Dunn: Murray's comments on bin Laden 'stupid'
The News Tribune - Tacoma, WA ^ | 1-4-03

Potential Senate rival Jennifer Dunn says Sen. Patty Murray's comments about Osama bin Laden's benevolence were "stupid" and ill-considered, but not a career-ending gaffe.

Dunn, a Bellevue Republican elected to Congress in 1992, the same year Murray went to the Senate, confirmed in an interview Friday that she's under heavy pressure from her party to run against Murray next year, but has made no decisions.

Even President Bush has given a nudge, she said.

She told The Associated Press that if she does run, she hasn't decided how to deal with Murray's comments about bin Laden.

"She said a stupid thing," Dunn said. "She said it without thinking."

A Murray spokesman countered that some Republicans were engaging "in silly, partisan games."

Last month, addressing a high school class in Vancouver, Wash., Murray asked students to consider why bin Laden is so popular in some parts of the world.

The answers may be uncomfortable, Murray said, but are important for Americans to ponder.

"He's been out in these countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day-care facilities, building health-care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. We haven't done that," Murray said.

"How would they look at us today if we had been there helping them with some of that rather than just being the people who are going to bomb in Iraq and go to Afghanistan?"

The remarks made headlines and heated up talk shows. GOP state Chairman Chris Vance called the comments "outrageous and despicable." He and potential Murray rival Rep. George Nethercutt (R-Spokane) challenged her to debate her views.

Murray hasn't given interviews on her Osama comments. However, in a prepared statement Dec. 20, Murray made it clear she considers Osama bin Laden "an evil terrorist who is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans."

RETIRE PATTY!

Speaking of our senior senator, the WSRP has just started a web site devoted to unseating Patty Murray when she’s up for re-election in 2004. It’s called www.retirepatty.com. Be sure to check it out! We’ll be updating it regularly with new information.

"THIS JUST IN!! A panel of scientists has determined why
Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) encourages al Qaeda type terrorists
claiming they build "schools,... roads, ... infrastructure, ... day-care facilities, .. health-care facilities".

Why the treason? How could Murray and the Democrats betray the murdered Americans?

The reason is because the Democrats have realized that
the families and friends of the murdered would never vote Democratic again after their loved ones were attacked and killed
by the very same terrorists and murderers of Americans that Murray-Democrats love.

Click here for another FR thread on Murray. I'd say the author of this letter to the editor would agree.

"She said a stupid thing," Dunn said. "She said it without thinking."

If Senator Murray says things, without thinking, that are stupid, she does not belong in the US Senate........

Focus on the little child who is being held outside of the window of the burning WTC when you try to analyze Murray's comments.......

Liberals don't think — they "feel" and that is why most of what they say is stupid. Lott, on the other hand is capable of thinking and he thought something stupid and spoke it. You can't really compare Republicans and Democrats.

Patty Murray represents her core constituents of Seattle liberals. That is her job. The problem is not with Murray it is with the people who elected her. This is the same group that returned Baghdad Jim McDermott to congress with over 70% of the vote.

We live in a country divided into two groups... Americans and liberals.
