Lott's comments were in my paper several times about my Senator not opposing him in 1998 with the agreement that he would step down in 2000!
Not to mention I also received that same information from well placed sources.
It was common knowledge out here in Oklahoma that Lott reneged on his promise to step aside knowing full well that Sen Nickles could not continue to serve as the #2 man after the 2002 elections.
How about Lott not taking Senator Nickles with him to the WH during the last budget negotiation with the clinton Administration where he gave up the farm?

I am a conservative Bush Republican and I was not happy with the Education bill as it was written. Still not BTW!
To: PhiKapMom
Hi PKM,
As you now know, it got pretty lively here at FR while you were gone.
I couldn't believe, myself, the intellectual contortions that were done to defend the indefensible.
Kinda reminded me of the old Clintonista days, only it was Republicans this time around.

Politics smells sometimes. I held my nose, too, but look at what it got us. Control of 2 houses of Congress, and 3 branches of govt.!
That was the plan, and it worked; Give enough to take the issue away from them, then take their Senate in exchange.

...but any talk of his not being an honorable man is absolutely dead wrong Was going on BET and groveling before the race hustlers the act of an honorable man? Was casting away the core conservative principles of equality and color blindness honorable?
Many of us have disbelieved in Lott's 'honor' for a long time, and consider his performance on BET to be the final proof of the correctness of our view of him as a backslapping, disingenuous, self-serving pol.
What did you do for the man, if I may ask?

ahhhh, a Nickles person
well, I didn't read those comments from your paper, so I find it difficult to answer your comments on something I didn't see
I would argue that my sources about whether Lott stated he would step down are at least as good as yours, and no such statements were made by Lott - in point of fact, I am MONUMENTALLY skeptical that he ever made such a promise - however, if you can find such a statement, I am willing to check it out
I would add that it is common knowleadge that Nickles and his staff have had the knife out for Lott for years, certainly while I was in DC and I would guess that it continued after I left
as for Sen Nickles not going to the WH for a round of budget negotiations, I am reminded of former Speaker Gingrich's snit

I would add that it is common knowleadge that Nickles and his staff have had the knife out for Lott for years... Prescient, ain't he... ;-)
To: BeachPaladin
while I personally know he is no racist I must agree that his statement may have given some that impression - he has always spoken extemporaniously (sp?) and has occasionally made some serious gaffes - but any talk of his not being an honorable man is absolutely dead wrong
FYI - I have lurked on FR for years - going back to before the impeachment trials and remember well the long time accusations and statements about my former boss - it's really a shame that some of what was stated here on FR had little or no basis in fact - but that of course is one of the drawbacks of the net

when fighting for your political life, sometimes you grasp at straws
I agree that his interview on BET was a mistake - if he needed a forum there were others available - his "apology tour" was embarressing even for many of his supporters
I worked projects for him...

Thanks for the comments. I could not believe what I was reading as I was going through the comments I had been bumped to while I was gone.
Looks like I missed a total flame war on here.
Still hard to believe how the comments could be defended!

Lott did himself in with his silly BET interview and deserved to be cut loose after that. If I recall correctly you were out there on the Trent Lott bandwagon even after the BET interview. When did you reach this epiphany. Obviously it was only after Lott decided to resign.
To: chiller
And then you go back and do some revising a little at a time, ususally with riders in the appropriations bills. There's always more than one way to skin a cat. You do not always have to go in somebody's face to get things done.

Nice post...I find myself in agreement with you about Lott, but not nearly as much so about Frist.
I suppose alot of our disagreement about the new majority leader stems from the personal experiences this year of each of us. The Senatorial Committee was helpful to you in your efforts, and signally unhelpful to mine...even though they were more than happy to use the assets I brought to their table.
Happy holidays!

Welcome to weirdo-ville. Now you've done it.
LOL
You've thrown red-meat to the die-hard Lott defenders, and now you have to deal with them after the rest of us have gone away gloating in our victory.
You're now in the equivalent of the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where they go into the tomb and all the mummies fall all over them.
(By the way, you are 100% right, and you know it.)

Looks like I missed a total flame war on here. LOL...you might say that, yeah...

I am certainly proud to be called a Nickles person along with Inhofe. Might want to ask why you think why they were after Lott? Senator Nickles and his staff are some of the finest people I have met and as loyal to the Republican caucus as they come.
Kind of a diverse bunch going after Lott don't you think? Let's see -- Warner is not exactly a huge conservative, then you have Allen and Santorum also on board not to mention Kyl and Frist. Makes me think that there is more to what I have heard about Lott then you want us to believe.
To: EternalVigilance
How you doing?
It was great after the last election to take the time off from even being on a computer!
To: hchutch
Thanks for the assist. Correct. Looking for many many changes to come, now that they can FINALLY be achieved.
Even with 60 votes need in the Senate to force votes, committee chairs are huge ie; judicial.
In the greater scheme of things, nothing bigger than this one, alone.
