Arkansas, Ross Barnett of Mississippi, and John Patterson of Alabama. The strategies discussed at the meeting heavily involved using the White Citizens Council, a segregationist organization. (SOURCE: Sitton, Claude. "Segregation Bloc Seeks Vote Lobby." New York Times, Jul 24, 1961.)

RACIAL SLURS: Senator Ernest Hollings has a long history of using racial slurs. Following a poor showing in the 1983 Iowa Straw Poll, Hollings remarked "You had wetbacks from California that came in here for Cranston," a reference to Alan Cranston who finished second. Hollings also made derogatory references to an African delegation at a 1993 international conference, suggesting they were cannibals. He stated "Everybody likes to go to Geneva. I used to do it for the Law of the Sea conferences and you'd find these potentates from down in Africa, you know, rather than eating each other, they'd just come up and get a good square meal in Geneva." He once referred to Sen. Howard Metzenbaum of Ohio, who was Jewish, as "the senator from B'nai B'rith." The South Carolina Democrat also allegedly referred to blacks with the slur "darkies" in a 1986 interview and once called the Rainbow PUSH coalition the "blackbo coalition."

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

Maybe we should all contribute to buying an ad, a la Sean Penn, detailing the information to the public. And, I mean in the major media papers.

Probably about the same time they stop beating up on Lott over the Thurmond speech and start reporting Robert Byrd's Klan membership and Jesse Jackson's "hymietown" comment. Or in other words, never.

This really wouldn't be a bad idea. We could run successive full page ads in a major paper detailing a specific Democrat racist every week with all their quotes etc.

Racist Democrats to be featured could include Hollings, Robert Byrd for his KKK membership, and Dick Gephardt for his White Citizens Council connections. Maybe later we could take on some of the historical figures like FDR, who ordered Japanese Internment and appointed a notorious Klan leader (Hugo Black) to the supreme court.

If I read correctly, the most recent incident was in 1983. That's 20 years ago. That's 20 years ago.

The "darkies" comment was in '86, and the cannibals thing was in '93 or '94.

Good point about the sainted FDR. He is quoted in Fleming's New Dealers' War, and corroborated by Paul Beschloss in the Conquerors as telling two aids, one Catholic and the other a Jew, Henry Morgenthau his Sec of Treasury, that "You must understand America is a Protestant nation and you Catholics and Jews are only here by sufferance."

As this was said in response to Morgenthau's effort to get FDR to deal with the Holocaust it seems to be in the nature of a threat to let sleeping dogs lie or else...

Not a quote to be found at the FDR Memorial in D.C., his home in Hyde Park, or mentioned at DNC functions. Wonder why?

Thanks for the post. Lemme pile on the 'RATS with this on hillary's hypocrisy.....

Hillary's own racial/ethnic slur !.....

BOOK CHARGES: HILLARY CALLED AIDE JEW BA**ARD
DRUDGE REPORT
FRIDAY JULY 14, 2000 12:00:00 ET

**World Exclusive**
**Contains Graphic Description**

Hillary Clinton has angered Jewish voters in New York and nationally with her controversial support of a Palestinian State, and her startling embrace of Yasser Arafat s wife.

Questions remain, and the debate intensifies, as to whether she can win the crucial Jewish vote in New York as she wages a neck-and-neck battle with Congressman Rick Lazio, who has made the Jewish question a campaign issue.

Now, as the race comes down to the wire, a new book is set to explore the first lady s feelings about Jews and anti-Semitic sentiments held by certain Rodham family members.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060193921/drudgereport>Biographer Jerry Oppenheimer s new book STATE OF A UNION: INSIDE THE COMPLEX MARRIAGE OF BILL AND HILLARY CLINTON will not be released by HARPERCOLLINS until Tuesday, but the DRUDGE REPORT can reveal:

In one particularly shocking passage in the book, Oppenheimer quotes a campaign official who describes an angry attack by Hillary in which she screams at him, "You fu**ing Jew ba**ard!"

My apologies for the language, even though I did ** it out. I had to show the blatant hypocrisy, in light of the recent Trent Lott debacle.

Thanks this is a keeper and has been bookmarked.

Hollings and Byrd are the living Racists of yesteryear and today in the Rat Party still in power as Senators.

They with the Senior Gore, Fullbright and other white racists were DemonicRats who wore designer suits and practiced full blown racism as senators.

When President Eisenhower a republican tried to tear down the decades of demonicRat racism since the civil war, these racist Rats fought him on every level 24/7!

This has been ignored by the NY Slimes, Slime and Newsweak and of course the DC Compost as well as ABCNNBCBS.

It is past time to drag the living Rat racists and their dead racist buddies out into the light of reality. Fullbright the racist mentor of the Clintoon and the Senior Gore were evil and vile racists.

Today's WSJ has a great editiorial concerning Robert "White Ni@@er" Bryd's history as a Klan Kleagle. They quote him as recommending in 1997 that young people don't join the Klan because it will be an "albatross." The guy really has a way of expressing remorse.

Bryd is the only senator to have voted against Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas as SC justices. Wonder what those two had in common?

And always, always note that Bryd was not just a Klan Kleage; not just a Dem pol from some podunk town; but the man elected by his fellow Dem senators to lead them in the Senate through the 1980s.

