Mayor Daley and his wife have been taken to Northwestern Hospital. Not clear on reason. Is said that Mayor is suffering chest pains but the original call to 911 was to get help for Maggie Daley who might have food poisoning. Authorities are not sure if both are suffering from the same ailment.

Mayor And Wife Both Admitted To ER With Stomach Flu

Hospital Spokesperson Declines To Give Reason For Visit

POSTED: 10:25 a.m. CST December 27, 2002
UPDATED: 11:09 a.m. CST December 27, 2002

CHICAGO -- Shortly after 10 a.m. Friday, Mayor Richard M. Daley and his wife Maggie were both admitted to the emergency room of Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed that both the mayor and his wife were being "checked out" in the emergency room. A source told NBC5 that the two were taken to the hospital in separate vehicles.

At a news conference outside the hospital around 11 a.m., a doctor said the mayor and his wife were both suffering from the stomach flu, with violent vomiting, diarrhea and fainting episodes.

The doctor said Maggie Daley may have broken a rib during a fainting episode, when she fell onto a carpeted floor, on her right side. The doctor said he expected an x-ray to confirm that diagnosis.

The doctor said both Daleys first got sick last night.

Deja vu. I remember when the real Mayor Daley (Hizzoner da Mare, Richard J. Daley, not his kid, "little Richie") died of a heart attack. That was about 25 years ago.

I must pop on over to DU to see if they are blaming this on their mysterious "Paul Wellstone assassin" from the VWRC.

...stomach flu...

I don't think therre is any such thing. Many years ago the State Board of Health of California analyzed several hundred cases of stomach flu. They found the influenza virus not at all. They did find about 92% of the patients had bacillary dysentery...an entirely different breed of cat.

[Influenza is a virus spread by inhalation. Bacillary dysentery is caused by a bacterium, usually a species of Shigella, and is spread by fecal contamination {i.e., poop}.]

If I remember correctly, the elder Hizzoner was visiting his physician on North Michigan Ave (I believe that's where he was). Apparently he was visiting the doc and he dropped right there in the office. Again, memory could be failing me, but I believe those were the circumstances.

I had this recently. I had only fainted once in the previous 50+ years, but in one horrible night, I fainted twice. I still have the bruises.

A couple of special therapy treatments from my D. O., and I was fine within 12 hours.

Yes, that is exactly what happened. I remember it vividly. Mayor Daley had been the dominant figure in Chicago for my whole life up to that point (about 1977).

Born in the city of Chicago in 1953 and lived there through 1984

daleys in hospital with ‘violent’ flu - December 27, 2002

Mayor Daley joked about missing his appointments today after he and his wife were hospitalized with symptoms of stomach flu—the mayor’s third hospitalization in less than three years.

The mayor’s wife cracked a rib when she fainted and fell about 9 a.m. in their Prairie Avenue home on the Near South Side after the couple suffered bouts of ‘‘fairly violent’’ vomiting and diarrhea overnight, said Dr. David Zull, a Northwestern Memorial Hospital emergency room physician.

The Daleys were taken by ambulance to the hospital, where they were staying in separate rooms and were being treated for dehydration with intravenous fluids, Zull said. Maggie Daley was taking pain medication for her rib.

The illness hit the mayor and his wife about 2 a.m., Zull said, and both had fainting spells. Their son Patrick Daley experienced similar symptoms on Christmas Eve, officials said.

Maggie Daley briefly lost consciousness and fell onto her right side on a carpeted area of their home, officials said. The mayor suffered chest pains that Zull attributed to his vomiting, not to his hypertension. And Maggie Daley’s symptoms were unrelated to her breast cancer or medication she is taking to combat the cancer, he added.

The Daleys’ three children—Patrick, Nora and Elizabeth—and members of their extended family were at the hospital with Chicago’s first couple.

“The mayor is a trouper, as you all know,” said said mayoral spokeswoman Jacquelyn Heard.

She added that Daley asked where his Christmas presents were and joked if he was missing any meetings at City Hall and was told no.

Symptoms of stomach flu—a common name for a viral gastroenteritis unrelated to influenza—last about 12 hours. Maggie Daley is expected to stay overnight in the hospital, but doctors said the mayor might leave later today. He canceled a Saturday morning appearance at his third annual Holiday Sports Festival at McCormick Place.

Daley spent more than a week at Northwestern in April 2000 because of hypertension-related problems. He also stayed overnight at the hospital in February after nearly fainting at a restaurant.

I like Mayor Daley, I don't agree with him most of the time but he has done a lot for the city (causing the crime rate to drop big). Hope him and his wife get well soon.