Christine S. McCreary
Preface
by Donald A. Ritchie
In her 45 years of service on Capitol Hill, Christine S. McCreary saw great
changes in both the Senate and in Washington, D.C. Born in New York City in
1926, Christine Stewart was a student at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona
Beach, Florida, when the United States entered World War II and the federal
government put out a call for civilian employees to staff the many new wartime
agencies. She passed the typing test and immediately left for Washington.
Although still a segregated city, the capital offered exciting challenges and
opportunities for a young African American woman.
Beginning at the Office of Price Administration, she moved to the Federal
Security Administration. One day while working in the FSA typing pool, Stewart
was called to take dictation for an official whose secretary was out sick. The
official, Stuart Symington, was so impressed with her work that took her along
when he became chairman of the National Security Board and director of the
Reconstruction Finance Corporation. She served as administrative assistant to
Symington's assistant, George L. P. Weaver. In 1952 Symington won election to
the United States Senate from Missouri as a Democrat, and offered her a position
on his Senate staff. She accepted, but waited until after the birth of her son. She
had married Rivers D. McCreary, then a railroad postal clerk in Washington and
a musician. They had two sons, Rivers and James.
Very few African Americans held professional positions in the Senate in 1953.
Jesse Nichols had become the government documents librarian for the Senate
Finance Committee in 1937, and Marguerite Ingram became the first black
secretary when she joined the staff of Senator Paul Douglas, an Illinois Democrat,
in 1949. By 1953 the Senate restaurant in the Capitol and the staff cafeteria in the
Senate Office Building remained unofficially segregated. Although most of the
kitchen staff, waiters and cafeteria workers were black, the patrons were
exclusively white. Christine McCreary was among the first to challenge this de
facto segregation by dining regularly in the staff cafeteria.
McCreary remained on Senator Symington's staff until his retirement in 1977.
She then joined the office of Senator John Glenn, Democrat of Ohio, who was
serving in his first term. McCreary retired from the Senate in 1998 at the end of
Senator Glenn's fourth term, when he chose not to run for reelection. During her
nearly half century on Capitol Hill she saw size of each senator's personal staff
multiply. When she began the entire Senate staff worked out of one Senate Office
Building. By the time she retired, three office buildings accommodating a staff
that had increased seven fold. During those years she moved from the Old Senate
Office Building (later named the Richard Russell Building) with its mahogany

doors, crystal chandeliers, and marble fire places, to the newest building (named
for Senator Philip A. Hart), with its duplex office suites, computer terminals, and
satellite dishes for instant communications. The staff of the Senate also became
more racially integrated, as did the Senate floor with the elections of Senator
Edward W. Brooke, a Republican of Massachusetts, and Carol Moseley-Braun, a
Democrat of Illinois.

Hollings is the guy who put the confederate flag on teh South Carolina Statehouse.

At least the segregationists were open and above board about their desire to keep blacks down. Liberals aren't. Yet they continue to fight for policies that do nothing but keep minorities down and dependent and they fight tooth and nail to maintain that intolerable, racist situation.

Exactly!

Their ideologies are 180 degrees apart. Marshall was an ultra-liberal activist. Thomas is a , legislation-respecting constitutionalist.

Byrd -- who has led the Klan and the Demoractic senate -- wasn't basing his votes on political viewpoints.

Byrd is a racist and the Democratic Party is a racist institution for making him their leader.

Clintons flew the Arkansas State Flag with the star of the Confederacy on it as well as all state documents and emblems.

It was done to intimidate blacks from voting.

Bill and Hillary were five time governors of Arkansas and never once made any attempt to remove the star of the confederacy from the State flag and documents.

Clintons fought the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the NAACP had to sue the Bill Clinton for enforcement.

Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton are segregationist and racist in word and action.

As this thread once again proves, most of the old school southern Democrats are far more "racist" than the current southern Republican leadership. The FDR 'RATs ran a completely segregated south when they were in power, today's heavily Republican south in intergrated.

This would be great ammo to use against the 'RATs, but we are never able to because a few of your "consevative" Dixiecrat buddies will no doubt be drawn to Hollings' segregationist record and defend him and the rest of the old sleazebag segregationist 'RATs as "true conservatives". (Anyone who disagrees with them about racist Democrats will no doubt be labeled a "southern hater" or something like that).

Most of these so-called "conservatives" are actually quasi-liberatarians who have ALWAYS despised the Republican Party, which only further enforces my point.

Post #34 also further illistrates my point about Clinton/Gore's rise to power and contradicts your theory that the only people who voted for them in the south were blacks and "yankee" transplants. Certainly, Clinton could not have won 70+% of the vote in Arkansas without winning over so-called "consevative" (in name only) white Dixiecrats. Ditto with Carter, Wilson, and so forth.

They despise Clinton NOW, but that's because the modern Clinton is known for being President of the United States, a federal office. Clinton and Gore ran on quite a different tone ("I'm pro-life! Really!") when they were seeking statewide office, and had the racist Dixiecrats eating out of their hands.

Southern Republicans, on the other hand, hated Slick Willie during the ol' days, but unfortunately had no statewide power back in the 70s when they had a chance to stop him. I'm not a big fan of Bill Frist, but I am fortuante that his state was at least smart enough to jump off the Dixiecrat platation decades before the "more conservative" deep south. In the 1920s, Tennessee was leaning conservative Republican turf. Probably explains why Clinton and Carter easily won their "conservative" home states but TN threw out but Al Bore Sr. and Jr. after seeing their "leadership" in action.

You are correct, and that is also true for parts of the Kentucky mountains, as well as some counties in NC. Ditto the Ozarks. Indeed, the poorest county in the nation in 1960, also had the highest percentage vote for Nixon, something like 93%. That was Jackson County, Kentucky.

They keep the NY Times on record or microfiche, or if not, they probably subscribe to the electronic database that has the same.
